Birthday Cake With Chocolate Curls

I made this cake for my nephew's second birthday. For the chocolate shavings, I used chocolate at room temperature and a vegetable peeler.

Lilli (Golden Retriever)

Lilli is an 18 month old Purebred Golden Retriever. I looked in paper and purchased her in 2006. Lilli loves to play ball and loves to chew on bones.

Lilli is learning how to get 2 tennis balls into her mouth. She is loving and affectionate, and follows me everywhere. She shares my pillow at night!

Today's Tips:

Egg Breakfast Sandwich

Cut both ends out of an empty, clean tuna can. Spray with cooking spray, place on a skillet, hold down and fill with a beaten egg. You can add diced ham, cheese, vegetables, etc. Cook on low-med heat until firm. Run a knife around inside edges of can to loosen the egg, and remove can. Flip egg over to cook other side. Serve as a sandwich ("Egg McMuffin") using toast, English muffin, or homemade biscuit.

Aspirin For Infections

I work many hours in a nursing home, and consequently developed a bad infection from a blister. Triple antibiotic cream did nothing to it by itself. I had the idea that, if aspirin was an astringent, perhaps it would reduce the infection if placed on the site. I made a paste and put it on the spot, and also some of the triple antibiotic cream. The next morning all infection was gone!

Look For Free Legal Services In Your Area

Don't stay in an unhappy marriage because you can't afford a lawyer! Look in the phone book, call your local court house, or look on the internet (yellowpages.com is a good site) I found out through a friend that there is a free Legal Service in the county where I live. You do have to qualify financially, and there is A LOT or paperwork involved. For example, if you are a separated stay at home mom, they only count the income you use to support your household. If I had known this sooner, my life would have been very different.

Protect Your Garden Produce With Pantyhose

To protect your garden produce from insects or animals that love to sample, cover each (squash, lets say) with a length of panty hose. Close the top and bottom of the hose by knotting or tying with string so there are no openings for critters. The hose won't hold in the heat and will dry quickly after a rain.

Place Line Dried Clothes In The Dryer To Soften Up

Hanging your wash outside saves big bucks, but can also leave your clothes stiff. I started putting my clothes in the dryer for about 5 minutes to let them soften up. A couple of times, I've forgotten and left it in there the entire cycle. This defeats the whole purpose of hanging the clothes out to begin with. I started leaving a timer next to the dryer and setting it for 5 minutes. The sound of the timer reminds me about the clothes. (The dial on my dryer won't set for such a short amount of time)

Uses for Cardboard Milk Cartons

Prevent scratches on your floor with cardbaord milk cartons. Cut off the top part of the milk carton and slip the lower part on furniture legs. Then you can slide heavy furniture without fear of scratching your floor.

Substituting Wax Paper For Parchment Paper

I have a question for our cake decorators.

I went to Jo-Ann Fabrics, ETC and looked at what they charged for a roll of parchment paper. OUCH!

Can I use waxed paper instead of paying the big price for parchment paper?

Thank you for your answers!

Does Pine Straw Attract Ticks?

Someone told me that pine straw attracts ticks. Does anyone know if that is true? I have tons of pine straw in the yard that I thought about putting around bushes and flowers. If it's going to attract ticks maybe I need to find something else. I was going to use it to save money but it sounds like I'd be spending that money on an exterminator instead.

Advice For Using Coupons Effectively

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this question.

I use coupons every week at the grocery store but often times I feel like a complete failure when I walk out with a $70 or $80 bill for what I purchased and only saving about $4 - $8 in coupons. I do all the things I've read that I'm supposed to do, like checking the flyers, making a list etc...

So my question is, how much in coupons should one have when they shop in order to be successful using coupons at the store?

Advice For Dealing With Chihuahua That Won't Go Outside

I have a dog that HATES going outdoors. I adopted him from the local humane society and I have reasons to believe that he was abused judging by his EXTREMELY abnormal behavior. Taking my dog outdoors is like a punishment to him, and whenever I get the leash he runs and hides (under the bed, under the couch). My dog is assumed to be somewhere around 8 or 9 months old. He is a mixed Chihuahua likely with a terrier (maybe a Jack Russell). I've tried a lot of different things. I've tried giving him treats outside (he won't take them), toys outside (he still barely plays as-is). I tried putting him on a schedule, after meals, in the morning, at night, before I leave, when I get home, I take him outside.

He wakes up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom... on my bedroom floor.

I take him out after every time he does it inside, I don't yell at him because I know that that will promote him to not do his business in front of me.

Also, he will typically poop outside, but never urinate.

Getting Rid of Fleas In Neighbors Yard

We treat our dog with Frontline every month on the dot. We just moved into a new house and before we did, our inside dog never had one flea. Our neighbors have 2 dogs that are outside most of the time. We have treated our dog, the yard, and the house. Our neighbors do not want to spray their yard or give their dogs Frontline. Is there anyway to get rid of fleas coming from your neighbor's yard?

Advice For Installing a Ceiling

What is the best method to install a ceiling? How should one decide on what kind of ceiling to install? When the ceiling fell down it exposed the insulation. Is this bad for the boys to be sleeping under? I hope not, this happened a few years ago and every time I bring it up my husband says not now. I think that maybe if I know what I am talking about he might be interested in listening to me this time.

Mysterious Skunk Smell

We've been dealing with a mysterious skunk smell that hits our house sporadically but frequently. We live in the country and have never seen a skunk here although they are surely around. Our dog has never been sprayed. We can't find any sign of a skunk living under a closed in porch or in the basement. Never the less, since last winter skunk smell has been very storing at times. We've tried outside have-a heart traps and tons of mothballs under the porch- just in case- . Does anyone have any suggestions? How long can a skunk smell linger and why would it be so erratic? I feel desperate heading into another winter! Thanks for any advise.

Does Scotchgard Damage Microfiber?

According to posts on ThriftyFun microfiber, being polyester (a plastic), should not be cleaned with acetone, which is known to destroy plastic. Someone also asked about the advisability of using Scotchgard on microfiber, but received no replies. I note on the Scotchgard ingredients list the word acetone. Question: Wouldn't using this product on microfiber cause damage?

How to Memorialize 2 Year Old Siamese

Yesterday, I had to send my 2 year old Siamese, Sarabi home to perch over the shoulder of our Lord, until I can join her once again. She came down very suddenly with wet FIP and there was nothing we could do. I held her and let her go with love whispered in her ear. She is buried at a family members house, who loves animals and will let me go sit with her whenever I need to.

My question is that I would like to get a piece of jewelry for my 7 year old Daughter and I to memorialize Sarabi. Not something with her picture, but maybe her name in the shape of a paw print or something. We both wear silver chains with a cross on them, so I am thinking something small to place on this chain.

I know my fellow Thrifty friends can help me out! P.S. This was my first animal of my own to die, I am sick with grief, being an adult stinks sometimes!

Eyebrow Pencil Not Lasting All Day

When I apply my eyebrow pencil in the mornings it is almost gone by noon. Please tell me what I am doing wrong. I started having this problem in the summer. I never had it in the winter time. I am not sure if the summer heat makes it disappear or maybe I need to buy a more quality pencil. I normally just buy the pencil that you sharpen from the dollar store. Is it better to use the eyebrow pencil (the one you have to sharpen) or the automatic pencil that never needs sharpening (the one that screws out when you turn it on one end)? Please help.

Is Bicarbonate of Soda a Substitute For Borax?

Can somebody tell me if I can substitute Bicarbonate of Soda(easily available here) instead of Borax (non-existent here) when I make up my own homemade washing powder? I'm using plain soap(grated) and washing soda as my ingredients but I feel I need a bit more boosting to the mix. something to brighten and whiten clothes would help but i don't know what to add. any suggestions please? p.s. I use vinegar as a fabric softener in my final rinse, too.
