Craft Project: Handmade Paper Frame

This is an old frame made new with the addition of handmade paper and a little ribbon. I did not make the paper myself, though I know there are directions on the internet and in books telling how to do this.

Max and Xam (Minchi)

Max is 1 year old, Xam is 7 months old. They are Min Pin/Chihuahua (Minchi). I got Max from a friend of my sister. He was so good natured and loving that I wanted another one. Not sure though cause Mum (the Min Pin) was getting old. Well she could not stay away from the neighbor's Chi and she got pregnant again and I put my bid in for another puppy. I lucked out and got Xam. Xami is black with brown socks, belly and part of his face. He is the cutest and he knows it. He is just like his big brother; loving and playful. They are WONDERFUL doggies. I am so glad we have them.

They like to play, play, play and play some more. Then conk out and sleep! Maxi is a red-haired Minchi with the biggest ears possible, and weighs 11 lbs. Xami is not far behind, he weighs 9 lbs cause he eats EVERYTHING. His ears don't stand up yet but it wont be too much longer before they do. They are the funniest dogs ever and they play well together. They are so a part of the family. They like to cuddle and snuggle and Maxi likes to wrap up so he has his own sheet to cover up in.

Use Junk Mail To Mark Dates On Cans

I always date mark my cans when I bring them home so I know to use them on time. More and more, labels are too slippery to write on and I hate the smell of markers. So now I use the flap of evelopes from junk mail that are going to paper recycling. I write the date on the opposite side of where the glue is and simply stick it to the can. No wasted scotch tape, no marker smell or marker headache, and a good use of envelopes that had no use otherwise.

Garden: Yard Spiders

We had just cleaned out grapevines in the backyard, so I thought, I should make something. Spiders came to mind for Halloween. I cut the lengths I wanted, nailed them to a piece of 2x4 and stuffed a black trashbag and nailed it on top. Glitter for the eyes. Large spiders in the yard, spoooky.

Jiffy Spiffy Brownies

I kind of do what Sandra Lee does, but this is my idea.

When I need chocolate, I need it bad...then I don't need it for a while. So, I go all out. I get one package of Jiffy Brownie Mix, add 1/2 cups Pecan or Walnut German Chocolate Frosting, and 1/2 cup peanut butter. If you really love nuts, add more of them, too, or use chunky peanut butter.

The result is that you have a brownie that is rich enough to not eat the whole pan, but so rich that you don't need any sweets for a while.

If you put them in cupcake pans, they are great sellers for fund raisers, too!
(If you sell them, however, make sure people know there are nuts in them.)

Enjoy!!

Today's Tips:

Saving a Wet Cellphone

I have saved my cellphone three times from certain death and I wish to pass along the technique. I dropped it once into a puddle under a vacation home I had rented, a fluke happening as I was looking at the rainwater puddling under the home. Two other times I stupidly dropped the phone into the toilet because I bought the cheap belt holder and it flipped out as I stood up. You have to immediately pop the battery off of the phone, you have about 5 seconds before the water infiltrates the chip and fries the electronics.

Practice this ahead of time so you know how to do it quickly. You now have some time to locate a hair dryer, after you kick yourself for being clumsy. Set the hair dryer on medium and proceed to dry the phone and battery for about 15 minutes. Relax and time your rescue and consider how much money you are saving, not to mention the hassle of going to the phone store and paying to replace the phone. If the phone is too hot to touch you are too close, you aren't trying to cook it, just dry it out, back off and turn the phone around every 30 seconds or so. After the 15 minutes, reattach the battery and you should be good to go.

There is a little white patch inside the battery compartment that turn colors if it gets wet. This alerts the phone company if you try to pass the phone off as faulty instead of admitting you accidentally dropped it in the toilet. This technique has not failed me yet. Good luck and buy the more expensive belt holder.

Put Your Address on Your Cane

I misplaced a cane somewhere if you can believe it. I must have left it in a shopping cart, I guess. So now I place an address sticker that you would put on an envelope on my cane. This way my address is on it so it can be returned.

Holiday Gift Etiquette

Many people, myself included, have hobbies such as sewing, painting or general crafting. I wanted to post a reality check for these people before the holidays.

The purpose of a gift is to show how much you value the recipient or thank them for something they've done; nothing else. It doesn't have to be expensive; just thoughtful.

It is NOT, NOT, NOT an opportunity for you to show off your hobby, what you believe to be your skills or what you believe to be your "good taste" (as in something entirely different from what the recipient likes).

Unless the recipient already wears the exact homespun style of homemade clothing you create or has actually paid you for paintings; it is NOT their taste no matter how polite they are in their praise. Someone who never wears wools or knits doesn't want your crochet or knitted items. They might not even be able to wear them due to allergies, etc but they shouldn't have to explain that to you. A gift is meant to be welcoming and thoughtful.

You shouldn't give a gift with the expectation of anything more than a polite thank you. Giving a gift to someone doesn't obligate the recipient to wear whatever you made them or eat whatever you enjoy cooking or use their home as a display of your gifts. Gifts shouldn't be used to lay guilt trips on anyone.

You might LOVE to bake cookies and give out the same dishes to everyone BUT people who eat healthy or are watching calories/sugar intake simply have NO use for them. Consider a group platter instead where you can take your dish home after the gathering.

You might also love to make up little jars of cookie or soup mix but how insulting is it to give one to someone who hates to bake or cook?

My coworker makes pumpkin butter every year. She jars the rest as Christmas gifts which no one in our dept can stand. She hounds people to pick up their labeled "gift" and then pursues them incessantly for the return of the jars and complains for weeks if one gets accidentally broken. Make sure you aren't making what should be a token of appreciation into a hated annual event so you can "use up" something.

You might love your ceramics class but if the person doesn't keep knick-knacks all over their home; the recipient does NOT want them. Don't try to convince the recipient how great what you like is. They have their own taste and you shouldn't use a holiday gift as a chance to disrespect them.

If someone has pets; understand that they LOVE their pets. Your opinion on how they should keep their pets does NOT matter. You make yourself unwelcome by dropping hints about how your gifts wouldn't be "trashed" or how you could get them something "nicer" if the recipient would only control their cat or dog.

Make yourself a cherished friend by giving them a pet friendly gift, instead of complaining that the cat has made a pull in the blanket you crocheted to drape over the recipient's couch; accept that the cat loves your gift and your recipient has been kind enough to display it in their home or make the cat a little crocheted blanket or bed of their own.

IF you want to give out your leftovers, garden surplus, etc, understand they are NOT gifts. Be polite and ask if anyone wants them first. Try to use disposable containers or boxes as much as possible.

Also, having a female to buy for does NOT mean they automatically like crafts or homespun items!

I have 3 girls and 1 boy. It's been very upsetting for my girls to be asked what they want for holidays only to be ignored and receive homemade clothing (that's never "just like" what's in style) and be made to feel guilty because they will not wear them. My son almost always receives items he actually enjoys and even he has begun to take offense to the grandmother and aunts who use holidays as an excuse to unload their homemade items. (My kids have been taught about asking for very reasonable gifts only IF they are asked.)

Yes, times are tough. If you have limited resources for gifting, you can still be thrifty and creative but above all it should be thoughtful.

DON'T ask to just "have gifts for the kids" when others have no children. That's rude beyond measure. In truth you are telling people to just give gifts to your children.

My youngest brother had a tough time when he was in grad school but he always brought the kids gifts they loved; many of which he picked up for free. We gave him gifts but I told him not to give me or my husband anything as it was unfair and he just couldn't afford it. He protested a bit but what are big sister's for?

Also be considerate of larger families. Don't make those kids feel unwanted or unvalued. Try to spend about the same on each child; regardless of how many in a family. Even if you cut down on what you spend per child all around. It will make a lifetime worth of difference in your relationship with those kids.

Finally, the gifts you just don't use are NOT desirable for regifting. Your postman doesn't want the tie you hate no matter how expensive you believe it to be or what designer it is. BUT if let's say my daughter started using the purse someone made for me (I never use a purse); take it as the compliment that it is.

Above all, a gift should be thoughtful and personal; making the person feel special and appreciated.

Denture Tablets for Toilet Cleaning

As Seen on TV - I watched a home cleaning show where they used denture tablets to clean a really filthy toilet. One day at a yard sale I saw a new box of denture cleaning tablets for 50 cents and thought, why not buy them to try in my toilets, though mine are never as bad as the one on the show. I dropped a couple of them into the toilets at home, waited for them to dissolve, and was pleasantly surprised to find out how easily the toilet cleaned - almost no elbow grease. I probably wouldn't buy the tablets at the drug store, but for a yard sale find, they were a great purchase.

What To Harvest From Your Flower Garden

Grab some freebies from your garden for next year!

I pick off dried marigold flowers and save in a paper bag (labeled) to plant next year. Each dried flower contains tons of seeds!! Also, you can root sprigs of rosemary and impatiens in water and keep in a sunny window, to plant next year.

Also, look around for pretty or fragrant herbs and flower heads, pine needles, little pine cones and leaves for a homemade potpourri. Just dry (the simplest way is to put them in a basket and leave in a dark dry space. Shake now and then). When they are dried, you can add dried orange peel, cinnamon sticks broken, or whole, bay leaves, etc. then shake a few drops of essential oil (I like cinnamon) and put out in a pretty bowl for your own homemade welcome to fall!

If you have hydrangeas, pick off flowers now, and put them in a basket, they will dry naturally and look gorgeous!!

Gardening: Use a Disposable Cake Platter as a Mini Greenhouse

This is just a frugal idea that popped into my head while doing dishes? (Ha Ha Ha)

I bought a cake for my daughter's birthday and I was trying not to waste anything. So I decided upon using the cake platter and clear plastic lid as a mini greenhouse. I can start some of my perennials in January, so by mid June I should have quite a bunch of plants to plant.

Using Your Coffee Maker Without Electricity

Due to extended electrical outages caused by the last two hurricanes, we have discovered a few tips for coping with no electricity. The first couple days we made do with instant coffee. We have a gas range, so could heat water in a kettle. Then I discovered a simple way to use my coffee maker even though there was no electricity.

Just prepare the coffee and filter in the usual way. Bring your kettle of water to a boil. Pour enough in your coffee filter basket to fill your filter, being careful not to overfill it or the coffee grounds will spill over the top. Set the filter and the pot in place. As the water runs through, just repeat this step until you have enough water to fill the pot. Pour the coffee into a thermos to keep it warm or reheat on the stove in a pan as needed.

Reuse a Bird Bath Base

Recycle that base from your broken bird bath! Many times I have rescued the bottom portions of those broken concrete bird baths that are out for the trash.

Just turn them over and sink the narrow top end into the ground by using a narrow bladed shovel or a post hole digger until it is sitting stable in the dirt. The solid concrete bases can be used as a plant display stand or you can put a large clay pot saucer on the top for a bird bath.

The hollow bird bath bases can be used for a plant holder by sitting the pot in the base, or fill the base with potting soil and planting a plant in it, or, you can put a clay pot saucer on the top for a bird bath. Use your imagination!

You can also paint or decorate the base before you place it in the ground to give your garden extra zing.

Organize Coupons In Card Sheet Protectors

I use quite a few coupons for groceries. I have a binder and some of the sheets for baseball card collectors (9 to a page). I have all of the coupons separated into categories and 9 to a page. This way I can see all of my coupons instead of going through a envelope all I have to do is flip to that category. I also have a plastic sheet protector in the front so that when I use a coupon I just slide it in there until time to check out, that way they are all in one spot. I found that this makes it easier to keep track of my coupons during my shopping trip.

Clothes Smell Sour

My clothes smell real bad. I have tried washing them twice each time I visit the laundromat. I followed your instructions regarding vinegar and today when I on the train everyone started sniffing around me. When my fellow employees past my desk the smell themselves. I am desperate and need advice asap.

I sometimes ask people if I smell funny, they say no but it doesn't sound sincere. My sense of smell is poor so I can't even tell if I do smell funny. I used to wash my clothes 2-3 times a week. I cry sometimes because I don't know what to do. I know its not B.O, my clothes just smell sour. I am afraid to wear perfume.

I am becoming more depressed every day. Today I went straight to the nearest clothing store and purchased a whole outfit and then on my lunch break went out and purchased bras because I noticed they smell really bad. Please help me or I might just lose my job.

Can Excess Exercise Cause Puppy To Have Diarrhea?

I have a 12 1/2 weeks old chihuahua mix puppy. She just finished getting her shots last week and just a few minutes ago she went to her training pad to poop and had diarrhea. I read somewhere that excess exercise can sometimes cause that, she was out and about all day with me and then after like four hours of resting I took her out for a walk around my block. She's not used to this so could that maybe be it? I'm worried because I keep reading all this stuff about Parvo, but she has her shots already so it doesn't make any sense. Can you guys help me?

Finding Your Frost Dates
By Ellen Brown

Every growing zone has an average number of frost free days-days between the last frost in the spring and the first frost in the fall. These frost-free days are our growing season. Our chance to nurture flowers, vegetables, and fruit to maturity. For gardeners living in the coldest zones, the threat of frost never completely goes away. For gardeners living in the warmest zones, the threat of frost sometimes never comes. For the rest of us, it's a bit of a guessing game.
