I have a Kenmore refrigerator freezer model #596.76503500. The ice maker is not working. How do I check the tubing for ice blockage? We had some dry black substance on top of some of the cubes and I wonder if that could have something to do with no water getting to the unit.

I found a great website: repairclinic.com
They can probably help you figure it out if the readers here can't help. The site has lots of great information.

I'm not sure how to check your tubing, but the "black stuff" you mentioned could be from a dirty filter. Any fridge with an ice maker usually has some type of filter that needs to be periodically changed.

A site that both my husband and I frequently go to is www.fixya.com. It's free to join and they offer great repair info and support for just about everything out there. Good luck! ~April (Albany, Ga)

Request: Kenmore Refrigerator Ice Maker Isn't Making Ice

Archived on 07/07/2009

Kenmore ice maker will not fill. Filter screen is clean, with water to solenoid valve. Solenoid is good and water line to ice maker is clear. Can not make solenoid operate to fill ice maker. Any ideas?

Take the ice cube bin drawer out and look to see of there is a build up of ice on the freezer wall that prevents it from being put securely into place. Ditto for the check on the bin. Also, look on the back and underside of the bin. Then carefully put the bin back on its tracks and shove it really hard back in place in the freezer. Don't just wiggle it into place because this won't work. I discovered that our bin would scoot away from it's moorings by a fraction of an inch occasionally. Although our fridge is a different brand, this info might help you. (07/02/2009)

Does your fridge have a filter for the water? We had to replace it, then it worked fine. Instead of going local, try eBay if you need to buy one. I got it cheaper from the local dealer on eBay with free shipping, than I would have from going in and buying it. (07/02/2009)

What I've done and others I've recommended this to is to turn the refrigerator off after emptying everything out. Leave door open and allow everything to come to room temperature. Then turn back on. In our case, it took care of it and it started working. I'm not sure if this will fix your problem, but I know several people that this worked wonderfully on theirs. It's cheaper than calling a repairman and a simple thing to try. It worked for my refrigerator. (07/04/2009)

I have a Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator that stopped making ice. There is sufficient water pressure at the solenoid valve but there is no water in the tray. I cannot see any ice jammed in the system anywhere.

Sometimes the opening to the tray freezes up. We use a hair dryer on that one spot. For safety, turn off power to freezer first. (04/04/2009)

RE: Kenmore Refrigerator Ice Maker Isn't Making Ice

On our Amana we could hear water running for the icemaker and then it would shut off. It did that repeatedly. We discovered a leaking hose only after opening the back of the refrigerator. We cut off the leaking part (shortened the hose) and reconnected it. After that repair, it took quite awhile for the first tray of ice to be made and dumped into the bin. (04/06/2009)

I have a one year old Kenmore fridge with an ice maker that is not working. I changed the water filter yesterday and the water dispenser is working fine. However, the red light on the ice maker control is flashing and the unit is not making any ice. Any ideas? Thanks.

That happened to me too, but it took more than 1 year. Anyway, I discussed this with more than one appliance person, and was told that failure to change the filter often enough would result in the ice maker breaking. I definitely waited too long to change the filter, longer than a year. Like you, my water still works and the dispenser for both. I chose to buy ice trays & empty them into the ice container. Then they come out of the door dispenser. (01/04/2009)

Try this. Take the front cover off, this should just pop off. Take a real small hammer and lightly tap on the brass coated plate where your plastic gears are and water fill adjustment screw is. Sometimes this will get just a little frost and jam the gears up. Also check your gears and make sure they are not striped. These are plastic gears, you should have a space on one of them that makes it trip for water fill. If that does not work check the line where water comes in take a hair dryer and defrost it. Sometimes they freeze up. Last thing, remove front cover and check for burnt wires. If none of this works you probably need a new one. I have fixed many by tapping on front metal cover where the plastic gears are. (01/05/2009)

Have you tried simply removing and reinserting the filter? (01/09/2009)
