I just read another article about decorating with finds from the thrift store or picked up off the street and refinished/painted, etc. One great tip from that article is to paint (enamel) everything black! That way, an old 60's dresser can be turned into an elegant buffet. (Keep the old hardware.) She also enameled some old caned 60's dining room chairs she had inherited. I love wood, and hate to cover it over - but with cheaper veneers, etc., it's a good idea for sprucing them up. It gives a semi-oriental feel to the decor.
