Chai (Weimeraner)

Chai is a 6 month old Weimeraner that was given to us by our Fed Ex guy who bought a house in a neighborhood that has covenants that limit the number of dogs he could have. His favorite things are to catch a plush soccer ball doggy toy and eat!

Setting the Table - Party for 17

We were expecting 17 people for a BBQ one August evening but were afraid of either it being too hot or rain so we decided to set up to eat indoors. It is amazing what a few folding tables and pieces of plywood and vinyl tablecloths can do to make a wonderful dining table. Some old mirrored panels were put back to use under all the candles I could find to add sparkle to the table setting.

Piers the Cat

This is Piers, our cat. He's 6 years old and is incredibly patient with our 2 small children. We got him and his sister (who met an unfortunate end a year ago) from one of my husband's co-workers whose cat got friendly with a traveling tom cat. His two favorite activities are lying on our bed and watching the birds at the feeder on our back porch.

Preventing Mealy Bugs

Tips for preventing mealy bugs. Post your ideas.

Put a stick of peppermint gum (still in it's wrapper) in your flour canister to keep mealy bugs away. The peppermint flavor won't penetrate your flour.

Soften Brown Sugar

Soften a rock-hard box of brown sugar quickly by just putting it in the microwave for 15 second or so, then check. If it isn't soft enough, increase by 10 second intervals. Don't overdo it or you will have syrup!

Removing Gum from Hair With Skin So Soft

Tips for removing gum from hair. Post your ideas.

Removing Gum from Hair With Peanut Butter

It is inevitable that sooner or later your child will get gum in his or her hair. Before you reach for the scissors, rub some peanut butter into the mess, and slide it out onto paper towels until the gum is gone. Then shampoo out the peanut butter.

Making Cracker Crumbs

As a physical therapist, I put to use the concept of compression on the spine to come up with this idea to quickly and neatly create cracker crumbs. Whenever you need crumbs, take the UNOPEN sleeve of crackers and poke a few pinholes in it with a straight pin. Then - remember the old exercise "I must, I must, I must increase my bust"? - put the ends of the sleeve of crackers in the palm of each hand and press your hands toward each other as if you were doing that exercise. You will feel the column of crackers gradually collapse and crumble. Try to keep the column as straight as possible to maintain the effect, although as it collapses it obviously loses its shape.

The pinholes are to allow air inside the sleeve to escape; otherwise the pouch would pop and your crackers and crumbs would go everywhere! Once you've compressed the sleeve as far as possible, you can then crush any remaining large pieces between your fingers right inside the sleeve. Open one end, and empty the crumbs where needed. No muss, no fuss, and no mess! Keep this from happening to your spine by getting sufficient calcium (it's not just found in milk, you know!), Vit D, and exercise (the only fountain of youth we have!).

Diet Tips - Desperate To Lose Weight

I'm not sure it this is the appropriate place to ask, but I see so many good suggestions and ideas on this website.. I thought I'd give this a try. I'm 50 years old, overweight and need help. I know there are many of you out there who have the same issue as myself. About 50 pounds overweight and as I get older, the weight continues to creep. I've been on every diet imaginable in the last 15 years. I've always succeeded in losing, but then gain it all back and then some!

Here is part of my problem, I have a long commute each day (3 hours total), and have a desk job. So I'm tired by the time I get home. I do walk when I can, and have changed my eating habits. I don't eat after 8:00 pm and have cut way back on my sugar intake. Problem is, I'm always hungry, and it's a struggle! I think about food all the time. I just joined up with my local community center and will take yoga classes for one hour on the weekend. Also, aqua aerobics in the evening. Honestly, I'm not sure I have the energy to go to evening classes, but I'm going to try.

Does anyone out there have any useful suggestions? Or, tell me how you lost weight.

Maggie

Black Marks On Walls From Vacuum

I have black marks on my white walls from the vaccum. They are from the rubber bumpers on the side of the vaccum so you don't scratch or dent the walls. I have tried everything that I can think of to get these off and nothing is working.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Glass Lids Stuck Together

I have two glass casserole dish lids that are stuck together like glue on paper. I have tried soaking them in hot and cold water, banging them apart, dish soap, oil, and a knife to try and separate the two. I have been unsuccessful so far. Does anyone have the magic solution to this odd and inconvenient problem?

Keeping Cilantro (Coriander) Fresh

Can anyone tell me how to keep fresh cilantro? When I buy it, there is so much in a bundle that I have trouble using it all before it starts to go bad. I usually just keep it in the bag, it comes with a papertowel in it to absorb moisture and I leave the bag partially open to breath. I'm sure there is a way that would keep it fresh longer.

Thanks for any tips,
Shirley from IA

How to Winterize a Dog House?

I have been feeding 8 feral kittens. Only one will come to me. I have an old doghouse that some of them are sleeping in. How can I winterize it? I live in Ontario and we get cold winters here. Has anyone used a heat pad from home depot? Supposedly you can heat it in microwave and place it in cat bed and will keep warm for 12 hours. I'm not sure that it will work.

Any suggestions will be helpful as we are going into the cold season soon.

Borax vs. Salt for Fleas

We are infested with fleas, I guess lots of other people are having this problem this year. it's VERY frustrating and driving us NUTS. We've got more flea bites than the CAT! I guess they're called "sand fleas" or something like that. They come in from the grass outdoors on our clothes and such.

Anyway... I've seen posts about 20 Mule Team Borax and also about SALT. We've tried the Diotamaceous Earth - it works a little bit but the fleas are still here.

We have a very old house with pine wood floors as well as area rugs. Do you recommend Borax or salt and how should we use it?

Thanks so much in advance for a prompt reply from anyone who knows.

Paying a Large Dental Bill

I am wondering if anyone has read or bought the book "Free Money To Pay Your Bills" and wondering if it helped or has worked for you. The reason I am wondering is because my husband needs 12,000.00 worth of dental work done and fast and we need help to come up with this money. The waiting list is too long to get him into a low income family discount dentist in our area. So if you have any information for me that could help we would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Jen

Riding Mower Dies When It Accelerates

My riding mower will start on choke, but when I try to accelerate, the mower cuts off. I have cleaned gas tank, put in a new gas line and filter. I have also put in a new air filter, took carburetor off and cleaned it. Does anyone have any more ideas?

Changing the Color of Tile Grout

The tile in my kitchen is light grey and not very old, however, I hate the dark grey grout that was used. My kitchen cabinets are white and I would like to make the grout white at least a lighter grey.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this inexpensively?

TIA!

Dealing With Frizzy Hair

I have hair that is long, about mid back. It is very frizzy. If I use a straightening iron it is flat and not frizzy and looks so much better and healthier. Of course, I don't have time to wash, dry and straighten my hair every day. I would like to know any tried and true products or suggestions to get the frizzies out. I do wash it every day and use conditioner. I have used a few non-frizz products that are no good. Help.

Thanks
Lisa

Recipe Using Day Old Bagels

I'm looking for ways to use bagels that are a few days old. Has anyone used them in a breakfast casserole type of a recipe or bread pudding or stuffing, etc.? I'd love to have recipes or direct me to a Website that might have some ideas.

Please help, me as I'm trying to be frugal on a limited income.

Thanks,
Eva
