Today's Photo Contest Entries

Lady (English Bulldog), She's Family

Here's our English Bulldog "Lady". She's 4 1/2 yrs, Red brindle with fawn and white. She's not just a dog, she's family.

She is with us constantly. Life is grand having our little Lady!

She was given to our son from his Papa & Grandma for X-mas in 2000!

She was born on Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7th.) Since having her we have had years, days, hours of enjoyment. She loves to play tug-a-war, her favorite. She talks a lot. She has different sounds, voice tones for "I'm hungry", "play with me", "who's there?", "let me out" and a few more. She has a sweet personality and loves everyone. She is very social with other animals also. She loves to go anywhere with us.

Even a walk to the mailbox delights her. She gets excited to go anywhere with a gallop or two around the room and to the door making sure she's the first one out! She's one of a kind. We're so glad she's ours!

1. She sits on the couch at my In-laws for a family b-day party!

2. At the new park she is all ears to the activities around her.

3. Delighted with her new Christmas present.

Saving Money on Your Grocery Bill

Tips for saving money on your grocery bill. Post your ideas.

Shopping Sales and Cooking Ahead

I buy things when they are on sale and use coupons to save money. I also buy food in family size and divide it into freezer bags and freeze. I prepare extra meals at home on my days off so that I can freeze and just heat up on busy nights when there is a concert or sports practice so I don't have to always get fast-food on the run.

In reply to Feeding a Puppy That Can't Eat Dry Food Yet

And for anyone wondering as many do about what to do with an abandoned or neglected puppy:

As with any dog be sure they see a vet for shots and check ups and never feed them anything that isn't designed for canine.

Feeding the puppy can be quite simple and easy, if the teeth are showing then they have some ability to chew. Simply take puppy food and saturate it with water, whisk or blend with a mixer or blender after water is absorbed and serve to puppy, start with a really soupy mix and gradually thicken as the days go on. Placing the pups front paws in the food will entice them to eat.

By 4-5 weeks they will be able to eat unblended moist kibble. By 5-6 weeks they should be able to eat dry kibble. Be sure to serve plenty of water and never feed a puppy people food or milk products unless specially designed for puppies. Good luck and have fun.

"Books I Have Read in My Lifetime"

Recently as part of some estate work, I arranged for the removal of the contents of the deceased person's home library (she was an avid reader). There was a Journal at the end of the book shelf and when I opened it, it read "THE BOOKS I HAVE READ IN MY LIFETIME". The inception date was 1933; the entries were: date started, date completed, title of book, author, comments. It made me think, how many of us have recorded every book we have ever read? What a legacy to leave behind.

A Fingerprint Hunt

This tip is good if you have small children around or large children like my husband, (ha ha), and tend to get fingerprints on your walls. Take fifteen minutes every Saturday with a small container of soapy water and a rag and go on a fingerprint hunt. It never takes longer than fifteen minutes. I started doing this when I had a home daycare and all white walls.

Locating Printer Manuals

If you buy a used printer and it doesn't come with the book, you can go to the makers web site and look up your model. They will have your printers book that you can print out for free. Nice service. You can also read the part you need first to figure out the combinations you need to get it up and going before you use it.

By Ardis Ilene Barnes

Editor's Note: We've done this with many different types of appliances and equipment. Just look for the manufacturer's website. Most have old manuals or instruction booklets for their products. You can also download the latest driver from the printer company's website.

Marigolds for Aphids

Garden pests, especially aphids can't stand to be around marigolds, so I plant them around everything, especially carrots and strawberries. Marigolds spread so nicely on their own. When the marigolds are all dried up pull the seeds out of where the flower was and either plant them or put them in a plastic bag for next year.

Destroying Ant Hills

When you find those dreaded ant hills there's a cheap and sure way to get to them all, even the queen. Boil a large pot boiling water and pour it directly on the hill. Pay more attention to the ones closest to you house first, then work your way out. Use plenty of boiling water to make sure you get the queen too.

Uses for Glad Press'n Seal Wrap

Uses for Glad Press'n Seal Wrap. Post your ideas.

I have discovered several great uses for the new "Glad" brand Press'n Seal plastic wrap. First I used it as a "bib" for myself. It seems as if I always drop food on my "chest". I've been trying to think of something I could use temporarily and came up with this. Once it's plastered to your shirt/blouse, it's hard to see because it's not shiny. It stays on really well and doesn't leave any residue when removed.

Except for the size of the box, this would be a great carry-with-you product. I suppose you could keep it in your car and put it on before going in to eat somewhere (especially for kids) but I don't know what the heat/cold in a vehicle would do to the sticky part.

Anyway, it can also be used over the seat of upholstered dining chairs, car seats, and anywhere else you want to protect. I don't think it would work for animal claws and dirt, but it might be worth a try.

It can also be used as an "apron" when cooking to protect from splatters to your clothes.

Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Remove from heat, add butter, soda, and salt, and stir enough to blend. Pour into buttered pans. When cool enough to handle, gather into a ball and pull between ungreased fingertips until firm and light in color. Cut into pieces and wrap in waxed paper. Add a few drops of oil of peppermint or peppermint extract to the above recipe before pulling. Use a 6 qt. pan to mix ingredients. Pour into 9x13 inch pans.

Smelly Kitchen Problem!

Hello

I have a nice large kitchen and it's where i spend most of my day on the computer. (Yes, the computer is in my kitchen!)

The problem is that when I cook fish or Prawns(Shrimp) the kitchen smells for days. I eat them several times a week as part of my diet.

I have tried bowls of vinegar, checked the drains, used Plug-in air fresheners, potpourri but nothing seems to get rid of the smell well enough.

Has anyone any suggestions PLEASE? (Thank you in advance if you do post a reply :D)

Moving? Don't Leave Your Mind Behind
By Ian White

Moving to a new home is exciting, but let's face it, it can also get very stressful. The worse mistake someone can make when a move is over the horizon is to procrastinate. Do yourself and your family a favour, plan and start preparing for your move at least a month in advance. It will save you undue stress, and it will make moving to your new home a more enjoyable experience.
