Building a Sleeping Loft in a Closet

We have a little girl that stays with us most every weekend and school breaks. She likes having friends over sometimes and we needed another bed in the room with her without taking up a lot of space.

My husband took down the closet doors and made a loft in the closet. He re-attached the rods under the new bed and the closet is still fully functional. We painted and papered the top of the closet in a jungle theme and call it the "tree house". He even added a shelf up there to hold books, stuffed animals, etc. It looks great!

Mother's Day Garden

For Mother's Day 7 years ago, my husband and sons picked several rose bushes to plant for me in my "Mother's Day" Garden. It has bloomed beautifully since then and it was great to have all 4 sons and my husband work together on a project for me. Here's a flower from my garden.

Vegas (Siamese) and Reno (Siamese Mix)

In this picture, Vegas was maybe 1 and Reno was 6 months. Vegas is a Seal Point Siamese and Reno is a mix breed with some Siamese in him. They are both male.

Vegas was found in our apartment parking lot one rainy afternoon crying under a parked car. I purchased Reno from a farm so Vegas would have a companion.

Vegas likes to hang up under my husband and Reno likes to hang up under Vegas. Vegas and Reno have their play times together. They were looking out the kitchen window when I took this picture from outside.

Today's Tips:

Save Money on Prescription Drugs

With the economy these days prescription costs are just one more thing people worry about. Did you know that you can pay a reasonable price on many of the most needed medications if you just do your homework? Here are some tips to help.

  • Did you know that most pharmacies are willing to price match other pharmacies (including Costco and Wal-mart prices)? They may charge a small fee, but it might be worth it to call around.

  • Many of the big chains are now selling "fast moving meds" such as HCTZ or simvastatin for a discounted $12-$20 for a 3 month supply? This includes, but not limited to Kmart, Walmart, Longs. Rite Aid may charge an enrollment fee, but I believe the other 3 just offer this program at no charge.

  • If you live near a K-mart, check out their website. They post what is covered. Check with your other pharmacies as well they may post their information on the internet.

  • Many of the chain pharmacies will honor another's coupon, remember they want your business. Several of them offer "gift cards" for a new or transferred prescription.

  • If you have a high dollar medication such as "Advair" visit that drug's website. They send out a "1 free inhaler coupon" and they send you coupons for future use. Do this with other drugs like Plavix, ProAir, etc. You would be surprised what offers are out there.

  • Most manufactures offer patient assistance programs for drugs that are high cost (Plavix, as an example). Email them or call.

  • Never hesitate to ask your doctor if he has samples, this may cut your cost for a week or so.

I am full of this info, I have been in the pharmacy field since 1997! Hope this helps someone, and remember it never hurts to ask your pharmacist how your drugs can become less expensive and more affordable.

Keeping Track of Email Coupons

This suggestion is about coupons you receive from restaurants or grocery stores by email. To keep better track of which to use first due to expiration dates, I forward them to my email address with the name of the restaurant and the expiration date in the subject bar. All I have to do is scan the list instead of opening up all of those emails.

My new subject bar will look something like this: "Sweet Tomatoes, exp. June 6". It is much easier to keep track of coupons this way and I don't waste paper and ink printing out the coupons, only to not use them.

Don't Procrastinate, Get That Cleaning Done!

If you try to wait to clean, you shouldn't. Just get it out of the way so you can hang out with friends and family. Also, don't yell at your kids if they don't want to clean, because you remember being a kid don't you? You didn't want to have to spend your weekend having to vacuum or do dishes of fold laundry did you?

Disposable Diaper Tips

As a mother of two and one due in a few days, I've used many diapers. Huggies seem to work the best. However they are one of the most expensive brands. Giant just dropped the prices of Huggies and Pampers a dollar. Also, if you are pregnant, make sure to stop into a maternity clothes store and find out if they have a mailing list. Usually they will send you a ton of great coupons.

Prepare Your Freezer for Hurricane Season

Each year preparing for hurricane season, I fill plastic containers (ice cream buckets, milk jugs), with water to freeze. Should we lose power, the ice can be used to refrigerate food and drinks while the other containers help keep the freezer cold. Remember a full freezer keeps cold the longest.

Managing Backup on My Computer

Once my computer started automatically jettisoning information. The only way to stop it was to quickly press the OFF button. When this started, I hired a computer repair person to take a look at it. He did a few things and the computer has been running just fine - and then, it happened again almost a year later.

I backed everything up onto my external hard drive and performed one more action. I accumulate recipes and information on an almost daily basis and backing it up daily to the external hard drive is a chore. So I made a special folder on my desktop to solve this situation. Into this folder I copy anything that I have saved on my desktop since it was last backed up.

So if the computer starts to act crazy again, all I have to do is rescue the folder and not worry about the rest of the info on the hard drive.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

There was an old Captain of a very old ship, and everyday at a certain time he would lock himself up in his cabin and look inside a mysterious black box. He did this every day, but he told nobody what was inside that box. Then one day he died and in his testament he wrote: "Now you can open the black box."

So they opened the black box. And what they found was a piece of paper, on it was written "Starboard is right, port is left."

Washer Leaving Brown Stains on Clothing

I live in an apartment complex, I use their laundry room for washing clothes. I have noticed that after washing and drying some of my clothes, there are "tea" colored spots on them. This has happened in other apartment building laundry facilities I have used also. Why is this happening? What can I do about getting them out? I've tried bleach, to no avail.

Cat Urine Smell on Hardwood Floors

My son bought a house that smells like cat pee. I have read many articles on the subject, however nothing I have read specifically answers this question. We have sanded the floors down to bare wood.

I was going to use bleach to see if I could get rid of the smell, but I am not sure if I can put the diluted bleach directly on the sanded floor. I am afraid that after all of the work we have done, the bleach will harm the floors. Any suggestions? Can we mop the bare wood floor with the bleach solution, and is bleach the best solution?

When it gets hot or humid, my mom says the wooden shelves in her bedroom give off a nasty smell. They have been treated and have been shellacked. Homemade Dishwashing Detergent Recipe

I am trying to make the homemade dish washing detergent , using 20 mule team borax, washing soda, fresh fruit, and glycerin with vinegar rinse. What are the measurements for this recipe?

I tried one using baking soda, 20 mule team borax, and a tiny bit of regular dish soap, I used Dawn. It left a terrible residue on the dishes that I had to use CLR by hand to remove it. I am using my electric automatic dish washer. Thanks for the help.

Chalk as a Spot Remover

My mother had some great chalk spot remover, which I inherited. But I am running out and have been wondering how to replace it. Somewhere I saw that you could use ordinary playground chalk for similar spot cleaning (great for grease spots). You apply the chalk, it absorbs the grease, and you can just dust it off. I picked up some sidewalk chalk at my last visit to the 99 cent Store. It's not quite as soft, but I think it will do.

Getting Help With Vet Bills

My 1 yr old puppy Gizmo just got parvo last week. We have been doing out patient treatment for him but he's not taking it and needs to be hospitalized at a cost of about $1600.00. So if there's anyone out there who knows of something for me to do I would love to hear it. Thank you and god bless.
