I am looking for some wonderful, easy Low Carbohydrate recipes for only one person. I have lost 21 pounds, but am stuck at the same weight for the past 2 weeks! I am getting tired of just salads, and either Salmon or Chicken. Thanks so very much.

Bridesmaid Gift Baskets

For bridesmaids gifts for my daughter, I made up a "mix" for gourmet muffins and put the mix in a zip-lock bag and wrapped it up in some white silk-like material, put a silver bow around it and tied the baking instructions around the top. I also made some homemade strawberry butter, put it in some cute little jars I found at a discount store, tied a ribbon around the top and stuck a little spreader down under the ribbon (to hold it). I found the spreaders at a dollar store -- 6 for $1. I tied a little white bow around the handles of the spreaders.

Then for each bridesmaid I put the mix and butter in a basket and put some white flowers in the basket. A lot of this I already had on hand. The material I used was actually a sheer curtain that I had bought but never used, and the book with the recipes in it I found at a yard sale for a dime! Instead of having the goodies already baked, the girls can bake them whenever they want!

Mount Saint Helens

Mount Saint Helens in 2006 with steam rising from the newly forming dome. It's a beautiful place and anyone that gets a chance should visit.

Kittens in a Paint Tray

My four kittens are nine weeks old. They chase each other and they love to tussle. They also attack a piece of soft plastic I leave dangling on a string. Kittens are quick to find good use for a litter box, therefore, place the litter box outside your home. Kittens are fun and freedom loving and they have the intelligence to understand your gentle hand and body and eye signals, as well as the tone of your voice; but a kitten also has pride and dignity. If you don't care for it, it will not care for you!

Do not keep your cat as a prisoner in your house! Create a small swinging door and allow your cat the freedom to leave or enter at will. However, do have your cat spayed or neutered or prepare to care for more kittens. Bring your kitten for walks outside and show it the four corners of your territory. Even city cats quickly learn what territory they can control. A cat quickly understands your danger signals. Point to a car and then back away from the vehicle or the dog or the boulevard.

Attach Interfacing For Long Lasting Sewing Patterns

My subject is sewing patterns. I was making a lot of hats for my granddaughters so what I did was I took iron on interfacing and ironed it onto the pattern to make it last longer. No more tearing of the pattern and I am sure it will me last forever.

Swap Out Incandescent Bulbs With Compact Fluorescent

Swapping 16 incandescent bulbs for compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) saves emissions equivalent to taking a car off the road for a year. Source: EnergyStar.gov

This is something we can all do, plus it saves us money on utility bills. If you replace just one out of four of your light bulbs with fluorescents, you can save about 50% on your lighting bill.

Wind Up Flashlights For Camping

I purchased a wind up flashlight to use, never have to worry about if I bought enough batteries or if they will last long enough. A minute of cranking will last about 20 minutes and that's usually enough time to get to the shower house/restrooms.

Juice For Getting Rid Of Fruit Flies

If you are plagued by those pesky little fruit flies and do not want to use chemical sprays in your kitchen, try this. Pour grape juice or red wine in a small container - about 1/3 full, cover the top with plastic wrap and punch holes in it large enough for the flies to enter. They will crawl through the holes to get at the juice but cannot escape. When there are no flies left flying around, just pour the contents down the drain. It really works!

Natural Baking Soda Toothpaste Recipes

After reading about the recall of toothpaste, I thought I'd pass along this "natural" tip. A good homemade toothpaste is a mix of a little baking soda and a little hydrogen peroxide.* Doesn't have a great flavor but it cleans and whitens and is safe! From now on, I'm not buying any more toothpaste regardless of flavor.

*Or just use baking soda if you don't want to use the HP.

Cheaper Wedding Pictures

When I got married, I had a college photography student take the professional pictures (so paid less). Then I asked 6 friends if they could spend the day taking pictures they thought were interesting. I told the friends not to waste film on standard pictures (Ex: feeding the cake, daddy's little girl dance, the garter, etc). This was 25 years ago and I'm still glad I did it this way. You wouldn't believe the pictures I ended up with. I mean, one person can't be everywhere. And I had over 100 pictures to choose from besides the professional ones.

Making Cookies in a Toaster Oven

Last week I wanted some home made cookies. I had all the ingredients for my cookies but I just hated to heat up my gas oven. I had not turned on the A/C yet for the season, did not want to heat up the house and I did not want to use any gas I did not have to. I decided to try and find a small toaster oven at the next yard sale or thrift shop.

So a few days later, I was at a charity run shop and, lo and behold, there was a pretty nice toaster oven for $5. It was not greasy or dirty. However, I was not sure it would even work. I hesitated a few minutes and then decided to give it a shot and pay the $5. I took it home plugged it in and it worked! I then proceeded to clean it up and make it look nice on my counter.

People laugh at me for saving stuff that normally would be thrown away, however, my "saving stuff" paid off for me. I could not get the removable baking sheet to the oven as shiny as I wanted so I dug into my saved disposable aluminum pie pans, roasting pans, etc. and found a large piece that I could cut down to size. I did not want to use foil as I knew it would not hold up as well as a nice thick piece of aluminum would. I cut my pan to fit the baking sheet and put it in the oven. It looks like a new oven!

I then proceeded to make my small batch of cookies and it worked out perfect. No hot kitchen, no expensive toaster oven! All for $5 and a little ingenuity! My friends can laugh all they want but the jokes on them!

Now, what have you done lately that was frugal, thrifty and enhanced the quality of your life?

Painting Tips (For Inside the House)

Tips to help you while painting the interior of your house.

Put Rollers In a Bag

When taking a break while painting the inside of your home, you can wrap rollers in plastic bags (make sure there are no holes and all air is squeezed out of bag) and place in fridge. This will keep them moist and you can use them again without having to clean them.

By Seacat61

Place Paintbrush In Freezer

If you're not finished painting, cover the paintbrush with plastic wrap and place in freezer. The brush will thaw and be great.

By Howard

Keep It Moist With A Wet Towel

When I paint with a roller and pan, and I have to step away for a short while, I lay the roller on the pan and then cover both with a wet hand towel. It keeps everything moist.

By Mary

Line Tray With A Plastic Bag

When using a paint roller and tray, place the tray in a plastic shopping/carrier bag then pour the paint in. When finished, remove the bag and place in the bin - the tray will have very little paint on it and be very easy to clean.

Regards,
Jo (Who always hated washing the tray until she found this tip!)

Foil In The Paint Tray

Line your paint tray with foil for easier cleanup.

By Linda

5 Painting Tips

  1. After opening a new can of paint, using a hammer and a larger nail, punch five or 6 holes in the retaining groove of the can. Of course, be careful not to slop paint around. When you dip the brush in the paint and then wipe it against the side of the can rim, the paint fills the groove as it always does, but with the holes it runs right back into the can.
  2. Write the date, brand, and color used under the light switch for a handy reference in each room.
  3. A skateboard makes a nifty scoot-along seat when painting baseboards.
  4. Tape a paper plate to the bottom of the gallon paint can to avoid splatter and spills.
  5. Wrap all your hardware in foil before painting. This means metal parts like door knobs, hinges, pulls etc.

Wet Paper For Masking

Cut strips of paper, moisten and place on windows when painting the frames. They will stick long enough for you to paint and save scraping paint off the glass.

By Siris

Add Vanilla

To get rid of smoke smells in a house, just add vanilla to the paint, works like a charm

By Diana

Two Great Tips

Buy lots of the blue painters tape (like masking tape, only lots better) it makes every thing a lot easier, just remember to rub it down good and to peel it off as soon as you are done before the paint dries, or the paint can come with it.

After living in a house that the celing was painted in a flat paint, it seemed to obsorb all the light and looked dull and dirty, I painted it with semi gloss or satin paint. What a difference, the light bounced around the room and the ceiling never looked dull and dirty again! (same color)

Be Flexible When Traveling

I've learned to be flexible when traveling by air. Flights are often overbooked and airlines will request volunteers who will give up their seat and take a later flight. By leaving some time in my schedule, my husband and I were able to score 2 free round trip tickets to anywhere in the continental US by waiting one hour for the next flight!

Advice for Choosing Patio Pavers

I need advice in deciding what kind of pavers to choose for a patio to be built in a fairly humid climate. My biggest concern is choosing pavers with the longest lifespan, with the cost being a secondary consideration. Are concrete pavers the longest lasting? Or brick? Or natural stone, or something else altogether? I'd love to have some input and any other suggestions from Thrifty Fun readers. Thank you!
