Brandy (Golden Retriever)

Brandy is 5 years old and is a Golden Retriever. We bought her as a puppy for our grandchildren. Brandy likes to fetch sticks and balls, eat, and, of course, swim in the family pool with her kids. Here is a candid adorable photo of my 3 1/2 yr old grandaughter supposedly getting herself ready for a safe dip in the pool with her dog. I guess she decided her beloved pet should be wearing the swimmies and floatation ring instead, but the bewildered and thankless look on Brandy's face seems to say "Just what part of webbed feet doesn't this kid understand?" Truly a "Golden Moment" I think for these two pals!

Nautical Wedding Rehearsal Dinner Centerpieces

These center pieces are made in a nautical look due to the wedding being held on Cape Cod, MA. Very beach and sand area. I bought white metal and glass lanterns (for the nautical look) and a candle in the center of each and with a dried flower ring around each one. I decorated the flower ring with sea shells by hot gluing them to the flowered rings. I then set the arrangement on a I inch thick solid oak round cutting board. I purposely did not attach these items to each other. This way, whoever goes home with the centerpieces can reuse the pieces individually as a good cutting board, a lantern for a patio, and a ring of flowers and shells for a candle ring. These will be perfect, as the dinner is being held at a fine restaurant overlooking the ocean.

Very easy to make and inexpensive. Everything was purchased at The Christmas Tree Shops. They cost about six dollars each and I only needed eight!

Today's Tips:

Reuse Junk Mail Envelopes

Reuse junk mail return envelopes as mailing envelopes. If envelope has a bar code at the bottom, you can run a black marker through the bar code. I always write a reminder on any box or envelope I use, such as "Go Green-Recycle" or "I recycle, do you?" If you get really irritated by all the prepaid junk mail envelopes, stick everything the company sent you in the prepaid envelope. Be sure you include your name and address section and mail it back to them at their cost! Write next to your name/address to remove you from their mailing list. Eventually they will take you off their mailing list even if you don't make a note!

Pinata Safety Tips

A pinata at a fiesta is great fun, but can be very dangerous if the hitter is still swinging when the pinata is broken and the kids rush in. I organize this activity by instructing the kids that no one can move until I blow a whistle, or yell a word really loud like "ARRIBA" meaning it's safe to run. As a teacher, I once had a child nearly stampeded to death so I now err on the side of caution. It's a good idea to have an extra bag of treats available in case some of the less aggressive kids don't get much.

Stock Up On Whole Hams After Easter

Whole Ham is on sale now here (possibly an after Easter clearance?) for only .99c a lb.! So now is the time to stock up a little bit and have the butcher quarter your whole ham. For 1/4th of it, have him slice for you, 1/4th shredded and the other 1/2 for the freezer until you are ready to make a big crock pot of ham and beans to serve with cornbread!

Hip To Be Square Meatballs

Meatballs with less effort. In today's newspaper (April 25, 2007), the Dallas Morning News ran a column titled "Double Duty Dinners", by Susan Nicholson, about making a meatloaf and, after baking, cutting it into small squares. Be sure an instant read thermometer reads 160 degrees F. This appeals to me, because I find making individual meatballs to be tedious and messy. It's called Hip-to-be-square meatballs.

Easy Homemade Guacamole

The easiest way to make guacamole is to mash ripe avocados, pitted and peeled, of course, with a potato masher to the consistency that you like. I like it a bit chunky. Add a spoonful or 2 of your favorite salsa, to taste. A squeeze of fresh lime juice is optional, but perks up the flavor. Make this the day of the fiesta.

Wintergreen, Spearmint or Pepperminte to Repel Insects

Beware of the coming seasonal flying insects that are attracted to floral and fruity scents! Be as safe as possible and invest in a bottle of Ivory Liquid dish soap and put 10-12 drops of wintergreen, spearmint or peppermint essential oil in it and shake it up! You will feel especially clean and the bugs will like you a lot less! (I use mine on my person and in my hair!)

Make Maracas For Cinco de Mayo

Having a Cinco de Mayo party? If people are bring kids, be sure to have something to do. Plan a craft like making maracas from empty water bottles. Add a few dried beans or some rice to empty, dry bottle, cap them and cover with a thin layer of paper mache' which will dry quickly in the sun, or even a layer of duct or masking tape. (Kids love tape!) Then decorate as desired with sharpie markers, stickers, beads, feathers, fringes, ribbons, or whatever. Let kids perform to a Mexican tune in a maraca band later in the evening.

Use For Empty Seed Packets

Cut the pretty pictures from packets or greeting cards, punch a hole and use a ribbon to hang and they make beautiful gift tags. You can also laminate them and make bookmarkers, coasters, placemats, many uses. Great as thank you gifts.

Buying a Bathing Suit for a Pre-Teen

I am raising my grand daughter and this season she is into Jr. sizes. I have looked and looked and CANNOT find a decent bathing suit in her size! I know it is early in the season, however, none of the places I have looked even showed a one-piece suit and all the two pieces are too skimpy for an 11 year old. What is a person to do with a child who wears an "adult" size but is still very young?

I know Speedo makes nice one-piece suits, but who can afford $60-70 for a suit for one season for a growing child? Does anyone know of a store that carries decent suits? I am not a great fan of purchasing online, especially of something as hard to fit as a bathing suit.

Thanks for any help I can get.

Fixing a Tear in an Above Ground Pool

I have an above ground pool that is almost 1 year old. The pool has been empty for about 3 weeks, my husband was cleaning it and had a bucket which he dropped and it made a tear in the bottom of the liner approximately 5 inches long. Can we use a patch repair kit or will the liner have to be replaced? I have also read about shrinking and am worried about getting it filled and then having more problems. Thanks!

Cleaning Vinyl Floor Tiles

I work in a Church and the vinyl tile floor in the parish hall and kitchen has grime that will not come up. We can use a floor scrubber for the larger areas but the corners and edges will not come clean. They have not been maintained over the years and now the dirt appears permanent. The floors are waxed so there is probably wax over the grime. We have tried to lift the grime with towels soaked in ammonia with little success. Is there any miracle product that would work?
