Penny (Dachsund), 10 years young!

Penny is a black and tan dachshund. She was the runt of her mother's second litter in August '95. We had both her mother and father and since we had to bottle feed her puppy milk we had to keep her! She enjoys walks in the local park!

The Hungry Squirrel

Not sure if this qualifies for a pet, but I feed and water them just as I do my other pets. Only problem is the squirrels get up before I do. This is what I saw out my kitchen window this morning as I was pouring my first cup of coffee. The jar has popcorn in it and I usually spread it out on the blocks, but guess he was hungry and the blocks were bare. Once I fed them, the other 10 or 12 showed up for breakfast buffet.

Always Use Seat Belts

When shopping with young children please use the seat belts and child seats in buggies. I have seen children almost fall out or climb out themselves. You know it only "takes a second" for something awful to happen.

Herbal Insect Repellent

For an herbal insect repellent, make your own by infusing a cup of basil leaves (packed) in 4 ozs. of water. Strain & add 4 ozs. of vodka. Pour the liquid into a squirt bottle & voila! There you have it! Homemade mosquito repellent.

Walgreen's Monthly Easy Saver Rebate

Walgreen Drug Stores offer a monthly easy saver rebate where you can usually get 1 -3 items free of charge after rebate. This offer is so good they usually are out of the "freebies" the first week of the month. It's best to buy during the middle of the month after they restock. They will have a small easy-saver flyer as you enter the store that features the monthly specials.

Scoop Ice Cream Ahead of Time

Ice cream is the perfect dessert for a barbecue, and easy to serve if you scoop it ahead of time and put the scoops in cupcake liners, then freeze. Pop a scoop of ice cream, or 2 into a bowl and add some sliced strawberries or peaches!

Juicy Sliced Berries

If you want juicy sliced berries, add a little sugar or corn syrup to them and let them chill in the fridge until you are ready to eat them. The sugar brings out the sweetness and the juice.

By Linda

Editor's Note: A little honey also works well for this.

Air Dry Dishes in Your Dishwasher

To lower the electric bill, use the dishwasher's own heat. When the air dry cycle starts, turn on the kitchen's vent and press 'cancel' on the dishwasher. Open the door, and let the heat out into the room. In a few seconds, the moisture and heat are sucked up into the vent and the dishes are dried without having the dishwasher unit using more energy to heat the air for the next half hour to dry the dishes.

Keep The Fan Running

I confirmed this with my heating and air conditioning company before passing it on. I have an oil furnace. Check with your own provider to confirm.

When you turn your central air on, turn the fan on to run continuously, this keeps the cool air circulating. The company said it is less stress on the motor running full time, than cutting on and off.

Give Extras from the Garden to Your Local Food Pantry

I have just discovered a gardener's greatest harvest! Our local food pantry is now set up to accept fresh fruits and vegetables all year round, which means any harvest I have that I can't use automatically has a distribution point to be taken to for the benefit of others. No gardener likes to see the bounty he can't use from his garden go to waste. My local food pantry only asks that I knock off as much loose dirt as possible along with the bugs ~ they will do the dividing, bagging, etc., and then deliver to them between 8 and 9 a.m. (distribution to recipients begins at 9 a.m.). What a joy to know that even my extra's from the garden will be put to good use!

Drink Ice Water on the Road

When you are on the road you don't have to spend a lot of money on drinks. Fast food restaurants and gas stations that have fountain drinks usually have a water dispenser. They usually only charge 10-25 cents for a big cup of ice water. If you refill your own water bottle they usually won't charge you at all.

Baby Powder for Sandy Kids

We love to visit the beach in the summer and inevitably everyone gets covered in sand. My toddler hates the feeling of having the sand rubbed/brushed off his skin (especially if the sand is really wet and hard to get off). We've found a great way to remove it: baby powder! Just sprinkle baby powder on your feet and legs and the sand will come off so easily! Both our son and the car end up dry and sand-free.

Saving on Toilet Paper

Mounting the Toilet Paper Dispenser

If you mount your toilet paper dispenser so that it is approximately four sheets of paper above the floor, some members of your family, without realizing it, will limit their paper use to that many sheets at a time.

The Number 4

One of my friends successfully used this method to save on toilet paper in their home.

They put a piece of paper with the number "4" on it where it was easily visible to the person sitting on the toilet stool.

All of the members of the family knew that it was there as a reminder to economize.

Guests didn't know what it meant, unless they happened to ask, which is what I did.

Keep Grocery Bags By Your Door

Where Can I Forward Scam Emails?

I have heard about emails from far away countries asking for help. They say if i would help them then they will give me lots of money. I have not given into the scam BUT I know there is a place to forward these scams to or something. In fact there was an expose on TV a few nights ago but I dont know the station it was on.
Please be cautious when reading these emails. They are just a way to get your money and they have no inteniton of giving you anything but heartache.

Thanks in advance,

How Do You Sew a Quilt?

I would like to sew a quilt out of my three daughters outgrown baby clothes. I have never tried to sew a quilt. I've decided to go with the basic block pattern. (not sure what to call it, but all the blocks are the same size) All the blocks are cotton type material.

Here's the hard part, I haven't sewn with a sewing machine in years and am having trouble remembering terms, can anyone help me by telling me how to sew a quilt in simple terms? For example I know I need a liner for the back of the quilt but do I stuff it with anything inside?

Help My Slow-Growing English Ivy

This will be the 3rd summer since I have planted English ivy (hedera helix) outside to climb up a 6-foot stockade fence. So far, it has only reached about halfway up this fence, and it seems to me that it should be taller at this point.

I have never pruned or cut this ivy back, and our last two summers here in PA have been very rainy. Also, this ivy is planted in a mostly sunny/partly shady location. My plants appear to be very healthy, and I know this vine is supposed to be known for its hardiness.

So, I have two questions: 1. Am I doing something wrong here? and 2. What can you suggest to speed up the growth of my English ivy vines?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Cottonmouth Snakes (Water Moccasin) in my Bathtub

I live in a small neighborhood in Southeastern Louisiana not far from the Mississippi river. This morning I was going to take my bath and I discovered (or at least my cat did) a black snake curled up by the tub. I didn't touch it!

I turned off the light and called for help. My uncle came and killed the snake which he said was a cottonmouth because it spit venom when he hit it. The snake also jumped when he hit it the first time.

I have a 8 month old baby and I am very worried that there are more snakes where this one came from. I don't know how this thing got into my bathroom or how long it had been in my house.

Should I be concered that there are more? Do they travel in packs? Do these things lay eggs or have live births? And if they do, do you think there are more in my house learking around. I can't even take a bath without looking on the floors.

I live in a house that is up off of the ground. I have never seen a snake in my neighborhood or in my yard and I have lived here for almost 31 years. If you have any advice please let me know.

Dogs Barking While In Kennel

All of you have been so helpful before, i hope you can help me again. Because of an unemployment issue, my two dogs have not been kenneled consistently since march the seventh. My husband is working now and they have to be kenneled. they tend to get into trouble when left alone. :)

My husband leaves for work at 8 a.m. I leave for work at 11 a.m. We both work until 9 or 10 p.m. He walks and feeds them before he leaves. I play with them, do housework, and walk them before O go to work. When they are kenneled, they have toys and a radio that plays soft music or the best of the 80's.

My brother stops in on his way home from work around 4 p.m. to feed them and walk them. He usually stays for about an hour. Then they are put back in their kennels. my sister who is staying with us comes home at 6 p.m., she takes care of them until we get home.

The neighbors are complaining that they bark all day while we are not home. I also have a third dog who is not kenneled because she is old enough (age 5 to be trusted, the other two have just turned two, they are full blown teenagers!). Their kennels are close enough that they see one another.

I know it is just getting them back into a routine, but, they are driving one neighbor nuts and she says she will report us. Do you have any suggestions to help us? They are anxious because they are learning a "new" routine. How can I help calm them down?

Betty

Stubborn Stains on TV Screen

I have a 46 inch big screen that we recently purchased from a newpaper ad. It has 3 stains on the bottom left side and I don't know what it is. Everything I've tried (nail polish remover, rubbing alchohol, etc) doesnt seem to work. You can feel it if you rub your finger on it but nothing comes off if you use your nails. If anyone has any ideas they'd be appreciated!

Bluish Black Flying Insects on My Roof

On the roof of my home I thought I had an infestation of bees. Upon closer examination I don't know what these insects are.

These are my observations:

They can fly
They are an inch in length
They are a bluish, black in colour
I have seen them around the roof of my house only.

This could also be helpful. My home is situated about a ten minute walk from a very large outlet of running creek water.

I really want to take care of the problem myself and not pay a pest control company to fix the problem. Does anyone know what I am dealing with?

Keeping Cats From Scratching Screen Doors

Making a "Hugger" (fitted on one end) Comforter

Does anyone know how to make a "hugger" comforter from an existing comforter? My granddaughter has recently been given bunk beds and I think it would be easier for her to make the beds if she had hugger comforters (fitted on one end). They are very expensive to buy, but it seems to be that a regular comforter could be cut down and then made to fit on one end. I just can't seem to picture how to do it...

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
