Scenery: Alaskan Rookery

This was a treat for me. I live in Missouri and am visiting my mom in Alaska. I went out on Prince William Sound and saw this "rookery" (the nesting place of birds, such as crows and rooks, the source of the term.)

The breeding grounds of colony forming seabirds and marine mammals (true seals or sea lions) and even some turtles are also referred to as rookeries.

Today's Tips:

Ease Your Christmas Grocery Budget

I start grocery boxes at the end of February for the next Christmas holidays. I keep a list of things I buy regularly, then wait until they are on a super sale and stock up on them. I start with non-food articles like cleaning supplies, then start stocking up on things we use everyday, like our childrens' aspirins, razors, toilet tissue, etc. Later in the summer I start purchasing canned goods, salad dressings, etc.

In November, I start picking up party crackers, peanuts, even dog food. When it comes time to buy the Christmas goodies, the grocery money is freed up for treats and all the extras. The surplus groceries usually last until the end of January at least, giving me a break in the budget.

I started doing this several years ago, and couldn't believe how much it eased the Christmas spending. Just make sure to check the "best by" dates.

Buy Dog Toys at the Thrift Store

We have two lagre breed dogs (American Bulldogs) that can destroy just about any toy they get. They especially love stuffed animals. But, most of the ones designed for dogs are pricey and don't last with these two. (There is one that resembles a rag doll but designed to look like a cat, snake, etc. that is good.)

My daughter discovered that she can get stuffed animals CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP (usually $.99 for a medium sized toy) at Goodwill stores. We just make sure they aren't filled with beads, etc. and when we get them home, we remove the tags, plus any hard plastic parts. I usually wash them first, even though they look clean. Then we give them to the dogs and stand back and watch the fun. (Plus, it's always best to supervise your pets when they play with certain toys.) They have so much fun.

Tips for Kids at Summertime

Here are some things kids can do over summer.

  • Plan ahead and stick to a schedule.
  • Make flower beds, rock beds or hanging gardens.
  • Make pet rocks.
  • Have a garage sale and let kids make the signs.
  • Write down some good ideas and pick from a hat, like movies.
  • Enjoy events in your local community.
The possibilities are endless, be sure to ask the kids what they would like to do.

Cleaning Silver With Products at Home

Years ago I was lured into buying one of those "but wait" products that miraculously cleaned tarnished silver. I had mediocre results and had to buy a certain detergent and something else to mix with it. In essence, I got a sheet of tin with some holes in it and instructions on how to use it.

I found several suggestions saying to use baking soda and tin foil in some manner to remove tarnish. I was cleaning some old silver trays that had been in storage for a very long time, so I needed a big container that could hold boiling water to place the items in. I have a stainless steel sink, so I put the stopper in, covered the bottom with aluminum foil, placed one tray in, put in a couple of tablespoons of baking soda on top, then covered it all with boiling water.

After cleaning a couple of pieces, I thought of adding a second sheet of tin foil on top of the piece and it seemed to be an even more efficient way of tackling this task. The secret is that the foil must touch the piece in some way. I let it sit in the solution for about a half hour.

To my amazement, when I rubbed my finger around the edge of the tray, my finger was black from the tarnish that had been brought out of the tray. The sheets of foil, through some chemical reaction, had absorbed the tarnish and were dark with the collection of it. After removing most of the tarnish this way, I used my silver polish to shine it up and protect it. No more of those "but wait" pieces of tin and buying special detergents etc.

Save Money on Insurance

If you own a home or buying a home try to get your vehicle and home insurance with the same company and get a discounted rate for doing so. We not only checked with local agents, but also did online rate checks.

We have been a member of AARP since we were 50 years old and after reading yet another ad in the AARP magazine and getting the best quote online we decided to call them to see what the final rate would be. We found that we saved over $200.00 on the auto insurance and over $300.00 on the home insurance. The company is Hartford. We actually have better coverage for the vehicles and our home so we were pleased.

You don't have to be a member of AARP to be covered with Hartford, but it gives you additional discount for being a memeber plus other discounts. I guess it helped that we had good driving records and just minor accident in 25 year period. The quotes are free and you can find toll free numbers to call for it so if you are getting quotes get one from them. I had more problems getting to see our local agent than calling and talking to a rep of Hartford so don't be afraid to try this.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A sixth grade class is doing some spelling drills. The teacher asks Tommy if he can spell 'before.'

He stands up and says, "Before, B-E-P-H-O-R."

The teacher says, "No, that's wrong. Can anyone else spell before?"

Another little boy stands up and says, "Before, B-E-F-O-O-R."

Again the teacher says, "No, that's wrong."

The teacher asks, "Little Johnny, can you spell 'before'?" Little Johnny stands up and says,

"Before, B-E-F-O-R-E."

"Excellent Johnny, now can you use it in a sentence?"

Little Johnny says, "That's easy. Two plus two be fore."

Cabinet Hardware Advice

My new house has what I believe is Ginger Maple kitchen cabinets. My appliances are black with a tiny bit of stainless. I have a beige sink with a chrome faucet, with a hint of gold mixed in. My walls are white. I want to update my cabinet hardware which is now cheap looking goldtone. I can't picture black or stainless, but I am leaning towards stainless. Does anyone out there have an opinion about how a maple cabinet would look with stainless hardware? Thanks.
