The Lilies on My Patio

I don't have any tip to share but I am so proud of my garden/patio this year... I just had to share this with you. I don't have much space so I'm a container gardener. Two days ago I woke up and found that my lilies were opening. Aren't they beautiful?

Lola (Boxer)

Lola is our 4 year old Boxer. She was rescued from a single mom who could not take care of her and her two kids after the husband left her. Lola was in a kennel all day and then most of the evening because she was so "FULL OF ENERGY!" Now she is still full of energy, but she has lots of room to run and play all day and all night!

She likes to carry a shoe in her mouth and kick a wiffle ball around the house. Seriously, she does this all by herself!

She is the most wonderful dog in the world. Kind, gentle, fun-loving and full of life. She is wonderful with our 18 month old, too!

Cleaning Peanut Butter Jars

Having moved down from the White Mountains to 'urban' NY life, I find myself frustrated with the many recycling rules. (Yes, I am a good citizen and always attempt to reuse or recycle)!

One particularly frustrating "cleaning before recycling" ordeal was a sticky peanut butter jar. I'm sure you know what I mean!

Simple solution: vinegar in hot water. I use about 1/4 cup and that seems quite sufficient. I simply let it set for an hour or so, shaking occasionally (while passing thru!). And presto, open the lid and the greasy peanut butter is floating freely in the solution!

Here's to our friend, vinegar!

Potatoes for the Grill

Ingredients and Directions

Place a nice, long (at least 2 feet) of HEAVY DUTY foil on a flat space and spray liberally with no-stick spray.

Slice several Russet potatoes and a couple of nice cooking onions and mix together with hands.

  • Sprinkle with olive oil
  • dot with butter
  • add shredded Cojak or other nice melting cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste

Mix again with hands.

Fold foil together and roll a couple of times to make a seam on top, and seal ends securely. Poke a few holes on top of the package with a sharp knife.

Place package over coals, turning every 15 minutes or so, for about an hour on a covered charcoal grill.

Test for doneness by poking a sharp knife into the potatoes, through the top of foil. DO NOT puncture the bottom of the foil.

I am trying a variation of this recipe tonight because I want to try my fresh rosemary!

Variation - Italian Grill Potatoes

  • quarter several red skinned potatoes
  • peel and add several fresh pearl onions
  • add 2-3 Tablespoons fresh rosemary
  • sprinkle liberally with:
  • olive oil
  • parmesan cheese
  • shredded mozzarella
  • salt and pepper

Grill the same as above.

Saving on Professional Services from Schools

Just got a great haircut at the Vidal Sassoon Academy for $20! (As they say, a $75-$100 value) - by an experienced cutter there to hone her skills. You can get great deals at all kinds of schools. I have had dental work at a dental school and gotten my teeth cleaned at a collegiate hygiene program. Inexpensive and what's more they do it by the book with professional supervision! (Only drawback - it takes TIME - you can't rush in and out.)

Cutting Down Your Freezer's Energy Consumption

This tip requires that the user collect a few gallon and half gallon milk or juice containers.

If you have a chest freezer, fill a few gallon containers with water and freeze them. Make space in your freezer and pack it to the capacity with the ice/the gallon container. This way you can turn your freezer off for 10-18 hours. If you re-inforce the insulation, you can be sure of one advantage: intact groceries at a lower energy bill.

If you can place the frozen gallon containers upright, with caps on, you can rest assured that there will be no water to remove from the freezer! I cut my energy bill by $5 - 8.00 month this way. You might have a freezer, but remember that you do NOT have to:

  1. Use it all the time. If you dont have much in there, just empty it out and turn it off.

  2. Leave it turned on 365 days a year even if you have stuff in there.

June was Dairy month. Chances are that your freezer is packed to the capacity. After a few weeks, your stockpiles might dwindle. This would be the time to use ice: big savings in your energy bill.

Also, did you know that a freezer packed to its capacity can be turned off for one hour without much damage? Of course, all this will be directly proportional to its volume. The larger the freezer, the longer it will take to gain heat. Simple Physics.

Just invest in a good thermometer and see how long your freezer will retain the low temperatures after you have pulled the plug. (The same worked for a friend's fridge. I never had the guts to turn off my fridge.)

Happy savings.

Cooking Roast on the Grill

When it is extremely hot, I cook a pork or beef roast on my charcoal grill. You do this by using some heavy duty foil. Sprinkle meat tenderizer (inexpensive is best!) on the meat and wrap in foil making a packet. Then place on the grill and let cook. It usually takes anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. My family loves it and the meat is usually falling apart.

Make Your Own Hummingbird Food

If you are like we are, we have several hummingbird feeders around our yard. Yes, you can buy the hummingbird food but this get costly an there is not much in the packages. I labeled a pitcher to keep in the refrigerator with "homemade hummingbird food" This is so much cheaper then the boughten kind.

Bring 4 cups water to a boil and stir in 1 cup sugar. Stir to dissolve. When cool, pour into the pitcher and refrigerate until needed. As I refill the feeders, I make another batch for the next time. You do not need to add food coloring. In fact, I understand it is not good for the little hummingbirds.

Vegetable Soup Too Salty

It seems I have made a batch of vegetable soup too salty. I know there is a fix out there somewhere, can someone help? I would prefer not to do the "cook a potato in it", I don't want to further cook the veggies and make them mushy, if I could try something else.

Thank you!

Uses for Plastic Bowls from Frozen Meals

I sometimes buy the frozen meals that come in the black plastic bowls e.g. Lean Cuisine, Weight Watchers, etc. I keep some of them to put other portions of meals in to freeze and would like to know if anyone has come up with ideas for any other uses for the bowls. I don't really like putting them into the rubbish.

When Are Figs Ripe?

I have a fig tree that I planted 3 summers ago. It has grown well and is now about 7 feet tall. We have let 4 main shoots remain and cut back the others. We bought it at a flea market and I do not know what kind of fig it is. Last year, it had a few figs on it, but they never developed and ripened. It is currently loaded with fruit, but I don't know when they should ripen. As the tree grows, new fruit is appearing, but all are still green and hard. When can I expect ripe figs?

Legitimate Work at Home Jobs

I would like to know if there are any legit websites out there to find a work at home job? I am interested in typing, data entry, that type of stuff, I also have some Medical Terminology knowledge, as I was trying to get into the Medical Transcription field. I was an administrative assistant for over 10 years before I came home to take care of my children. I know that there are many requests on this type of stuff already out there, I have just exhausted all of my resources at the present time.

I have been researching off and on for about 4 years now and most everything I find is not legit, or you have to pay for it first, I don't think so! I don't have the money to invest in a lot of things and then lose it.

I have young children in school and would like to find something I could do from home on school days, so that I don't have to get a babysitter. I also know of other people at home with small children that could benefit from working at home, so any information, suggestions that anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your newsletter and resources, I really enjoy reading them and learning about all different types of stuff.

Freezing Field Peas (Black-Eyed Peas)
By Ellen Brown

Selecting High-Quality Field Peas:

Field peas are called by many names, including southern peas, cowpeas, field peas, crowder peas, and black-eyed peas. For freezing, select well-filled flexible pods with tender seeds. Peas should be harvested as quickly as possible when pods are full or they will lose their sweet flavor.
