Daylight Saving Time - Fall Back This Sunday

It's time to change our clocks back one hour on Sunday, November 4, 2007. This is for the US, the European Union's Summer Time changed last week. It may take some by surprise because it is later than in previous years. Clocks should be moved ahead Sunday morning at 2 AM, making it now 1 AM.

Some computer clocks may have trouble with this, check with your computer manufacturer to get a patch or a fix, if necessary.

Enjoy your extra hour this Sunday. Take this opportunity to check your smoke alarm batteries as well.

Comet Holmes Now Visible

Just want to tell everybody, for the next 2 weeks you can see a comet in the sky. Look to the northeast. If you have a clear horizon, you can see it around 8:00 ET. If not, you'll have to wait until 9 or 10. It will be visible all night.

To the naked eye or binoculars, it will look like a big, white fuzzy ball. Through a telescope, it is spectacular! Comets are very unpredictable, they can suddenly dim, even dim to the point that they are no longer visible, so get a look while you can!

Joan from Chesapeake

Editor's Note: This is Comet Holmes. Here is a link to a website that has more information, if you are interested.

Emory Board To Remove Crayon From Microsuede

My two year old daughter decided to add some color to our new microsuede couch using various colors of crayon, I found if you use a very fine emory board (nail file) it takes the crayon right off, just go over the markings lightly until it's gone. Fine sand paper may work also, I would test it first in a small area.

Organize College Subjects In Separate Drawers

A helpful hint to help a college student keep from getting buried: get a 5 drawer rolling file cabinet. 1 drawer per subject, easy get at and keeps subjects separated. It's helped with my daughter. Before this, all would get thrown onto the bed or a chair. The next time something was needed, she'd be searching frantically for it. Now she just opens the drawer and places it into her bag.

Use Mop And Glo To Shine Your Old Car

First of all, do not try this on any car that you care about! I had an old, old Toyota and the paint was very dull and had lost it's shine. I tried something very simple to renew the shine. I used Mop and Glo on it and, wow, what a shine. I know my neighbors thought I was crazy, but it worked and looked good.

Clever Duvet From Sheets

Old comforter worn and faded? Buy 2 flat sheets to match your decor and the size of your bed. Sew the sides and bottom to match the size of your comforter. Double stitch it and it won't come apart. Leave it long enough to tuck under mattress. I used two separate plain colors and just turn over when I need a change. Easy to launder and it keeps the comforter clean. Using holiday themes can make a good gift for that special person.

Store Chains In A Ziplock Bag

I asked a clerk at a jewelry store. She said to clasp it, then put the necklace in a tiny zip lock bag with only the clasp part poking out. Close the zip seal. That's what they do.

Indoor Lighted Greenhouse For Winter Months

When the winter months enable us to do our gardening outside, I decided to bring much of my garden inside. We cleaned out under our basement steps. Insulated the outside walls. Then many small florescent lights up.We staggered the size of the new shelves, lining the bottoms with heavy duty foil. Using a long surge protector for the electric, just a simple switch on in the am. and off in the pm. My plants are as happy as outside. It's a great way to start new seeds for the forthcoming spring as well.I so love to go down there and see my winter garden flowers. It's great therapy for the mind and soul.

Preparing Perennials For Fall

I now live where my perennials do well all winter and do not need much special preparation in the fall. When I lived in a colder clime, I found that they would come back the next spring if I took certain steps. I always made sure the flowers were removed before the first frost. Many did not make it if the frost got them while there were flowers on the plant. At the same time, I would remove most of the above ground plant. This varies by species, but many need to be hard pruned to endure cold winters. I like to put pine straw or other type of mulch to prevent the frost from freezing the roots. Most of them would survive given this kind of treatment.

Coffee Filters as Cake Pan Liners

Instead of preparing a baking pan in the standard way, oil as usual and press a coffee filter into the bottom of the pan. When your cake is done, all you'll have to do is loosen the edge with a knife, invert a plate over the bottom of the pan, turn the whole thing upside down (plate beneath cake pan) and lift the cakepan off. The coffee filter will have absorbed the extra oil, and will peel right off your cake : )

Does anyone have knowledge or experience regarding the Mitsubishi Mr. Slim heating/air conditioning system? Would appreciate any info. Thanks so much.

Getting Rid of Corn Bugs

I'm hoping somebody can help me with this problem. I have ladybugs or corn bugs(they have a yellow back to them and bite!) that come in my apt every fall. I've asked my landlord what I can use and they have suggested that I suck them in the vacuum cleaner and put them in a bag and throw away in the trash. I've also used bugspray that works sometimes but this has become a nightly event. The screens aren't good quality either, I might add! Does anybody have any ideas that I might be able to try and if they work I can pass them on to other residents as well? Thanks a million!
