Daily Thrifty Tips - January 22, 2009

Vol. 8, Num. 15, January 22, 2009 (Read It Online)

You probably have heard in the news, that the peanut butter products affected by Salmonella contamination continues to expand. Here's a quote from a recent press conference with the FDA about this issue:

"Due to this wide spread distribution pattern we currently have more than 125 recalled products listed on the FDA Website, and we expect that number to continue to increase as we continue to get new product specific information.

In order to make it easy for consumers to determine if any of the peanut butter containing products they have at home are subject to recall, FDA has created and posted on our Website a searchable database consumers can check for frequent updates."

This started out as a recall of just peanut butter sent to restaurants and since has been expanded to include tons of products that might be in our pantries, even some products for pets. At this point, I would return any product purchased recently that contains peanut butter. Why risk it? If the product list is expected to expand, who can say what products it will include tomorrow? Why wait for updates to find out that the cracker you at yesterday may have contained Salmanella? Better safe than sorry.

You can find a general overview of this recall here:

http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf71034034.tip.html

It includes a link to the FDA's searchable database of currently recalled products.

Fuzzy (Domestic Shorthair)

Fuzzy is a 4 year old domestic shorthair cat. We adopted Fuzzy from a local rescue along with his brother, Pinky in February of 2007.

Fuzzy really does not play at all - he just likes bed time! Every time he thinks it's bed time, he'll just hop up on the bed, lay down, and look at you with these big wide eyes. He's such a cuddle monster! Unlike his brother, Pinky, he's not a lap cat at all, he just likes to lay beside you and get loved on!

Make Gift "Baskets" in Useful Storage Containers

Reading all of these tips made me remember what I packaged up last year. Sorry, no photos, so you will have to use your imagination!

I hate Easter basket type gifts! This might sound harsh but what I really hate is the basket that these gifts come in. What do you do with them after the gift is gone? The real answer is that unless it is not a true wicker Easter basket, one usually tosses them or donates them to get rid of them. So with this in mind, I did not want to subject others to my strong aversion to wicker Easter baskets when (as a mother of 3) I am giving out thank you/acknowledgment gifts during the holidays to: teachers, neighbors, principals, best friends and casual friends, managers and the like. I created gift baskets in storage containers with the thought in mind, who would not want a (new not used) food storage container?

During the holidays, our local drugstore was selling food storage jars. Some had a plastic over the mouth seal as a bonus food sealer and some did not. I bought one selling for about $2 each that was a square shape and the size was about 6 inches tall, I believe it was measured in ounces. I got the 32 oz. one. Some things were bought in bulk or multi-serve packaging, keeping the cost low

Ingredients

This is the list that I compiled to create a jar that cost about $10 each:

  1. small flower magnet picture frame
  2. single serve apple sauce
  3. single serve package of nuts
  4. a small box of raisins
  5. a small pack of post-its
  6. a pen
  7. single serve coffee packet
  8. single serve hot coco packet
  9. single serve tea packet
  10. single serve drink mix packet
There might have been more things but as you can see from the list and by using your imagination, my goal was to create a small food snack jar so that the person I was giving it to would have something besides Christmas candy to snack on while sitting at their desk.

Directions

Stuff the jar, putting a scattering of M&M's to fill in the cracks of the other items.

Place seal over mouth of jar with the self sticking plastic seal for the mouth of the jar. A lot of the people I gave them to thought that they were bought at a store that way and some even came to me asking what store I bought them from.

Place stickers around jar. After stuffing the jar, the next step was to get some festive Christmas stickers (not the tacky ones but the ones that looked more classy) and put a few on the lid and some around the jar.

Wrap ribbon with name card and candy cane around jar and hand out to people for Christmas.

I suggest keeping a list of all that was stuffed in jar because this year I did the same type of packaging but I had forgotten what I had put in the jar last year so I might have duplicated some items.

Several of the people that I had given these type of gift baskets to were very thankful to have something other than Christmas calorie punching food to snack on and a jar to keep all the goodies in while taking the time to snack on them (Hawaii has a terrible bug problem).

It also made me feel good not to inflict others with my aversion to wicker Easter/gift baskets.

Set Up a Kids Christmas Tree

As empty nesters with a house emptied out, I decided to do something new this Christmas. Having just given our sun room a make-over, into a den just for us, I thought of putting up 2 trees, as each had access to a big window and these are the two rooms we spend our time in (living and den). The living room tree is more traditional, and little people digging under it was always a harrowing experience!

No one loves their grandchildren more than I; I decided to put the other tree in the den, and decorate it with whatever came to mind; toys, homemade decorations, things I dug out of my craft basket; a Dollarama Santa on top; even the little tin watering cans looked great, and anything else anyone, large or small cared to put on it! With all the kids and grandkids gifts under it, it looked inviting, and gave them a place to play safely as well! I decorated the room with a few musical decorations, and we put animated srceensavers on our desktops, to top it off; a box of candy canes on the tree and we were good to go!

Use Olive Oil to Massage Babies

I took an Infant Massage Class when my son was born and the instructor had us use regular olive oil to massage our babies. It is cheaper than massage oil for babies. It is non-toxic according to our instructor and all natural. The only draw back is the smell! Infant massage is wonderful and I encourage anyone to take a class. Our hospital offered it free to new Mom's.

Ask for the Discount

When I was recently shopping at a well known kitchen ware shop, I found the grater I wanted with a slightly bent handle. At the checkout, I asked for the item to be discounted because of the handle, and it was the only one. 10% was taken off the whole price.

I do this on a regular basis especially if the item is the last one or there is any visible damage. This is especially applicable if you are paying cash. Always be extremely polite, remember they are doing you a favor. You'll be surprised who will discount. My son who is in the military always asks for the military discount and he gets it. Don't be afraid to ask for the discount.

Share Seeds With Your Friends

It is mid January and already the seed catalogs are coming in the mail, the packages of seeds are in the store and anxiety begins of what are we going to plant. Sometimes when wanting to try something different, I know my little spots of trial produce won't use up the whole packet. OR when I am trying a variety of a plant and there are 9 seedlings to the pack. I buy what I want and then share with a variety of my friends. Between about 4 of us, there would be someone willing to take the extra seeds or seedlings. It is one way to try something new and not waste anything.

I keep the packet jacket with the info on it, staple or paste it to recycling paper from my basket, put the into into a notebook with sleeves for reference. If you have time, draw an outline of your gardens and make note of what seed went where. Tuck it in the front of the book. At the end of the growing season, evaluate the product you used. If you liked it, make sure it is on the list for the next year. If you don't want to plant as much, write down whom you shared the seeds/plants with.

I am so fortunate to have smart gardening friends who share their produce, plants, flowers, seeds, etc with each other. When I thin out abundant flowering plants, I know which neighbors need to add them. We work well recycling our gardens through many households.

Use a Well Organized List When Grocery Shopping

When shopping for groceries and household supplies, having a well organized list is one of the best money savers (and time savers) that we've tried. I've developed my own shopping list and included prices of items, so that I know when a sale item found is REALLY a good deal. It's very surprising how great a difference in prices items are from month to month, too.

I've organized my own list for shopping at Walmart, so mine starts with pharmacy area items like vitamins that we buy on a monthly basis, then goes to canned and dry goods, then I make a sweep back to frozen and refrigerated goods so they'll be at their coldest for the trip home. We usually shop for our main groceries only once a month, then shop only for a few items weekly at other stores and mainly just stock up on their great weekly sale items.

Since my main list is mostly for items we cook a lot, it wouldn't be right for most people, but I found a web site called freeprintablegrocerylist.com that has several versions of a list most people could use and update to suit themselves. Just scroll down the page a little and you'll see the different versions and can print your own, or at least use it as an idea on how to make your own list to save and print out each month or each week. It's helped us so very much, and we've been able to save enough this way to stock up on various items to have when it's really needed.

For example, one month our water heater had to be replaced, and used up our whole monthly grocery budget plus some on buying a new one, but we had plenty of food to get us through that month so we could pay for the water heater front and not owe. If you've not tried it, try it for just two or three months and you'll probably never go back to big weekly shopping trips. It stopped us from losing so much money on impulse items, and now we actually have more money in the budget for when we need it.

Source: I thought up my own main list myself when I was in chemo and only felt like shopping maybe once a month, and really needed to watch out for prices...but the website I've given was suggested in a newsletter by S.C.Johnson, I think.

Homemade Instant Oatmeal

With my husband having experienced a recent lay-off and my kids liking instant oatmeal, I have discovered how to make it on my own.

Please note, this doesn't make a lot, I just put it together this morning and stored it in a mason jar.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of powdered milk
  • 3-4 cups oatmeal, rolled kind
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar

Directions

Grind up the oatmeal. Combine the oatmeal, sugar, powdered milk and mix well, and you are done. I add jelly, perserves, peanut butter, spices, etc to flavor it. Add hot water and mix. Be careful, it will look thin at first, but as you mix it gets thicker. Add milk or water to thin out to preferred consistency.

I figure it's about 1 Tbsp. for a package of the instant stuff.

Enjoy.

Source: This was my own discovery since we have to cut back in our spending. I keep the rolled oats and powder milk in my house for cooking.

Recipes for "Food Fest" Fundraiser

I'm involved with the Drug-Free Scholarship Foundation and every year we have a fund-raiser called "Food Fest". We have foods from around the world and people pay to sample them. My problem? Some of the vendors have not been able to come this year, so we have many extra spots to fill.

I have a source of chicken, so if anyone has a chicken recipe that's not too hard to fix, please send it to me. We're especially low in German and Irish dishes, but any country would be great. I was thinking about Jamaican Sticky Chicken and Transylvania Chicken Stew. More ideas? Thanks.

Tax Forms Show Different Refund Amounts

On 1/17/09 I e-filed my Federal taxes with one site (turbotax). Early this morning 1/18/09 I logged into another site that offered free state filing. Keep in mind it was 3am, so 1/2 way through I realize it's a Federal form. The issue: the 2nd form offers $500 more than the one previously e-filed (yes, same exact info: deductions, wages etc.) I have not submitted the 2nd form, but any thoughts as to how I get the additional refund money? Thanks in advance!

Butter vs. Margarine: You Decide
By Debra Frick

Well, I am getting up there in years and my husband and I both are a little over weight. Seeking advice from our doctor we were told that we like thousands of other Americans, we needed to start eating more heart healthy food and switch our fat intakes. Less fried food, more fresh salads and to buy natural products where we could. I asked my doctor about "Butter vs. Margarine" and was told that, believe it or not, butter being a natural product was probably better for our bodies.
