Tea With Me - Toy Travel Tea Set

Cindy Bailey

This tiny tea set-to-go should delight the little traveler on the plane or in the car. Similar ready made sets sell for as much as $16, but we picked up the tea set and dolls at the dollar store.

Age: 4 and up
Time To Make: 1-2 hours
Cost: $5-7 or less

Materials:

  • small cardboard suitcase*
  • fabric scraps
  • scrap of quilt batting
  • elastic
  • 1 glass tea set
  • 1 or 2 tiny porcelain dolls**
  • 1 tiny bear, optional**
  • 1 mini photo album
  • trims, such as tiny roses, lace, ribbon, etc.
  • hot glue or tacky glue

Instructions:

  1. Measure fabric and batting to fit lid.
  2. Cut section of elastic for lid. You will need to tack it in place at the appropriate points so it will hold the photo album and plates as shown.
  3. Attach batting and then fabric with hot glue.
  4. Repeat with fabric and batting for bottom of case.
  5. Using matching fabric, fashion a "dress" for the bear as shown.
  6. Measure three more sections of elastic and then glue into place for dolls and bear.
  7. To make purse for extra dishes, sew up both long sides and one short side of a 4 x 6-inch piece of fabric. Sew raw edge of flap at the opening, fold over purse and press. Attach ribbon strap and use Velcro to fasten. Add lace and rose trims.

  9. Print out mini photos for album on the computer. Type "Tea with Me" to place in the window (if there is one) along with the child's photo. Include photos of family far away.
  10. You could also make up a story or rhyme and put the words opposite the photos.

*You may also use a small basket with a handle and a lid.

**Raid the bottom of your child's toy box or maybe the thrift store for dolls and bear.
