To make "yo yo's", I cut out a 4 inch circle of fabric and did a running stitch just inside the edge on the wrong side of the circle (knot the end first).
Pull the thread to make a yo yo and add a stitch or two to hold in place. Put the button tack through the center and voila! You are done.
