Craft Project: Milkweed Ornaments (Santa Pods)

This one is easy enough for kids. It's cheap and quick so kids in Scouts or groups can make several for gifts. I wrapped mine, using red and white tulle which comes on a roll. I closed the ends with tinsel pipe cleaners and added beads on the end. You could use curling ribbon, too, but the pipe cleaners are faster. Makes a nice presentation and the person can see your project if they don't feel like opening it this minute.

Henry (Basset/Pointer)

Henry is 8 and is a Basset/Pointer mix. We had lost our Chihuahua to heart failure, and I was just looking at adoption sites, pining for my "Razz". I saw Henry's pic on find a pet; I thought it was cute the way they described him (mom was a basset, dad was a traveling salesman), and he was a little funny-looking, a freckled basset. Bf wanted to go look at him, and we wound up adopting him Dec '05

He's all hound, so it's either nose straight to the ground and track, or do his best to grab at the squirrels in the yard..He's also a major lover of car rides, and hasn't met an "indestructible" toy he can't destroy, yet!

My bf bought a toy poodle for me as a Valentine's gift 1 1/2 yrs ago. We were kind of worried about him taking to her, since he's on the jealous side. We brought this puff of fur in, introduced them, and within half an hour she was climbing all over him, him with a look like "the things I put with" on his face. She bonded with him, now she thinks she's a hound, lol When she goes outside, she runs to get him, like he has to go with her. You can also set your clock by Henry, if he's outside; He howls with the noon and 6pm whistle, which Buffy the poodle tries to do, too, sometimes. Poodles are NOT meant to howl LOL

Garden: Growing Melons In A Small Space

Growing Melons and other vegetables in a small space. In the foreground is where I grow cucumbers on the twine trellis and to the right further back is where I grow melons on a twine trellis. The box on the right is for garlic, on the left tomatoes and peppers. A little beans and carrots grow with the cucumbers. Crop rotation is important. When the melons get over 3 inches, I put mesh around them and us hooks to hang them from.

Today's Tips:

Warming Yourself Up

Feeling kind of cold? Here is a tip to help you warm up without turning the thermostat up. Use your hair dryer. You can point it at the place where you feel the coldest. I warm up the back of my neck at the hairline, warms me right up. Another way is to take a 24 ounce plastic pop bottle and fill it with hot water then place it under your arm or hold it on the back of your neck. That really hits the spot. :-)

Family Vintage Photo Gift Idea

This is an inexpensive gift idea. I found a vintage photograph of a great-great-great aunt of my husband's riding a bull. It was too fabulous to do nothing with so I scanned it, made prints (about 18 cents each), and glued the photo to the front of blank note cards I got at a craft store (big pack of maybe 48, including envelopes, for about $5 with a coupon). I made sets of 12, tied them together with a pretty ribbon, and gave to people in my husband's family. They loved them!

Use Lavender Oil to Repel Mosquitoes

I reside in Naples, Florida where we have many mosquitoes in the summer, during rainy season. I went to the local flea market and bought a $1 bottle of Lavender oil. I have found that putting a few drops on my wrists, neck, ankles, behind the knees keeps the mosquitoes away. I actually see the pesky insects flying around my legs, but they do not land and bite! I have been using this remedy for years and told all my friends, who also use it.

Use Prescription Bottles for Storing Quarters

I take several Rx every month and I accumulate lots of empty bottles. Someone posted that these make nice places to hold screws, nails, etc. But what I use them for is storing my State quarters. Each bottle holds $10 worth of quarters.

What makes this a frugal thing is that fact that these can be grabbed for a quick last minute birthday gift. Take of the labels and if you desire you can decorate with contact type paper. College kids love getting quarters and so do younger kids.

I also know of a place that does take the empty bottles to recycle to other nations. I have a bag full waiting to take. I think in my area this place only takes the bottles once a month on a specific day.

Be a Good Sport When Buying for Yankee Swaps

Just a reminder about Yankee Swaps, Dirty Santas, Chinese Christmases, etc., those gift exchanges where someone opens a present, the next person opens another gift and can trade gifts with the first person, a third contestant opens a gift and can trade with either of the first two players, on and on.

Many people think these are loads of fun and everyone enjoys them heartily. Obviously, they've never been the one stuck with a used competition Frisbee or a 20-year-old device that helps meat thaw faster. I have, every time, but I've hidden my frustration well - while my gift was one of the hotly traded ones. There's gonna be some clinkers in the exchange, and somebody somewhere's gonna get stuck with the Dollar Tree faux-Nerf football - and it's usually the person who provided that really nice wine glass set. Not much anyone can do about it, but encourage your 'contestants' to give something nice, not something they grabbed out of the cellar on the way to the party.

I am grateful for any gift I'm lucky enough to get, but it's gotten so I cringe whenever I hear the 'lets do the swap thing again this year!" and try to avoid it while enjoying everything else. Dropping stuff off at Goodwill on the way home from the party is kind of a downer...

Refill Snack Fruit Cups

I am a mom of four and a very frugal. If I buy applesauce cups for the kids, I don't throw them away. I wash them and make my own fruit cups to pack in their lunch. I cover the tops with Press 'n Seal. I buy the big cans of fruit (peaches, pineapple, fruit cocktail) from Sam's or Costco and can make many fruit cups much cheaper than paying over $2 for 4 cups.

Raking Leaves on Acreage

DON'T DO IT BY HAND! If you have large acreage and/or lots of deciduous trees, better to use a lawn vacuum. I bought a used one (it's all steel, so I recycled, in a sense: when is the last time you saw one of those tow-behind-your-garden tractor vacuums made of steel?) about 30 years old.

It has a 5 horsepower engine, and uses the mower discharge via a large hose. The 5 horse engine provides the vacuum and simultaneously chops up the leaves to make a finely cut mulch. We deposit this directly onto the garden, and the rest is deposited onto our tillable acreage. It saves soooo much time, and you don't get blisters. I've seen new versions of this that are collapsible and lightweight, and cost around $1,000.

If you have large acreage, you probably have a lawn or garden tractor that will tow this attachment easily. Get one if you don't currently own one! No, I do not have a farm equipment business!

Getting More POP Out of Your Popcorn

You don't have to buy gourmet popcorn.

When making popcorn, I have found it is better not to heat the oil on a high heat at first. I know this may sound stupid, but the kernels get more more heat distribution if you start out slow. (Think: You don't cook prime rib steak on blazing heat from the get go; you'll end up burning parts and other parts will be undercooked.) After hearing the first few kernels pop, turn up the heat. Cook as normal.

I think you will find less kernels than before. I have and I buy store brand. My friends wonder why there are so little kernels left. They think I have used gourmet popcorn like ORVILLE REDENBACHER. HA. HA. HA.

It's like my grandma letting the city cousins think they were drinking delivered milk when all she was doing was putting the family cow's milk in a bottle she found!

By the way, I don't ever use a popcorn machine.

Turn Lawn Into Garden With Plastic

We made a 30x20 foot garden in our back yard with plastic and cement blocks. You do not have to remove grass. Put down plastic or a thick layer of news papers, and place cement blocks on top around the edge of the space. Then, fill it with compost or manure. You have a garden without weeds or grass for years. Add more compost as needed every year. I get manure from Lowe's in 40 pound bags, I have a garden all the year, I also make flower beds the same way.

Free Whopper at Burger King

Burger King has an 800 number on the back of their receipts to call in to answer survey questions. After you do so, you will be given a code number to write onto the back of that receipt. You can turn that receipt in for a free whopper or original chicken sandwich and you do not have to order anything to get your choice or pay any taxes.

You will even get another receipt to use for the same thing. They always have this promotion, it never ends. So take advantage of it. The survey questions only take a moment and you get a $2 free meal item to enjoy. They do not expire, so save your receipts.

Save Egg Shells in Cartons for Planting Next Spring

When using eggs in my cooking, I try to break the shells near one end. The smaller piece of broken shell goes into the compost bowl, the larger part of the shell I put back into the empty egg carton and save for spring when I fill the shells with soil and start my seedlings in them. They are lightweight and easy to move around. When the plants have developed roots and are ready to transplant into the ground you just lift them shell and all and plant them in the garden. The egg shell will fertilize and nourish the plant. It will be off to a good start!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

At our adult Sunday-school class, the teacher asked us to think of everyday ways in which we could practice our religion. The topic of driving courtesy came up first. "How do you respond to the driver who rudely cuts you off?" the teacher asked.

A woman piped up, "Smash her other fender too?"
