Toby (Bichon Frise)

Toby is 2 years old and is a registered Bichon Frise. I bought him from a breeder when he was 8 weeks old.

Toby likes to put his feet on my keyboard and try to type when I am on my laptop. If he thinks I am leaving the house he will find something like a piece of trash and put it in my shoe. I guess he wants me to remember him. I have taught him to wink at me with one eye. That is just too cute!

Vincent Van Goat (La Mancha)

Vincent Van Goat is approximately 1 year old. He is a La Mancha (earless breed) goat. We rescued him from an animal shelter when he was a baby.

He likes to sneak into the tackroom and eat cat food. He's a delightful creature with a wonderful sense of humor!

Recovering Sandals With Suede Fabric

I have a pair of sandals that I got about 2 years ago at the thrift store. I wore them so much, they got pretty ratty on the part where you put your foot in and the foam part of the padding started coming up. They were just not a pretty sight while off, but they are still ok on. Believe it or not, I've gotten many compliments on these $5 sandals!

I wanted to fix them up, so I started thinking about what I could do. I figured that since they now sell shoes that have suede/sueded lining, I could check out the craft store and see what I could use to cover the lining. I ended up buying a piece of suede and cutting it to fit, and then super gluing it in. They look SO much better now, and although it's not perfect, I get to keep wearing the shoes I love.

I have been shopping for replacements for a low price for a while, but I really wanted to keep these shoes. I'm sure this will prolong their life!

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Keep Track of Children When in Large Crowds

I just read the tip about dressing kids in all one color shirt when in big crowds. I'm a foster mom and mom, and when I take kids to someplace with lots of people or opportunity to get separated, I write my cell phone number in ink on each child's arm so if they get lost, they can have someone call me! Thankfully we've never had to use it, but it's nice to know they have my number if they need it! A piece of paper can easily be misplaced, an arm, hopefully not so much!

Another thing I do if I have numerous young children at a zoo or similar place is I'll take a lightweight rope along. I tie knots in it, spaced about three feet apart. Each child hangs onto a knot (alternating a child on the right, then the left, so they don't trip on each other!). Nice way to keep everyone together and keep the troops moving!

Touching Up Permanent Press Shirts

To ensure my permanent press shirts really do look ready to wear: I remove them immediately from the dryer when it is finished. Then with a little spray bottle filled with water, I spray the collar, button hole placard, and the sleeve edges. Then I quickly "Finger Press" my item focal points to be smooth and flat so they are no longer, folded, curled, or crinkly. This easy finishing touch makes a big difference for permanent press shirts to easily look so much nicer; plus, I know I don't look like I was tumbled in the dryer too :o)

20 Year Class Reunion Ideas

We are having our 20 year class reunion. We are having tailgating party, and tour of school at a home football game on Friday night. Alumni preordered class T shirts to wear to game.

Saturday night is our main event - casual attire at a "ranch", with DJ, and good catering. We mailed out questionnaire sheets and schedule of events months in advance, 20$ single, $40 couple; T shirts were $10 - and we will "make" $2 off each shirt to put back into class account. Giving out awards.

Some awards given at the 10 year were:

  • Florence Nightingale - given to nurse who worked at St. Jude

  • Gulliver's Travel - person who traveled farthest

  • Most Fertile - most kids

  • Coolest Job - person worked for Virgin Records

  • Head of the Class Award - given to person who is principal at former school

We are making name tags with senior pictures on them, that will be printed out prior to registration that Saturday night. We also plan to have a table for a deceased classmates memorial.

Uses for Prescription Bottles

I have seen several people ask about uses for pill bottles and decided to give my assorted uses for them.

I have many of various sizes in my sewing box to sort out the different sizes of snaps, safety pins, and buttons. I have two bigger pill bottles for large safety pins and straight pins.

I have a long bottle in with my yarn, holding crochet needles, one with yarn needles and assorted small knitting items in it.

I keep one bottle by my computer with rolaids, gum, and denture numbing stuff in it.

I have one with dry beans in it for my infant granddaughter to use as a rattle. It has a safety cap that I cannot remove and is too big for her to remove.

My granddaughter said to add using them for barrettes and other assorted hair gadgets, school things such erasers and pencil sharpener.

In my purse I use a large one as my 'wallet', I keep folded bills and my change it it. When I need it, I just look for the white lid. I have a smaller pill bottle in there with bus tokens in it, making them easier to find when needed.

I have one that is just the right size to hold a roll of quarters, that money is for laundry only.

There are many, many other household uses for them, a man can use them to sort nails, tacks, screws, washers, bolts, etc. Let your imagination run wild. Uses are endless.

Use Faded Dish Towels for Kitchen Hand Towels

After I have used my dishtowels for awhile and the the design is fading, I use them to dry my hands on in the kitchen instead of paper towels. And they are also great to use to clean up spills on your carpet instead of using paper towels.

Mini Sticky Notes for Calendar Appointments

I have a friend that uses very small sticky notes to mark her calendar of important appointments. That way, if the appointment changes, she just lifts the sticky note to the new date without marking up her calendar. I thought this was a great idea.

Also, at the end of every year, I take my calendar and write in birthday/anniversary reminders on the new calendar for the entire year. That way, I don't forget an important event.

Example: At the end of this year, I will go back to January, 2009 and see if there are any birth dates or anniversary dates and go to the new January, 2010 calendar and write in the important date for January. I will do this for each month throughout the year.

Homemade Jelly as Christmas Gifts

Give Christmas presents that come from the heart. I buy stemmed glasses at the lowest price possible, figuring one set of 4 for each present. Next, I get 4 boxes of SureJell, a package of wax, and 4 bottles of 100% juice without sugar. I choose juices of different colors: white grape juice, apple juice, pomegranate juice, and regular grape juice.

Following the directions on the SureJell box, I make a batch of jelly using each of the different juices, so that there are four glasses with four different colors of homemade jelly. I melt the wax and pour on top of the jelly about 1/4 inch in thickness to seal the glass. Then I slip the glasses back into the boxes they came in. Each set of four makes an excellent present.

In the event you want to use single glasses as gifts, just put a red or green ribbon around the stem, and either make a bow, or fasten a small decoration to the ribbon.

Source: I figured this out myself one year when I was very short on cash and had three bosses to buy gifts for.

Saving Money on College Books

One of the worst "visible" expenses I had to deal with at college was books and supplies. If you're a freshman, you will be knocked directly on your butt at the cost of a semester's worth of "educational materials." If you're an art student, you'll have to sell body parts to get your supplies! :)

The best way to arm yourself against losing money and getting gouged is to know how the "book racket" works.

  1. You sign up for English 101 and obtain your class book list. It has three books on it - an anthology of stories and two separate "one story" books.

  2. You go to the student bookstore to purchase these books, which, if purchased new, will be around $80-$100.

  3. You make it through class, and at the end of the semester you go back to the bookstore to sell back your books. The bookstore offers you $5. $2 for each of the single-story books, and $1 for your anthology.

So, why the discrepancy?

If the publisher comes out with a new edition of the book, your edition becomes worthless. So those $200 chemistry or math books will now be obsolete because the publisher added an extra sentence.

If a professor isn't going to use the book for the next semester, it becomes worthless. Some book buyback people will throw you a dollar or two to take your book (and then they'll turn around and sell it elsewhere for three times as much - or more).

So, what do you do to save cash?

  1. BUY USED. It's okay to have used books. The bookstores won't sell anything that is falling apart. They always have a lot of used copies. Browse them until you find a nice one. I had a book that cost $65 new - I got it for $19.

  2. DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF TO THE STUDENT BOOKSTORE. Get your booklist as soon as possible and shop around. Shop online for new and used. There are websites specifically for college book sales, returns, etc. Some books will be exclusive to your school bookstore. Most are not. Shop around your dorm, too. If it's second semester, there's a good possibility someone is taking the class you just had, and you are taking a class someone else just had. Sell books to each other, have a book swap - do what it takes to save money.

  3. BOOK BUYBACK. You are NOT required to sell your books back to the bookstore. When you are done with the books, go to book buyback to see how much they'll offer. If you think it's good - take it; if not, don't. Sell elsewhere - garage sales, Craigslist. Whatever you do, don't let them take your books for free. I have seen students who will leave their books at the buyback because the bookstore says they won't buy them back (due to reasons stated above). Why would you pay for a book and then return it to them for free. Just because they aren't going to use it at that school doesn't mean they wouldn't box it up and ship it to another school for use. Keep your book and sell it elsewhere. Even 25 cents is more than zero from the bookstore.

And a note to art students - you will be completely gouged by the student bookstore art supply area. Shop elsewhere. Online, at the dollar store (you'd be surprised what you can find) - be creative. You don't need the $100 paint brush. Buy "hues" in oil paint rather than the actual colors. Learn how to stretch your own canvases. Become a scavenger and use unique materials to create art.

I just found out this sneaky bit of info at the Skype site. Skype just upped their connection fee from 3.9 ct to 7.9 ct! That's a 4 ct raise, about twice as much as I got at my job last year.

See this link for more info:

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A man is concentrating diligently on the papers on his desk when a co-worker comes up.

"Say, you want to hit the golf course this afternoon?" he asks.

"Sorry," the man says, "I can't." "Why not?"

"The doctor tells me I can't play."

"Well," says the co-worker, "we all know that. It's still fresh air fun!"

Advice for a Puppy With Parvo

My puppy just passed away from parvo. It was the most depressing thing I've ever had to experience. I can't get the last day she was alive out of my head, it was so sad to see her laying there hopeless. I have two other pups from the same litter and another one is showing signs.

I took them all to the vet, but only one was treated. She is the one that passed, her name was Blackie. She was a cute little chihuahua. Well the vet did not treat the other two, because they were not showing signs yet, so I took them home.

The day Blackie passed, one of my other little pups (her name is Brownie) started showing signs, I've been treating her with the same meds the vet gave me for Blackie and I have been giving her pedialyte . She's going on her third day of not eating and once in a while she throws up, but I give her meds for that, yesterday she started drinking water on her own.

There are times when she looks good and she is a little active and then there are other times that she looks depressed and she just lays there. What else can I do to help her? Do dogs get fevers, and if so what can I do for her? I have one other pup named Boy, he seems to be just fine. Should I separate them? I separated Blackie from the other 2, but one still got sick. How long does recovery last and can they still get worse even if they look like they are improving? The pups are 5 months old. Can someone give me advice? I can't go through another loss.
