Scenery: Sailboat and Gulls
This is simply a beautiful show of nature. I was at the beach about to snap a picture of a sailboat in the distance. Just as I snapped the button, the beautiful seagulls flew right past in between the camera and the sailboat. A beautiful contrast!

Craft: Button Trees
I love buttons! I also save lots of things you might consider JUNK, which I re-use to make beautiful household items and jewelry, like my button and earring trees.
Materials:
- small planter or clay pots
- styrofoam cone
- glue (I used E-6000)
- gold spray paint
- assorted buttons, earrings, beads or jewelry findings
- assorted ribbons and greenery
- florist moss
Instructions
Begin by gluing 2 clay post together. Allow to dry. Spray paint gold, allow to dry.
In the meantime, starting at the TOP of the styrofoam cone, secure assorted flat backed buttons as close together as possible. Do not worry about spaces. You will add another layer of buttons (shank) to fill in any holes. STOP approximately 1-1.5 inches from bottom. Work in sections, allowing to dry thoroughly between sessions. Once the cone has been decorated to your satisfaction, place a layer of glue on the INSIDE of the clay pot. Place a small amount of moss (allow to "hang out" slightly) and firmly push cone into the clay pot. Move moss around to cover any styrofoam. You can add additional buttons later to fill in any blank spaces. Allow glue to dry. You may now decorate the outside of the pot using wired ribbon and greenery.
I make several of these and display with my nativity set. They are beautiful and very unusual.

Use Seasonal Veggies As Your Centerpiece
Fresh vegetables from your garden can make a beautiful table decoration. I change the centerpiece on my table according to what vegetables are in at the moment.
Right now, the summer garden is about finished so we have mainly peppers. An edible centerpiece, how great is that?

Gizmo (Ragdoll)
This is Gizmo. He is 8 years old and a Ragdoll. I got Gizmo when he was 7 weeks old from my son's friend who's cat had kittens.
He really doesn't do all that much but he HAS to be where ever I am including the bathroom! My husband says that Gizmo will stand by the door when I'm outside or at the store and meow until I come back. He thinks he's a dog!

Craft Project: Single Crochet Potholder
If you can single crochet, you can make this heavy double thickness potholder.
Approximate Time two hours
Supplies:
Instructions:
- Chain 40 or whatever size you want your potholder. (This will be the size.)
- Single crochet on each side of the chain. Do not add stiches at the end of the row. You want it to start to "buckle" right away.

- Continue single crocheting around until the yarn meets. This will take awhile, so sit back and enjoy, but make sure not to add stitches.
- When the yarn meets you will be ready to close the potholder. I crochet it closed, but you can slip stitch and it will look exactly the same.
- Chain six (or whatever you would like) to form the loop. Inside the chain single crochet to give the loop strength.

This is a great way to use up scrap yarn and the potholders are very sturdy when going through the washer.

Use Toothpaste to Remove Water Stains from Wood
Any brand of plain, white toothpaste (not gel) will almost always remove a water stain (left by a glass) from your wood table. Rub enough toothpaste over the stain to cover it completely - you don't need a lot (a little more than a thin film is plenty). Leave the toothpaste on the stain until completely dry (this may take a few hours and although it may be awful to look at, I have never ruined a piece of wood by leaving the paste on overnight).
Once dry, simply wipe the toothpaste off with a clean damp cloth. Completely dry your furniture with a clean, dry cloth and then polish as you normally would. As a side note, if you apply the toothpaste with a lint-free cloth, you can use the extra paste left on the cloth to apply to your clean bathroom mirror. It will help to keep your mirror from excessive fogging after a hot shower.

Watch Cell Phones In Hot Weather
Maybe some of you already know this, but since I am a senior citizen and not tech savvy, I didn't.
I left my cell phone in my car for 2 hours with the heat index down here in the Rio Grande Valley being 110. When I picked it up, it was DEAD. No way to turn it on, or to charge it. After a couple of hours in the house A/C, I took it to Sprint Office, and as they were checking it out, it started to work. No permanent damage, and battery seemed to be OK, but not a good idea to do that again.

Buy a Little Present Every Month for Christmas
When my 3 children were little, money was tight. So I bought a present for each child every month. Granted they were very inexpensive gifts but they still had 12 gifts to open on Christmas morning. I also crocheted each of them a hat, scarf, and mittens so they had something personal from me.

Use Fabric Made From Bamboo
Bamboo is a renewable resource plus it helps reduce the need for laundry. Now that clothing, towels etc. are made from bamboo fiber, we can all look forward to doing less laundry. Bamboo fiber has a natural ability to repel bacteria and odors. I have personally experienced this with bamboo t-shirts I bought from http://www.doBamboo.com.
I can wear the same shirt for several days without it smelling bad. This has reduced my need to do laundry. When I do launder my bamboo clothes, I can use natural very mild laundry soap. Because of bamboo's anti-fungal properties there is no need for harsh cleaning agents. Plus, bamboo grows really fast and replenishes itself. It does not have to be planted after it is harvested, making it a renewable resource. All this plus bamboo fiber products are ultra soft!

Swap Sports Supplies With Other Parents
My son has played football for 8 years and is currently playing JV football in high school. My husband is a coach for the youth football league so I have faced the cost of spikes, etc many times. Talk to other parents, they may have used gear they can't use anymore. Also talk to coaches of the sport your child is in, they accumulate extra stuff all the time. I have several sets of spikes my son can't use anymore so I go to my husband's practice and see if anyone else can use them.

Save Time And Money By Organizing Your Closet
If you organize your wardrobe you'll save time, money, and avoid clutter. I hang clothing by type, season, then color. For example, long sleeve tops in one corner of the wardrobe, skirts in another, short sleeved tops, pants, and jackets in another section. This way, you can easily grab whatever pieces you need for each season and occasion. I do something similar for shoes. I organize footwear by type, color, and season (work, recreation, boots, then by color).
Each year I purge old items to keep the items well organized. You can sell or donate to friends and charity what you no longer need. For children, you can encourage them to invite friends of the same size for a clothes swapping party. It will be fun for them and save you money.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day
An incompetent counterfeiter spent all day making his funny
money. At the end of the day he realizes he spent all his time
making $15 bills.
He figures that the only way he's going to get anything from this
batch of money, is to find a place where the people aren't too
bright and change his phony money for real cash.
He travels to a small town in West Virginia and walks into a
small Mom and Pop grocery store. He goes to the old man behind
the counter and asks him, "Do you have change for a $15 bill?"
The old man replies, "Ah shore do...How would you like that? An 8
and a 7 or two 6s and a three?"

What Breed Is My Dog?
I rescued Kody from a shelter in March of 2007 and his paperwork said he was about 1-yo and German Shepherd mix. Since then, people have told me he looks like he has some Husky, Malinois, or Chow (because of the spots on his tongue) mixed in. Many people say that he can't be purebred German Shepherd because he is too small.
He is 60 lbs with light-medium brown eyes, soft fur, and a straight tail. He has a white undercoat and sheds a ton. He is super smart, protective, very friendly, not overly energetic, somewhat vocal but doesn't bark too much, very sweet and playful.
I'd love to hear any thoughts about his breed. I am just so curious, but I don't have the money to do a DNA test. Kody is my best friend and I love him more than I can even explain. =)
This picture (from Jan 2008) is the best profile shot I have of Kody, but keep in mind that my boyfriend is standing behind him (boyfriend = 6'1) and Kody's back legs are bent.

House Is Humid and Musty
My house is humid and smells musty. We moved into a rental a few months ago. I am from Oregon so I know that it's very humid here in OK. but it's really humid in the house too. There is central a/c but even when it's cool in the house I'll notice if I leave crackers or something on the table even for an hour or two they get soft. And the worst part is a musty smell. Most people don't notice but I use a lot of air freshener and candles so I think it covers it.
I know that the filters in the vents are new and I can't leave the doors open because it's so hot and humid outside, not to mention all the flies and bugs. I've been seeing moths in the closets too. I've heard of leaving out vinegar for the musty smell and also a dehumidifier. Where can I get one and are they expensive? And why is it so humid in here to begin with? I hate this musty smell, it's so embarrassing! Please help!

Master the Mouse
