I'm having a 13th birthday party with boys and girls. It's going to be a Halloween party theme in my front yard and its going to be a costume party. I have no ideas what games to play.

I've been having my kiddos guess the answers to Halloween riddles for several years (during or right after dinner), but this year I added something new: for each correct answer, I gave the child who guessed it one "pumpkin buck" (a printed sheet with a pumpkin on it and the words "ONE PUMPKIN BUCK"). During our last Halloween-themed dinner this week, I conducted an auction for them. I held up one item at a time, and each child could bid on that item or wait in the hope something better was still in my bag! I had 12 items ranging from packs of gum, individual candy bars, to a small game and and a DVD. They LOVED this and begged me to do it again next year. (By the way, I collected almost 60 riddles!) GREAT fun!

I think that the game where you fill a box with packing peanuts or ripped up tissue paper and hide prizes inside is kind of fun. Candy is usually best for older grades. They think prizes are cheesy.

We have played many different types of games during halloween parties. Guessing games, like how many pieces of candy in a jar. Or Hot Pumpkin (like Hot Potato, just you use a pumpkin. Or even a Monster Match Game. Where they have to find a color, or a scary costume and write their friends name down on the worksheet. You can even make it harder and put a time limit on it. I have four children and have had to do parties for all of them. This year I have three that I am a room parent for. Fun Fun!

I think to add a bit more fun to Halloween you could play mumify. Mumify was created by me and what you have to do is have two teams and wrap one team member (from each team) up in toilet roll and then unroll them again and whichever team loses gets a cold mixture of mushy peas, diced carrots, custard and cold spaghetti chucked at them by the winning team.

Janey

Editor's Note: Although the mummy part sounds fun, it's a cold time of year for the food throw. You might think of something better for the losing team.

I usually have a Halloween Party and have to think up games for adults. One year we all put our names in a hat and drew out for two teams (size of team does not matter) and each team had to get on a broom and they raced up a hill, around the house, and back to the beginning...if someone fell off they had to start again. Needless to say, neither team made it all the way up the hill without losing someone, but they laughed and had alot of fun doing it. Another year I nailed a 2x4 (approx. 18" long) to a 4' ladder and pounded a nail on the end of the 2x4. Each person got an apple with a string tied to the stem which they had to tie around their waist and then swing the apple up to stick on the nail. We have some very funny pictures of their "hip swinging" antics.

I run a youth club, and tonight is our Halloween party. Another game is bibbing for creepy crawlies, use jelly baff stuff added to kids baths to make it gooey, put jelly baff or normal jelly mushed in big bowl and add jelly spiders worms and so on, then the kids have to get the jellys out. They absolutely love this game but very messy.

I'm having a Halloween party. 40 kids coming. All out of my daughters class. We have no idea what to do. I don't want them being bored or making a laugh, but she really wants one!

Please help me, anon.

I think a great idea is a scavenger hunt outdoors! You could make two teams and have each time look for an item on the list. You could have ten items on the list and each team goes around looking for the hidden items. Hope this info helped!

For a children's Halloween party game, how about a clue-based mystery game with a Halloween theme. I have just reviewed a site with Halloween games for all ages and party size: http://comparetop5.com/entertainmen ... mes-online/games-for-halloween-party

I also liked to do a hula-hoop contest with a little twist. You would put different kinds of gummies on the floor and then give the kids a hula-hoop and then they would have to hula-hoop while they are trying to not hit the candy creatures.

Something I used to do around 6th grade was a donut eating contest. You tie a donut to a string and put your hands behing your back and try to eat it. It's really fun and the kids have a blast.

"bobbing for marshmallows"

fill a big bowl with flour and then stick 4-6 marshmallows in [depending on how big the bowl is]. and people stick their faces in and bob for the marshmallows.
It's hard and really fun, but messy.
Play it outside just so your house doesn't get too messy.

I think that you should do the bobbing for apples. It is an old game but it is really fun!

well I remember when I was a teenager that one of the games we played was choosing a folded piece of paper out of a plastic pumpkin that gave directions to finding another piece of paper of what silly thing we'd have to do. (ex.) drink a cup of apple cider with using your hands.

You can tape off an area of the floor and toss gummy worms, plastic spiders, little pumpkins, gummy bears or other small item on the floor and have them hop on one foot and not step on any......Keep adding more as they finish and start a new line. Change up and have them do it backwards, sideways etc. They all line up and want to do it over and over again.

I'm throwing a Halloween party and I have everything but need ideas for games. I know you can play a game like hide and go seek but I want something different, exciting and something I've never done before!

Thank you,

Request: Halloween Party Games

Archived on 10/06/2006

Now that the kids have reached 6th grade I need better Halloween party ideas. Not little kid games, even though they love all the little kid games, they just don't want to admit it any more. Any ideas?

My Ideas

There's always the traditional apple bobbing, or you could have them pass an apple (or small pumpkin or colored squash) from person to person - you know the game where you put the apple under the chin and pass from one to another while their hands are tied behind their back? You could also have a Halloween costume in each of 2 bags and they could race to see who can turn themselves into, say a scarecrow or pirate or whatever the fastest. Or you could take some cues from "Who's line is it anyway" (I think) and give them some common and not so common objects and they have to come up w/an alternative use - whoever uses the most items wins. Wish I could be there! I love to play games and I really love Halloween! (09/13/2005)

RE: Halloween Party Games

For our past halloween parties we usually don't have formal games we have just trick-or-treated and played pretend around the cardboard haunted castle we created. But I have gathered and thought up a couple of games that might be useful to you.

String Hunt

One is a string hunt. this is most fun in the dark but I suppose could be ok in the day. Take a diffrent ball of yarn for each kid (you will only use up a small portion of the yarn on one ball), then tie one end to the a treat bag. Hide these in many different places so it's more fun. The strings also should be distinct from one another so they don't get mixed up with who is who's. Then you have one end of the yarn tied to the treat bag you wind the string all through your yard and house. Do this with each one and let the kids hold the ends of the yarn cord and follow it along to their treat bag.

What Monster Am I?

Another good game is what monster am I? You write monsters on index cards. You can get creative with this part using monsters like The boogie man, a bed bug and the evil fairy in sleeping beauty rather then the usal frankenstien and Dracula. How the game works is one kid comes up and stands with their back to the rest of the kids. Then you tape one of the index cards too his or her back and they have to ask the other kids questons about the monster to figure out which one they are. Note: if kids are not at reading level then you can use pictures instead.

Zombie Tag

Another game is Zombie tag. This is not really like tag but a spin off of blinds man bluff that I came up with. One person gets to be the zombie and is blind folded then puts there arms ahead like they are sleep walking or rising from the dead. Then they try and tag the other kids while in blind fold. if one is taged then they are blinded folded and become zombies helper but they have to tag people twice to turn them into zombies helper. This helper would have to tag 3 times and so fourth intell theres only one person remaing un-zombie and there's the winner. (09/28/2005)

Jumping For Apples

Play "Jumping for Apples". You can tie string to an apple and tie the other end to a limb on a tree. Put your hands behind your back and jump and try to get it. (09/28/2005)

Pin The Tail on the...

You can play pin the wart on the witch nose or pin the nose on the jack-o-lantern. It's a spin off of pin the tail on the donkey. (09/29/2005)

Pumpkin Bowling

This year I made "pumpkin bowling" for the kids. All you do is save 10 empty pop bottles (I used the 24 oz. size). Decorate them with a halloween theme. I made a ghost, pumpkin, frankenstein, mummy etc. Then you use a real pumpkin for your bowling ball. It's a little harder because the pumpkin isn't perfectly round. I think the kids would like it at any age. (10/04/2005)

Mummy Wrap

Each team gets 2 roles of toilet paper. 2 out of three people in the group begin to wrap the third person. Each team gets 5 minutes. Whomever gets their mummy wrapped the best, and gets most of their mummy wrapped wins the game. (10/30/2005)
