Garden: Purple Coneflower (Echinacea) This bee was on one of my cone flowers. I was afraid he had overdosed on pollen, he was breathing really heavy. I went into the house and when I came back out to check on him, he was gone. I am sure he was the hero of the day in his nest! By mandypandy from Pittsburgh, PA

Rate It: Use Cutlery Tray for Desk Drawer Organizer Ever wondered what other uses cutlery trays have? I cheaply sourced one at a garage sale recently with an extra sliding top tray which lifts off. I ended up using it to store/organize stationary bits and pieces in a drawer in our computer room. Before this I was going to use it in my make-up/hair accessory drawer. By Knitwit Contest Contender!

This is kind of a joke, but not really. I had these pictures, sent to me after the death of my mother. This one was of my dad, after putting together a scare crow, at the beginning of decorations for an autumn harvest party at their church. By the way, dad is on the left. He was always so busy, dug up his extra iris bulbs and other flowers to sell for their fund raising, and even in his later years tried to help whenever they needed it. Hope you enjoy the picture. I sure did. source: my brother who sent the box of pictures by ljf (loretta) from Theodore, Alabama Contest Contender!

This is Pete Joseph Horner, he is 9 years old. Pete was a rescue cat from Sioux City. I do not know his breed. I adopted Pete, it was 4 years ago this week. Pete likes to make us laugh. He always is up to something. He enjoys when I bring in fresh catnip from our garden and he loves to pretend he is a rooster in the morning and mows at us when the alarm clock comes on. I went into the Humane Society looking for a puppy. I stopped by the cat kennels and there was Pete. I know people say that you don't pick pets, they pick you and that is exactly what Pete did. His name at the time was Buddy, but he told me he wanted to change it, so I did to Pete. He is about 18 pounds and full of energy, even at his age. I have been so blessed to have Pete in my life. Dash is 2 years old and a Border Collie. We adopted Dash 2 weeks ago with Ruby the Australian Sheppard. Dash loves to fetch tennis balls, he's really good at catching them on a bounce. He was dropping them at our feet the first day we had him! We hope to get Dash into flyball, he'd be the champ for sure! Dash was found wandering the highway alone. He's such a good boy that we couldn't believe he was a stray. He learns new things very fast and likes us to work with him. He's a fun, active dog and thinks he is a bit of a lap dog, even at 50 pounds :) By Shelli from Onalaska, WI Contest Contender!

Make Kids Stickers Out of Free Labels We get a lot of solicitations in the mail that send out free return address stickers. We can't use them all so I cut off the little pictures on one end (flags, wildlife, flowers, etc.) and give them to a 5 year old niece who just loves these stickers! There are also some stamp-like ones that I also pass on to her. By Judy from Valley City, ND Contest Contender!

Use Free Calendars to Organize Tax Information An easy way to keep tax information together is to use one of the free calendars that stores give away. I white out Sunday on the Sunday column and combine Saturday/Sunday under one column at the end. This leaves a blank column at the first of the week for notes. I keep this calendar in a zip up 3 ring binder that I pay weekly bills from. In my 3 ring binder I have sections such as bills, receipts, addresses and telephone numbers, bank statements and credit card statements. I separate these with clear separator sheets. Weekly I staple all checks stubs and receipts that I will need for taxes under the respective months. I make notes about the previous week such as; motel, date, mileage to the motel from job. If the receipts are large then I will make a note on the calendar week the total amount and what the charge was for such as "Motel - $85.00. I then hole punch the receipt that does not fit and put it into a 3 ring binder. About once a month or so I add up my taxable items such as mileage, motel, medical and write this on the top or a column that I create on the side. At the end of the year I move all of this stuff to a folding accordion folder and label it with the year. All fits neatly into a file cabinet and the income tax document can store inside. I can't tell you how many times I have gone back and gotten information out of a previous calendar. Best muscle rub I ever used! I have had chronic pain due to 2 car wrecks, and now arthritis. I decided yesterday to mix several: equal amounts of IcyHot, Aspercream, and BluGoo. Here is a great way to help each other out with clothing, works for adult clothes too. Get your neighborhood, church or whatever together for a clothing exchange. Instead of tossing clothes out or donating to an organization, donate to each other. To make it fair, we cut up different colors of construction paper to represent money values, everyone gets the same amount to spend. This way no one person can scoop it all up. You can also trade items of equal value. It gets to be really fun! Then whats left over can be picked up by goodwill. It really saves on the clothing budget and it feels good to help each other out. We have lots of girls in my neighbor so it works out well and they have fun wearing each others clothes too! By Traceyvarela from Santa Rosa Beach, FL Contest Contender!

Word of the Day - Expand Child's Vocabulary To help my kids expand their vocabularies, I've chose a "word of the day" for several years now. They get it printed on a piece of paper at breakfast, along with the part of speech (noun, verb, etc.), then at dinner, they each try to use the word during our family discussion. I keep track of how many times the word is used and by whom, and list the results on a poster. We're all amazed at how much their vocabularies have grown (and can see the number of new words they learned each month). It's exciting to be able to explain yourself so precisely because of all the words we have in the English language! Once you use a word 5-10 times, it pretty much stays in your mind. Cell Phone for Emergency Flashlight As I was stumbling through the dark looking for the first light switch on my way through the house, I realized that my cell phone was still lit. It was amazing how helpful that little thing was in providing just enough light. A couple of night's later, my husband walked into the bedroom and said, "You know, I just discovered that my cell phone makes a great emergency source of light." Since we both happened on the idea by accident and recognized its usefulness, I thought maybe others might appreciate this tip. I can also see how it would come in handy to light up the door locks on houses and cars that don't have a light which comes on automatically. By Sandy from Elon, NC Contest Contender!

Save on Contractors During Hard Economic Times In the past year I have needed to remodel two homes and in the process of working on one now. Normally, I try to do as much of the work as I am able, as I cannot normally afford hired help. Because of the recent economy and the need for work by contractors and handy men/women, I have found I can have many of the tasks done at affordable prices. I make a list of what projects needs to be done and decide what I would be willing to pay for the task at hand, as compared to doing it myself. I do not like to negotiate so I call the contractors and tell them, "please do not be offended, I don't normally hire work out, but here is my list and what I am willing to pay." I don't care to negotiate as I find it uncomfortable. I explain the situation as how I usually do these things myself, but know people are trying to keep their crews working and if he/she is willing to work with me, he is hired. I have yet to be turned down. The labor cost I am saving has been on the average of 50 percent, sometimes much more, and the contractors have been very grateful to have the work. Its a win - win for both of us. By Tracey V. from Santa Rosa Beach, FL Contest Contender!

Rate It: Inexpensive Western Wedding Decorations My fiance and I are getting married in May 2010 and we are having a western wedding with royal blue and silver as our colors. Rate It: Rat Droppings in Mobile Home Insulation I have just read tons of ThriftyFun responses on how to get rid of smells from "downunder". Mine is mobile home underbelly smelly. However, I have an additional problem which no one mentioned, rat poop in the insulation throughout the underbelly (I know, it's gross and disgusting). The estimates I've gotten have averaged $3000. I just got "cleaned out" by the person who remodeled the inside of my trailer. Is there anyone who knows of a less expensive route? I can't stand the smell and knowing all the poop is completely throughout the insulation is sickening to me. I also believe its the reason I'm feeling sickly since I've been here almost 2 years. Rate It: Puppy is Having Frequent Accidents I have a sweet little girl, a 6 week old American Pit Bull Terrier. I've had her for 1 week, and from the first day she did fabulously. My Frugal Life: From the Beginning When I left home at 18, I planned on working hard, saving money, and making it out in the big world alone. After the weekends, the kids and I would go to the local party places for the teenagers and collect cans for extra change. I bought clothing and other things I needed exclusively from resale shops and garage sales. I hunted food bargains and bought in bulk when I could. School supplies were recycled by adding a new front to binders and notebooks with a lot of blank pages left. I cooked large meals and froze them into smaller portions to stretch things out when times were really tough. One year we were severely strapped and the kids were 4 and 5 years old around Christmas time. We lived in a very small place with no room for a Christmas tree. So I found some plastic roping that looked like evergreen at a resale shop. I hot glued it to the wall in the shape of a tree that went from a foot off the floor to the ceiling. I filled it in with the remaining roping and then hot glued the lights on as well. I added a "trunk" made from brown construction paper at the bottom of the tree to the floor. I hung all the ornaments that the kids made and ones that we had from years past. When I plugged in the lights, it looked like a real tree! I got many complements on that tree! As the kids grew, I did my best to provide them with what the needed, on a frugal budget. After my divorce, things got very tough, but we managed. Coupons, mac and cheese, and many inventive recipes helped. At least the kids never went hungry, though I cant say the same for myself. I continued my frugal ways, teaching both the kids how to live without spending like their friends did. We lived in an affluent area, so it was hard for them, but they both understood and adapted. My daughter learned how to shop sales racks at nice stores for torn, damaged name brand clothing and repair them so that she could "fit in". My son simply never asked for more than I could provide. Now they are both grown, on their own, and living their own frugal lives. Both have told me that the lessons they had learned from me have helped them save money for the more important things, while not going without the things we all need to survive. That makes me feel good! Being frugal has helped me see what is truly important in life. What we should spend money for and what we can get for much less with a little effort. It is my opinion that this should be taught as course in high school and college. We would all be better off if more of our children coming up realize frugality is not a bad thing. It's a blessing. Now I am being blessed with a frugal wedding for under $300! Chapel, reception hall, food, and dress included! It is my hope that we all try to live a more simple, frugal life.
