Gooding and Ducklings (Muscovy Duck)

Gooding is 1 year old and a Muscovy Duck. My husband and I found Gooding and her siblings, Berry and Lawrence, at a flea market last fall. All three for the very thrifty price of $10! We had always wanted to have Muscovy ducks, and found these three to be so pleasant and interesting that we have gotten two more since then. And now, we have ten more, thanks to Gooding!

Gooding and the other ducks enjoy meandering about the yard, chasing flies, dipping and dunking in any reservoir of water they can find, taunting the dogs, perching on the picnic table, and sleeping under our van.

I was very surprised to look out the kitchen window a few days ago and see 10 wee little ducklings under Gooding's protective wings! Even more shocking than the fact that she had incubated the eggs in a hidden location without our knowledge. It was that we had thought Gooding was a MALE!

I never thought of having a duck for a pet! Do they let you pet them? The babies are so sweet and fuzzy. Thanks for sharing them with us and God bless you.

Interesting that the first item under the picture of Gooding and Ducklings was a link to "roast duck"

Editor's Note: Hmmm, those are generated automatically. Sorry about that.

Arent they the sweetest creatures. Muscovies are the best. We have many domesticated-like wild muscovies in our neighborhood. Some of the females have hidden nests with eggs theyre sitting on. There is one nest that is somewhat open to danger and I would like to put it into an open-type of plastic box which is 28 x 15 x 25. There is about 10 opening on each side around the box at the top of the walls with a flat roof on top for rain protection. On each end there are doors that can open or stay closed.

I want to put it in the same place as the nest is. Do you think by placing the nest into this open box, the female would continue to brood? I thought Id place this box outside near her so she could get use to seeing it for a few days to a week before placing the nest inside. She would be quite able to jump up onto the wall railing and fly off when she wants to. What might be your thoughts, please.

I live at the Carlton Arms in Lutz Florida and its a lake community where we have Muscovy ducks but its heart breaking because people run them over with cars and they suffer dying in the street. 8 in one week were killed. Management wont do anything about it. If anyone reading this message knows an organization that can protect these ducks please help!
