No it won't accept calls from andy jail or prison. Something else you don't know is,, I live about 15 miles from my step dau, in 2 different states. Before she switched to magic Jack I could call her at no extra charge, anytime, now it costs me (the caller to her) 10 cents per minute. I found out the hard way. Now she calls me at no extra charge. If the area code is different, the caller gets charged.

Jails and prisons take advantage of the fact they they get to make all the rules and everyone else has to obey. Typically all calls from inmates MUST be made by calling collect. The jail likely gets a percentage or a fee each time the calls are made. And the worst part, the family members, who have committed no crime get stuck with a huge bill. It would be great of jails permitted inmates to use a calling card. The jails find ways of prohibiting that as a security risk or some other nonsense.

And as far as I know, a collect call can not be made to a MajicJack number. There is no account to be billed so it's not possible. Generally cell phones also cannot receive "collect" calls.

I want to know why magic jack can't accept collect calls from your love ones that's in prison yes they made a mistake but they do deserve to have contact with their love ones without their love ones paying lots of money for the calls. I wish that some one would invent a device that will allow collect call from prison.

This might be naive but can you give the jailed person a phone card so they could use that to call you?

RE: Will "Magic Jack" Work for Collect Calls from Jail?

I don't think collect calls would work with this as it is for calls you make "from" your computer that you hook the phone into. I saw a commercial for this on TV just this past week and there is the $40 purchase and usage fee for the first year. After that it is $20 a year. Still a whole heck of a lot cheaper than what a monthly bill is. Here is the link, check it out. http://www.magicjack.com/1/index.asp (06/14/2008)
