Gentamicin Sulfate Opthalmic Solution 5mL by Falcon Pharmaceuticals is what I used on my cocker's cherry eye. The vet sold me this medicine for use in one of my other cockers and I had it left over and decided to try it on my pup's eye after researching/learning that cherry eye can also be caused from bacteria and decided to give it a try. Her eye cleared up and she'll be a year old in Feb.'09 and the eye condition is totally cleared and never returned.

The drops are made by Falcon Pharmaceuticals and is called Gentamicin Sulfate Opthalmic Solution and is 5mL

My cocker will be one year old in Feb. and I figure her eye problem developed from bacteria since it has never returned. The vet did not sell the drops as treatment for cherry eye, but I had it left over from one of my other dogs whose eyes were infected. I thought what at this point did I have to lose by trying it on my cocker's eye just in case after researching and learning that bacteria can also cause this condition. Just happened to be what it took to take care of her eye problem.

I have a question for Lorelei, do you remember the name of the drops you used for your puppy. my vet gave an ointment and I do not know if that would work as well. I have a Boston Puppy, she is only 16 weeks, her brother puppy plays pretty rough. I hoping it is just a scratch. thanks a million.

My Cocker Spaniel puppy is five months old. He has had the surgery twice and it has came back both times. Only in his right eye. I know they do remove the third eye lid at times, rather than tuck it, but they don't like to do that.

Depends on the vet's option. Around our neck of the woods, it costs around $175.00-$100.00 to have it done. It's not a difficult surgery for the vet. The best surgical option I've learned about is to have a pocket formed under the eye and the third eyelid placed in it and sutured over. This is suppose to be the type of surgery that will prevent re occurrences versus the fold and tuck which might have to be done again later. Not good to have gland totally removed as problems down the road will happen. Dry eye and lots of drops for remainder of pet's life as this gland (third eyelid) helps in producing tears to keep eyes moistened naturally.

My pet cocker is a pup and was teething at the time of her one eye becoming a cherry eye. I put some good eye drops from the vet in it and within two weeks time, the eye was totally clear and it has not come back. It is possible a sibling from the litter scratched her eye and it was inflamed, but the drops took care of any infection if that was the case.

So, cherry eye happens from bacteria (environmental issues), teething, and weak eye muscle.

If this reoccurs in the future, I will be more knowledgeable as to deciding the type of surgery that will correct and hopefully prevent a re occurrence. Thanks to all who have replied.

We were given a puppy and now it has cherry eye. Can anyone tell me how expensive the surgery was?

My Chihuahua had one, our vet removed it, he has been fine, the other eye never developed one. The surgery was a one day deal. Good Luck!

I adopted a puppy that had a cherry eye. The humane society tucked the cherry and warned me that eventually the other eye would do the same because of her breed. When it cherried, I took her to the vet and they felt that it needed to be removed. She has had a few problems with her eyes, I keep them clean but have had to put drops in them on occasion when they get matte in them. She is a red, part dachsund (sp), we adopted her from the humane society and her name is Cherry.

We love her and she is happy. I clean her eyes every day, just like washing a babies face...which is exactly what I'm doing, washing my babies face.

I do not know which is the best procedure, because both eyes have had to have drops at one point or another.

If you do not trust your vet, find another. If you are adopting, you pretty much have to accept what they offer.

I hope this helps.

Take your puppy to the vet, they will do same day surgery. My cocker spaniel just had it done, and it looks great.
