Oreo (Boston Terrier)

Oreo is our 1 year old Boston Terrier. We got him the end of May 2007, I had just signed up to our local Freecycle group site and within 3 days he was posted. We had been talking about getting a Boston Terrier after we got married in June. BUT there he was and we brought him home and he is a big part of our family. We drove 125 miles round trip to get him.

He loves to play with his toys, be outside, play with us. He and my husband play a lot and they have a blast together, if they don't play together after work Oreo is sad.

He has been such a delight and blessing to our family. He has a quite a personality and is hilarious to have. I have never had a BT before, I cannot imagine having any other kind of dog now.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Stretching Virgin Olive Oil with Canola Oil

Virgin olive oil is so expensive, however it does provide an extra olive taste, which is so nice in certain recipes. Being on a budget and not wanting to sacrifice taste, I have mixed 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil to 2/3 cup Canola oil. It tastes great, and is much more economical. I recently read that using olive oil all the time, isn't as good for you as a variety of heart healthy oils. I was pleased to know I was already doing that.

Use a Papertowel Holder for Toilet Tissue Storage

Store 3 rolls on tissue in the bathroom. I use a freestanding papertowel holder placed on top of my spacesaver. It takes up little room and stores extra tissue. Don't you dislike being in the bathroom and you have run out of tissue. This works great in my house.

Make Your Own Fruit Basket And Trays

Don't pay to get your fruit baskets made, do it yourself. You can buy a basket or pretty bowl, or anything you want too make this in. The wrap you can get at Dollar Tree and you just pull it over the basket or container and use a blow dryer on it. Just like the stores do, only less expensive. I did work at Kroger in the produce department making these. On the trays, you can buy them also from your store for $1.00 to $2.00. They have the lid so you can make your own for lots cheaper. You can put your dip in a bell pepper or whatever you would like and cover it.

Use Newspaper To Absorb Spills

This is an old tip - but remember that newspaper is very absorbent - so use it as a frugal alternative to sop up spills. (But remember that on a light surface, the ink may run. In a bathroom, say, use a bottom layer of paper towels between the bulk of the newspaper and the linoleum or you will get ink stains on the floor!) It's also great for cleaning glass surfaces, leaves no lint!

Make Your Own Lipstick Compact With Leftover Lipstick

My tip is for being able to use the last of lipstick tubes. You take a pill box that is labeled for the days of the week. Then you dig out the last remnants of the tubes of lipstick and you put one color per compartment. In the last compartment, you put vaseline. Now you have your own custom lipstick compact. Just use your lipstick brush and mix and match any of the colors for your own special look and then use the Vaseline for the glossy finish.

Unfiltered Apple Cider Is Better For You

When purchasing apple cider vinegar for cooking, read the label to make sure that it is made using the whole apple and unfiltered. If not, the vinegar is not as high of quality and precious nutrients will be missing. The best place to buy unfiltered apple cider vinegar is at the health food store such as V.P. Toothpicks for Glueing Small Projects

Use toothpicks or wooden skewers to apply liquid glue for small projects. You have more control with where you put the glue, and you won"t use too much.

Use a Photo Album for Recipes

My tip is for keeping your recipes that you print from the internet in order. My friend gave me a beautiful photo album that had a fruit design. I thought "Wow, this would look nice on a shelf in my kitchen." I then thought that it would be a great place to keep all the great recipes I find online that I had printed out. Now when I cook a recipe the recipe does not get messed up because the album pages keep the recipes clean.

Eye Soap For Makeup Removal

Advice For Possible Misuse of Fund Raising Money

There seems to be a lot of sensible people on this post so I thought I'd get some input to a moral dilemma. I work for an private school which does fund raising. The parents raised over $5000 last year. This money was to go to specific purchases agreed upon by the administrator and the parents. Over the summer the administrator canceled the agreed purchases and used the money for other costs. No one knew until returning this fall. Interestingly enough, the parents are split on their opinions. Some believe it was a poor choice by a desperate person. Others feel it was stealing. Needless to say, us employees are confused as to handle this situation. Any thoughts?

Thrifty Food Ideas For Wedding Reception

I am getting married May 17 2008 and we are on a tight budget! We would like to have a buffet dinner but we cant decided on what food would be a inexpensive meal to serve. We really cant afford a full service catering. We were also trying to figure out what would be the best way to put out the food. Because when the wedding is over everyone will go to the reception hall and eat. But all of our family and friends will be at the wedding and they will not be able to put food out until they get to the reception hall. Please help what is the best way to do this!

Homemade Halloween Decorations

I'd like ideas for decorating my yard and house for Halloween. My kids are 9, 7, & 3. We've never decorated before and it means a lot to my kids. They're actually grieving over it every holiday. It's just that my husband always talks us out of it as it costs money and time.

I need ideas that are simple and that the four of us can do together with little help from my husband. My daughter had an idea to hang ghosts from some of our 9 maple trees in the front and to make our house (150 feet back from the road) look haunted. I need to know the best way to make homemade ghosts and how to hang them! Also, she suggested having animals and monsters peeking out from the trees. Other ideas welcome. Thanks bunches!

Advice For Preventing Towels Getting Wrapped Up In Dryer

When I dry sheets and towels in the dryer they get all wrapped up in a sort of cigar shape. The things on the inside don't get dried, and I have to unravel everything and throw it back in. Which Is Better, a Treadmill Or An Exercise Bike?

I need to do something while being a couch potato when I get home, so I thought since I need to lose some weight (I need help from my waist to my thighs), I'd do one or the other while watching my shows. I have a lateral thigh trainer or something, but I barely use it anymore. I think I'm bored of it. That happens after a while with these things I buy. I do walk at work, but not enough. I thought I'd look for yard sales to get one or the other this weekend while I'm out so I'm not buying from one of the stores...save money and all that. Also, is motorized better than self moved, or however it's worded? I also can't take up too much room in my apartment or bother the neighbors with a noisy machine. I'm leaning toward a bike with some resistance?

Rescued Dog Has Not Warmed Up

4 days ago I adopted a rescued dog and he has not warmed up to me or my son at all. My son is 3 years old. He follows my wife around but cowers down from any physical contact. He will not let you pet him, play with him, or do anything with him for that fact. He is about 2 years old, and we were wondering if maybe he was a victim of abuse? Any suggestions on fixing the problem?

Cleaning Different Stains from Pillow Top Mattress

I have a pillow top mattress stained with blue ballpoint ink,pet urine, and my husbands sweat.I believe that I got out the pet urine but anything that is cleaned on the mattress stained or not also leaves water stains, we tried a stain remover for ink which got out most of it, but my mattress is only a year old and from looking at it, you wouldn't think so. I would have even tried to bleach it but it's a cream color mattress. Do you have any ideas to clean all the stains on my mattress and help me get it to look like new? I'm desperate.Thanks.

Dyed Hair Red but Want It Brighter

Dyed my virgin hair red-but I want it brighter! I have dark brown hair and dyed my hair a deep red yesterday (Herbal Essences #44) and it is pretty, but not what I expected.

I know that it is because my hair is dark brown, but the shade still looked pretty bright on the color indicator on the box. Now, I used to dye my hair ALL THE TIME when I was a teenager (I'm 26 now) so I am a pro at messing up my hair. I remember the root situation.

How do I dye my hair a pretty bright red (think Titanic) with a home coloring box to where I can maintain it myself? I can wait 4-6 weeks before doing it again, but if I use a lighter shade, won't the roots be super bright and not match my whole head? Help!

Thanks.
