Jazmin (Golden Retriever Mix)

I'm not sure how old Jazmin is, probably about 7 years of age, guessing from how long we have had her and approximately how old she was at the time we adopted her. She is a Golden Retriever mix. We got her about 7 years ago from our local animal shelter.

She likes to chase toys and retrieve them. She is such a sweetheart. She's older and very sensitive to our emotions, loves us very much and we feel the same way about her.

Crybaby the Cat

Crybaby is a 3 year old domestic medium hair cat, resuced from being left when the owners moved.

Favorite activities: Chase the other 5 cats! We named him crybaby for a reason. Very vocal!

Decorating Clothing with Ribbon

Here's a quick, cheap and easy way to jazz up some underwear or add a touch of class to a top.

Equipment:

  • Needle
  • thread
  • ribbon
  • scissors
  • nail varnish
  • clothing to decorate

Instructions:

Lay out the ribbon in a criss-cross pattern across the garment, as in the photo. At each corner, attach the ribbon to the fabric with small stitches, and tie the thread off neatly and strongly at the back.

Tie the tails at the bottom into a bow and sew into place. Cut both ends of ribbon diagonally to a pleasing length and prevent fraying by dabbing a little clear nail varnish onto them. You could fashion small bows out of ribbon and sew them onto other places as well.

Seaside in a Bowl

Materials:

  • A glass bowl that you like
  • Sand
  • Seaside items (or you could use fake snow and winter objects - just use your imagination)

Directions:

Just put in sand and then arrange items where you want them. It's that simple.

By Sandy from Bluff City, TN

Editor's Note: This would be fun to do with the shells, rocks and small pieces of driftwood that you can find on the beach. If you don't live near the ocean, similar rocks and wood can be found near some small creeks or streams.

Storage Cans with Candy and Juice Pouches

Make storage cans with empty cans. This one shown was made to be a pencil can. Oh how I always lose my pens. Take you empty can rinse it out with soap and water. Let air dry. Find anything your not using and cover the front. I used juice pouches to match the purse. :) Be careful the hot glue is very hot. Trim with your favorite decals and go. Thanks for reading this.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Crayon Hearts

Heat oven to 250 degrees F. Fill each mold with assorted colors of crayon pieces (paper removed) and bake until the crayons melt, about 10 to 15 minutes. (Tip: Place a sheet pan under the crayons to catch any drips). Once they're cool, remove the hearts from the mold and smooth any rough edges by rubbing them on a piece of scrap paper or a steak knife. Use small pieces of foam tape to stick each heart to a 3-inch circle cut from card stock and add a message.

Suggested messages:

  • You color my world
  • Valentine, you make my heart melt
  • Have a happy Valentine's Day, for "crayon" out loud!

We made these with our children, so easy to make. It gets rid of all those broken old crayons. You can actually use any shape metal cookie or muffin tin our tins were heart shaped and about 1 1/2 inches across.but you can use any size you'd like, bigger or smaller. You can make solid colors or multi colored shapes. We not only made the valentine cards for school but also just used them as unusual shaped crayons.

Stashing Money To Wait For Payday

Sometimes it gets a little tight waiting for payday, so I go into the money stashes I have to ease things just a bit. The stashes include my piggy bank (I do have one), and other coin receptacles. I found $20 plus dollars just lying around, which will tide me over.

My parents used to hide $20 bills in their books, until one time they couldn't remember which one they put it in!

Stretching Expensive Lip Gloss

I had gotten a good deal on some rather expensive lip gloss, but I found it was a bit to "waxy" for my purposes. So I took an old flat gloss container, and mixed the expensive stuff with some plain old petroleum jelly and it became the moisturizing lip stuff I prefer, and it will last and last and last.

My First Recipe: Creamed Tuna On Toast

My first recipe, at least for dinner, was fixing Creamed Tuna on Toast for my little sisters. You take 2 Tbsp. butter, melt it in a skillet then add 2 Tbsp. flour. When it is all mixed into a paste, add milk, a little at a time and stir. When it is a sauce, add one can of tuna (drained) and one can of peas (drained.) Serve it on toast. We had this most times when my mom couldn't be home to cook dinner until I learned to cook other things.

Make Beads From Junk Mail

I make beads out of junk mail and make friendship bracelets with them and they are easy to do! Use only the shinny paper that comes in the mail and cut or tear it in strips approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch by 2-3 inches. You will also need a toothpick and glue. Take the strip and rub it between your fingers with the toothpick until it is wrapped almost completely around toothpick and add a drop of craft glue to the end and continue rolling through your fingers until it forms a bead. Set aside for 10 to 15 minutes (which gives you plenty of time to make more) and allow to dry. Then take string, thread, cord or elastic and bead to desired size, and voila! You have it a homemade friendship bracelet! This is a great kids project, or if they are not around, I send them to my grandchildren!

Working With Glitter

When using glitter, always have a piece of paper under your project. So when you dump the extra glitter off, you can bend the paper into a funnel shape and put the extra glitter back in the bottle. This way you do not waste a bunch of glitter.

Make Gift Tags From Christmas Cards

Recycle your Christmas cards this year by using them to make gift tags for next year. Use a template such as a circle, Christmas tree, bell or whatever shape you prefer to cut out from the card design. Punch a hole and use yarn or ribbon to attach to the gift. Almost free gift tags for next year!

Sterilize Your Sponge in the Microwave

Sponges and kitchen scrub brushes can be loaded with disease-causing viruses and bacteria. So microwave them, scientists say.

By Designer sheets from Mississippi

Editor's Note: The University of Florida Researchers recommends, making sure the sponge is very wet and microwave it for 2 minutes.

Homemade Bubbles Recipe

Directions:

Mix together and blow bubbles. Have fun.

Helping Others Resolution

Instead of the same old New Year's Resolutions, how about something different that will make you feel good as well as helping others in need. For example, place a couple of non perishable items into a box each month and when the box is full, bring it down to the food bank. Or buy an extra gallon of milk per week or month for the shelter who has children as well as adults. Or maybe donating your blood 4 times a year to the Red Cross, etc. Thanks for reading this and may God bless you.

How much rent can I afford?

I'm looking to move into a new apartment. The problem (aside from not knowing neighborhoods and wanting to get a dog), I'm not sure how to find out how much I can afford for rent. I've been told to take my either net or gross income for a month and subtract my bills, etc. for a month from it. About a year ago, I did this and I was a little in the red. Today I do this, after my rent going up almost $100 and getting a 50 cent raise at work, and I can afford nearly $200 more than the last time. HUH? What is the actual equation I need to find out what I can afford? I hope this made sense to everyone. :-)

Repairing a Net Sponge

The "poof" I use to wash myself with shower gel in the shower has come undone, and I would like to know how re-tie it as it was when I bought it. I have attempted to do so, but it ends up quite unlike it was before it came undone. The image is how it looks new.

Giant Lima Beans Seeds

Does anyone know where I can purchase the Giant Fordhook Lima beans? We use to raise them in Arkansas but can't find a Seed company that carries them anymore. Most of them has the regular Lima Bean but the one I'm searching for is about the size of a Quarter. I would like to get enough to plant in my Garden.

Stain Around a Bathtub Drain

I'm not big on cleaning, never have been, but I do clean. I've got that ground in thing going on around my bathtub drain. I can't get rid of it. I believe the tub is plastic or maybe fiberglass. I've tried Comet, that Eraser thing from Mr. Clean. I even tried that rock hard thing you have to wet down first, but it nearly made a hole in the tub. My neighbor had the same problem, but I think he left it til the day he moved. Anyone have any suggestions?
