Garage sales, Salvation Army, Goodwill all have dirt cheap supplies. Also American Science and Surplus www.sciplus.com has great stuff and the website and catalogue sound like they were written by someone from Comedy Central.

Teachers know almost everything. Why not ask your sons' teachers for some good websites - the boys can learn and have age-appropriate fun at the same time.
Don't forget Oriental Trading Company. They have a lot of great craft projects, and even issue a seperate catalog just for craft projects.
