Nice, Simple Wedding Cake

I made a cake for a good friend at work for her wedding. I wanted to make a nice cake, simple, cute and most important fast.

So I bought a wedding cake topper. I then made a 10 inch round white cake and made almond icing to frost the cake. Then with tip 2D, I made the flowers and the bottom border. Finally I added the dove cake topper. This cake was delicious and beautiful.

Painted Wine Bottle
By Rela Ann

The movie "Sideways" got you wine tasting, and even wine drinking... now what do you do with all those wine bottles that are starting to accumulate? Keep them - they are good for something. Take a look at what you can do with them with a little spray and brushstrokes.

Ingredients

  • Wine bottle (Washed and cleaned. Minimize hand/thumb marks. Dry.). Larger ones with tapered neck is best!
  • Spray paint (Flat/Semi-Flat/Satin finish recommended)
  • Textile or Acrylic Paint
  • Newspaper or any paper to protect working surface from paints.

Method/Instructions

1. Wash and dry wine bottle to make sure you have a clean surface, devoid of dust which prevents good adhesion.

2. Arrange the paper to protect your working area. (Do this outside where there is good ventilation.)

3. Place the wine bottle on top of the papers. Make sure it is flat.

4. Spray the bottle (Follow the spray can instructions.). Spray one layer around, wait for a while, then paint another layer. Do this a couple of times until all outside surfaces are covered evenly. Some areas needing attention: Bottle lid area - make sure it is also covered but beware of spraying too long here as too much will make the spray paint drip! Bottle bottom - that can be an easily-missed area specially if your paper is crumpled.

5. Let dry.

6. When dry, plan the design that will be painted on the bottle surface.

7. Implement design with textile or acrylic paint.

Using Rit Dye to Keep Things Looking New

I found a great way to make my clothing have a new look. I use the Rit dye to change the color of faded or to alter the color of clothing. I even recently dyed my white towels that were still plush, but didn't have that crisp white look anymore. I used a fraction of the purple dye to make a soft lavender. They came out beautiful.

I also looked online for 'recipes' for custom dye colors, using the basic colors found at the store, to make colors such as aqua and apricot. I even thought of dying my white sheets a pretty color to match my duvet cover. Lots of possibilities. Have fun!

Keeping a Craft Project Handy

Keep a knitting or crocheting project in a bag by the door. Grab it on the way out to the car. If you end up waiting for children or killing time any other way, you can at least get a little bit done on your project.

Try to resist the temptation to knit while you drive!

Budgeting for Adolescents

If your adolescent seems to have no idea about money and budgeting issues, set up a monthly or quarterly clothing allowance. When it's gone, that's it.

They'll quickly see that sales are worthwhile, that shopping around can pay off, and maybe they'll find that they don't need as much as they thought.

Disposable Cameras for Auto Accidents

Keep a disposable camera in your glove compartment. If you're in an accident, get photos of the scene - it may help with your insurance claim.

Pantry Soup

This was a saver when we were low on groceries. We always had a variety of canned veg's on hand. You can make this soup with most anything from the pantry, except beets. Use, for example, one can each of; green beans, peas, corn, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes (can use fresh), etc. Add onion soup mix if you want and/or 2 or 3 bouillon cubes. You can add more or less of any item. You can use fresh veggies if you have them. I also put in a bit of vegetable oil of some kind to give the broth a 'stocky' look. Just heat through or until bouillon cubes are dissolved.

Groceries for a Gift

When a my birthday rolled around, one year, my Mom wanted to know what gift to get me. I had started trying to eat healthier than as usual. I suggested that she give me a gift card for a local supermarket. She was baffled, so I told her that I'd just be buying fresh fruits & veggies with it. This seemed to please her and it helped me out as well.

Saving Money on Bottled Water

Admit it - are you paying $1.25 for a bottle of water? You know the recipe - just refill the bottle. If your tap water isn't so good, get a Brita filter. Many people could save almost $20 a week on bottles of water.

Annualize Everything

When you're looking at spending and budget issues, annualize everything. For instance, are you spending $10 a day on lunch? If you bring something from home, it will cost perhaps $3. That $7 a day that you save is $35 a week, over $1500 a year.

It's a lot easier to get motivated to make small spending changes when you see the annual cost.

Don't even let me get started on the annual cost of smoking!

Early Spring Plant Starts

When you start seeds in the early spring, you need to keep them gently warmed to get the best rate of germination. The perfect gentle heat is on top of the refrigerator. Cover the trays so they won't dry out. You can stack them up if you're starting a lot of seeds.

As soon as they germinate, they'll need light, so check every day or two.

Duct Tape Residue on a Car

My friend had to quickly duct tape plastic over a broken car window, and after the rain subsided and the Florida sun baked it for a while, the tape left sticky residue on the car's paint job. Does anybody know what to use to remove the residue that will not hurt the paint finish? Thank you.

My son played in Cooperstown this week where they play on a clay field. I cannot get the red clay stains out of his baseball pants. Any suggestions? FYI, the pants can not be bleached and must be washed in cold water because they are 100% polyester.

Spreading Rash With Blisters

Right now I have this rash that is so bad. I first noticed it by having a bad itch on my back and thought it was just one spot, but it covered a large area. Then I spent about one hour in the sun on Saturday and then on Sunday. After walking for a few hours in 90+ degree weather, I came home and had a rash just like on my back but on my midsection and on small part of my rib cage.

It itches like crazy and now it's spreading! Also, little blisters are forming on top of the rash and it seems to spread when I itch. Cortisone helped at first. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I don't have health insurance until September. I am using emu oil, calamine, and antihistamines. I have a lot of essential oils, so any homemade stuff suggested would be awesome! It looks like a combination of heat rash and poison Ivy.

Kath
