Easy Picture Frame

We are new to Tennessee and my husband is big into deer and all the other wild life in our back yard. He got to choose how to decorate our den. He found a cheap picture frame and picture he wanted to hang up but the frame was gold so I went out in the back yard and collected bark from some of our native trees. This really added to his outdoor and cabin style plus we did this to the other pictures and took sticks for curtain rods and a lot of garage sale finds (other people's trash now our treasure) for other decor.

Approximate Time 15 min

Supplies:

  • glue and glue gun
  • picture frame
  • bark from yard

Instructions:

Take the bark and break to fit the frame, overlap when necessary and glue in place. Easy and simple.

Autumn Campfire

A campfire is the most beautiful site in the fall of the year. We recently went on a camping trip and enjoyed the coloration of the fire while sitting outside in lawn chairs. Watching the campfire will relax you, make you ponder on things you haven't thought of in a long time and it can be a great place to hold a conversation with your spouse or significant other! It is a nice way to end a long day of hiking, enjoying nature and being in the camping environment.

Panda Lu (Boston Terrier Bulldog)

Panda Lu is 1 1/2 years old and is a Boston Terrier Bulldog. We bought her in June of 2006 when she was 17 weeks old. My daughter and I have always wanted an "inside" dog, but DH wouldn't hear of it. We begged, pleaded and cried until he gave in; now, he loves her as much as we do.

She loves to play ball, of any kind, and the bigger the ball, the more she wants it. The neighbors' kids can't even throw a football back and forth to each other without her running from one to the other trying to get it.

Panda Lu was born with a spinal birth defect and limped a lot when she was younger. The vet told us she could eventually lose the use of her hind legs. I started mixing extra-virgin coconut oil (good for arthritis) with her food, and she stopped limping. We hope that with much love and care, she'll live a long, healthy life without being crippled. Panda Lu never meets a stranger; she loves everyone, and everyone loves her too.

Tips for Organizing Seeds and Tools

Need help organizing your seeds? When planting seeds at any time, you don't need to buy expensive planting labels. You can use popsicle sticks, tongue depressors, or window blinds cut into smaller pieces. Use a permanent marker to write what seeds or bulbs you are planting and always know where everything is.

Need help organizing gardening tools? Use an over-the-door shoe rack with pockets. Your tools fit neatly inside and you always know where they are.

Tealights For Power Outages

There are occasions when we have power outages and we use oil lamps and candles for lighting. I use T-lights (which burn 3-4 hours) in clear or frosted glass mugs I pick up at the local save-a-lot or dollar store for 'portable' lighting. They can be carried down a dark hallway or room to room with little worry they'll be blown out, leaving you standing in the dark.

Make Kids Stickers Out of Free Labels

Do you get sheets of address labels sent by nonprofits? It's easy to cut away from the labels long strips of colorful images of animals, flowers, trains, seashells and more. Then presto!

You have lots of free and fun stickers - ready to hand out to kids in classrooms, at parties or at home.

The cutting takes a few minutes, but the stickers are free - and they get delivered to you!

Buy Frugal Extras When You Shop

When you go to the grocery store, pick-up a couple of frugal extras for your pantry, or to give to your favorite charity. Stores are always having sales or specials on canned goods, and some stores like WalMart, have regular prices as low as $0.50 a can or less on certain goods. An extra dollar or two for the pantry or charity is not cost prohibitive, and can go a long way to helping out those in need. You won't miss that extra dollar or two, and a can of beans, looks like a steak, to the truly needy!

Hairspray for Setting Chalk on Paper

This tip is for making a picture with chalk on paper. When finished, spray with cheap hairspray. The hairspray puts a fine coat of lacquer on the paper and you won't get chalk dust all over.

Hide Labeling on Kids Belongings

The best plan is to always write kids names on the inside of their belongings. Displaying the name on the outside could be an invitation for trouble, should your child assume an unfamiliar person knows him/her just because this person calls him/her by name.

Have a Dollar Store Budget

Even when I go to the dollar store, (or should I say, especially when I go to the dollar store) I make sure I count the items in my basket to make sure I am within my budgeted amount. It's so easy to go over in a place like that! I knew someone who called it the $30 store, because she always spent $30 every time she went in for one item!

Leftover Soup

Save leftover veggies, gravy (this works better with brown), bits of meat, (rice, noodles, pasta, even mashed potatoes), etc. into a big size freezer bag or plastic container. When it is full, it doesn't take much effort to prepare a delicious homemade soup ! Add a bay leaf and that's just about as easy as it gets!

Halloween Alternatives

What if you don't celebrate Halloween but your kids want to dress up? Or maybe you'd rather to do a bit more on the educational side rather than simply buy a costume. Here are some ideas from my school and friends:

International Day: Research your ethnic background and the national costumes associated with it, or choose a country. Our school has 24 countries and on International Day (which we do around Oct. 31) we have colorful costumes from all over, as well as a few Tom Sawyers and Little House on the Prairie costumes. Then we have a parade for parents and the upper school, singing a variety of international songs.

Reading Day: Dress up as your favorite character or author. Let other readers guess who you are!

All Saint's Day: This is, after all, November 1st. Halloween was supposed to get you ready for it. Do some research on your nameday saint or another favorite, and dress up accordingly.

Reformation Day (which is Oct. 31): what would Martin Luther or John Calvin have worn?

Dress Up As A Historical Figure: Do you have a budding composer? Get a wig and look like Beethoven! A scientist? Dress up as Madame Curie or Einstein. Studying Greek mythology at school? Go Greek. There are any number of ways to include education in some kind of dress-up fun (and if you want, you can still go trick-or-treating).

If you don't like the greed and the candy associated with trick-or-treat, try trick-or-treat for UNICEF or some other charity of your choice.

I hope these suggestions will spark your creativity. Have fun with them. You can use most of them all year round.

Review of Hand Crank Flashlights

Has anyone tried one of those flashlights that do not use batteries? They are powered by a crank handle for energy.

I've read reviews that go from wonderful to a thumbs down due to only 2 minutes of power with a lot of cranking.

Yes, it's a wonderful idea, but is it usable?

Any brands and models you would like to recommend or reject?

Thanks.

Steve's Lounge Hegewisch, IL Salad Dressing Recipe

Are there any members out there that know the recipe for the salad dressing at Steve's Lounge in Hegewisch, IL? I attended a funeral luncheon there yesterday and the tossed salad had the most delicious dressing. It was a white creamy dressing, possibly with garlic and maybe even a little sour cream? They probably make it there but I have no idea. I just loved it and would like to make at home. I live quite a ways from Hegewisch so unfortunately can't enjoy the dressing there too often. All the food there was quite good, especially the fried chicken!

Mold On Sandals

I have a pair of bejewelled indian sandals that I really like and they got wet in the rain. So, I left them out to dry before putting them back in the shoe box, but it wasn't dry enough. So weeks later, opening the box, I have found green mold growing all over the soles of the shoes, as well as the insides and basically all over. Is there any tips I can use to get rid of it, or are there any commercial products/professional cleaning services as I really like this pair of shoes? I don't want to risk getting it on my feet so maybe I should throw them away?
Thanks!

Selecting & Carving Pumpkins for Halloween
By Ellen Brown

Halloween has become a huge holiday. According to a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation, consumers spent $3.29 billion dollars on Halloween in 2005. Of that $3.29 billion, $840 million was spent on decorations-second only to Christmas in holiday home decor. Talk about frightening! Even with all newfangled lighting effects, fog machines and animatronics designed to create hair-raising effects, a carved pumpkin is still the best and least expensive way to create a haunting Halloween scene.
