What is Absinthe?

Liqueur made by maceration and distillation of leaves of wormwood (artemisia absinthium) with the addition of other bitter or aromatic plants (fennel, anise, Chinese anise, star anise, hyssop, etc.). A somewhat bitter, anise flavored liqueur, distilled from wormwood that is produced with a proof of 136 and an alcohol content of almost 70%. It is a drink that has been banned in many countries, being classified as a habitual stimulant. This liqueur has a green color that becomes a cloudy white when diluted as it is prepared for consumption. A typical procedure for dilution is to pour the absinthe over a sugar cube in a strainer and then drip water into the sugar strained solution, which turns the color from green to cloudy white.
