Pheobe (Sugar Glider)

We're not sure how old Pheobe is, but we think she's about 3 years old. She's a Sugar Glider. We bought Pheobe and her sister Ursula from a friend of mine who just didn't have the time to care for them properly.

She likes to make as much noise as she can while we're trying to sleep as Sugar Gliders are nocturnal marsupials. Pheobe and Ursula were never really handled so it's taking us a little while to earn their trust. Pheobe is coming around pretty good, but Ursula is taking a little more effort. They'll get there.

Pudgy (West Highland White Terrier)

Pudgy was 10 years old on Valentine's Day, He is a Westie (West Highland White Terrier). My dear, late husband insisted for years that he really wanted a dog. We decided on a Westie because of their sunny attitude and good health.

When I went to pick him out at the breeder's, he was in an enclosure with his two siblings. Two of them were at the fence, looking happy and wagging tails. Pudgy, standing at the back of the enclosure, rushed forward and, like a cheerleader, jumped onto his brothers' backs making a pyramid, then stood up with his paws at the top of the fence and I was hooked.

I did NOT, however, understand this was Alpha dog behavior. He's a wonderful joy-filled handful and has kept my spirits soaring through the loss of my entire family (human) and my own serious illnesses. He makes getting up in the morning worthwhile!

Pudgy likes to climb up into my lap and nap, but he also protects the entire neighborhood by making sure I know a car or jogger has just gone by. He'll play fetch for hours if I'm up to it, and if he can get hold of a sock, he's as happy as can be! (See photo of him, his favorite ball and just-claimed sock).

Here in Michigan, we get a lot of snow, and it drifts up in front of the garage door. If we can't get out the front door because of snowdrifts, we head out through the garage. One morning after it had snowed all night, I opened the garage door and the drift was taller than he was! He just stood there looking at it for a minute, and then turned his head back over his shoulder to look at me, as if to say "Do we have a 'Plan B?" Fortunately, I keep puppy pads handy in case of such emergencies, so he was able to find peace until I got the drifts cleared away.

Today's Tips:

Getting The Most From Your Warehouse Store Membership

I think we will be joining Costco soon since a friend just shared this cost saving information with me. Most people know that prescription drugs are much cheaper there and you don't have to have a membership to access this service. Just tell them at the door that you are going to the pharmacy.

Did you also know that your membership entitles you to get your tires checked for free including putting air in them? Full service gas stations are becoming more and more scarce. In some locations, if you can find one that has air, there is a charge for using the air hose. According to my friend, he recently picked up a nail in a tire causing a slow leak in it. He pulled into the Costco tire center to see if they could check and fix the tire. Here is the best part of all - the cost was zero, Nothing, Nada! He did the same thing recently and pulled into a tire store and it cost him $22.50.

That kind of savings will go far in paying for a membership. If this happens to you, hopefully you'll have your membership and can take advantage of these free services in addition to your shopping savings.

Joke: On the Island of Trid

Somewhere, there's an island named Trid. On this island, the Trids were mostly very happy. But on one end of the island, was a very tall mountain. If a Trid ever dared to climb the mountain, he didn't get very far because a giant lived on the mountain and would kick the Trid off his mountain.

One day, a Rabbi visited the island and went exploring. He was nearing the mountain, but a Trid stopped him and said, "You don't want to go up there, a giant lives there and he'll kick you off". The Rabbi thought about it and said, "Maybe I can talk to him".

So the Rabbi started up the mountain, stopping every little while to look around. He saw no sign of the giant. As he reached the top, he stopped again and looked around but didn't see the giant.

Finally, at the top of the mountain, he spied the giant sitting under a tree and the giant turned and saw the Rabbi. The Rabbi said, "Aren't you going to kick me off your mountain?" And the giant replied (you're going to love this)

"Silly Rabbi, kicks are for Trids!"

Cheap Or Free Retro Activities

It saddens me that we have come to a place in our lives where we can't live without being "connected" to everything and everyone 24 hours a day; cellphones, internet, 24 hour news channels. We don't take time to do things anymore. We want everything handed to us in compact form and ready-made, we don't want to work for anything and we need to be constantly entertained by electronics. We don't even want to get out of our car anymore to buy liquor, food or do banking. (wow I am getting old). It's sad.

ALL that being said, here is a list of cheap and mostly free activities you can do, getting back to the old ways to entertain yourselves.

List of Free or Cheap Retro Activities

  1. Play a boardgame or cards. (poker, blackjack, crazy 8's)

  2. Listen to a talk radio show or play; they still have them! University stations usually have really interesting stuff to listen to.

  3. Read the entire local or national newspaper with your family/partner over a cup of coffee and discuss its contents.

  4. Host a pot luck for friends. You can even have a theme like: Mexican, Indian, play some corresponding music!

  5. Attend a free yoga or fitness class. (You can get free gym passes or a trial yoga class in most places).

  6. Go for a walk but leave your Ipod at home. Pay attention to the scenery and people around you and appreciate your surroundings.

  7. Watch a late-night old movie on TV and make popcorn on the stove.

  8. Visit free public places like museums and libraries; take out old videos or DVDs, loan out a good book. Libraries also offer free workshops throughout the year. Some museums still have free days, check your city.

  9. Check your local travel bureau or free entertainment magazine for free activities and events in your town; such as specific festivals and free music events.

  10. Get a bunch of people together and go for a drive. Pack lunches and drinks, stop somewhere to eat. If it's wintertime, you can eat in the car.

  11. Do crafty things like paper mache, hemp bracelets, ice cube candles, perzines, baking, find an old chemistry set and play with it, sew, knit, crochet, plant seeds or re-pot plants, paint or draw..the choices are endless.

  12. Write poetry or something in your journal, the old fashioned way: with a pen and paper.

  13. In winter, go outside and make a snow-person or in summer, play marbles (yes it can be totally cheesy as adults but still fun, get on your bike and sit on the grass with friends and talk.

  14. As teenie as this is, have a sleepover with friends and watch scary movies.

  15. Have a cooking party, everyone collectively makes dinner including appetizers and dessert. Cooking is so much more fun with more people!

  16. Make homemade wine or beer. It's not that hard. The internet has DIY punk style recipes where you don't need to use all that fancy equipment!

  17. Get on the phone and call your parents or friends who live away. Most people have unlimited long distance plans these days.

  18. Play street hockey or basketball

  19. Play truth or dare (if you're younger, you might not know what this is, look it up!)

  20. Cuddle with someone you care about.
It's not that hard to come up with fun stuff to do that doesn't include using your computers, 300 channel satellite dish TV, X-Box, iPods or Blackberries. So put those away and go have some super groovy retro fun!

Set Timer to Limit Computer Time

This tip is about not wasting time on your computer. I found once I got my own computer just how easy it was to waste an entire day on my computer and not get anything else done. Now I set the kitchen timer for how ever long I want to spend time on my computer and when it goes off, I get up and leave to do other things; such as housework, take a walk, work outside (weather permitting) or whatever else needs to get done that day.

I don't go beyond what the timer was set for, as I actually leave the timer in my kitchen (it is loud enough to hear in my bedroom). So I have to get up from the computer table, go out into the kitchen and shut it off. I usually set the timer for two hours, thus giving me time to check and respond to my emails if I need to, do a little internet surfing and even play a couple of games. The only time I might go over the two hours is when I am working on my poetry; writing and rewriting. Then I do three hours.

I have found that using my timer saves me possibly wasting all day on the computer. Doing this makes my time more enjoyable on the computer and I still get my day done.

Number Socks to Match

I keep sock pairs matched so they are worn the same number of times, by numbering them when I take them out of a package. Starting with #1 on a pair, after washing simply match up the numbers.

Another thing to do with socks, tie a knot in a worn out sock and use it as a tug toy if you have a dog, lots of fun and you don't get the slobbery end when you use it. :-)

Clean Vacuum Brush Roller Bearings to Reduce Odor

For vacuum cleaners that stink, remove the brush roller and unscrew the end caps. You will find small bearings at each end and what appears to be a washer, it's not a washer it is hair that has wrapped around the brush bar and overheated creating the odor. Clean the roller bearing area a couple times a year more often if you have pets. This will get rid of that mysterious odor.

Round Top Muffins

For high rising, rounded tops on muffins like you see in the bakeries, preheat your oven to 500 degrees F. As soon as you put the muffins into the oven, decrease the temperature to whatever the recipe calls for. Remember to decrease the baking time.

This may take a bit of watching and practice but the result will be worth it. The increased temperature causes the muffins to rise quickly giving them that nice dome-shaped top.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

The social studies teacher had just finished a unit on war and peace. "How many of you," he asked, "would say you're opposed to war?" Not surprisingly, all hands went up.

The teacher asked, "who'll give us the reason for being opposed to war?"

A large, bored-looking boy in the back of the room raised his hand.

"Johnny?" The teacher said.

"I hate war," Johnny said, "because wars make history, and then some poor, innocent kid has to memorize all about it."

Coordinating Paint Colors in Different Rooms

I am trying to find a color that goes with blue/grey and just grey. I am painting three rooms, I need a color that will blend in with the other two rooms.

One room will be a blue/grey color, the other will be a grey or pewter color and the third, I have no clue and I am freaking out. Any suggestions? I do like earth tones but the room is small so I don't want anything too dark but something with appeal. Thanks.

Ideas for a Senior Ladies Brunch at Church

I am in charge of pulling together a brunch for the elderly ladies at our church to be held May 2nd. We would like a spring theme, but we need ideas on inexpensive favors to set at each seat and decorating ideas for tables, centerpieces, etc.

I would love to come up with a cute saying like I have seen on this site for mother's day, "Mother's bloom where they are planted" or birthday "Hope we can all live to be as old as Aunt Bee". But maybe centered on a Bible verse? We hope to have this become an annual event, but this is the first time we have attempted it.
