Recycled Wind Clackers

Perfect decoration for your clothes line!

Drill four holes around the edge of the lid of a peanut butter jar.

Drill a hole in the center of four liquid laundry detergent caps.

Loop two pieces of string (folded in half) through something shaped like a ring (I used a portion of a vitamin bottle cap for my hanging ring) and knot about 3 inches down.

Thread each string through the peanut butter jar lid, knotting on the underside.

Thread each strand through one laundry detergent cap and knot on the inside. I knotted the ends with a jingle bell to give my wind clacker an interesting sound.

You can also drill a hole in the middle of the peanut butter jar lid like I did. Use a bead to anchor the middle string or knot it before threading it through the hole.

Tie another bead or something else to the end of the middle string to give it a little weight. I tied a couple of jingle bells from the middle string also.

Keep Free Address Labels In Your Wallet

When charities send them, cut them into strips, cut off the artwork, and put some in your wallet. They're great for use on small forms such as raffle or door prize tickets, rebate forms, or anywhere else that a tiny name and address is required. They'll also identify things you're lending, such as dishes and utensils for a pot luck dinner, or craft equipment.

Use Safety Straps To Secure Purse While Shopping

Have a Safe Shopping Trip. Lock in your purse while shopping.

Take the safety seat belt on the shopping cart and run it through the straps on your purse and hook it. If someone tries to grab your purse, the strap will STOP them. At least for enough time for you to scream OR get Help. Happy Shopping.

Make Your Own Pads for Protecting Hardwood Floors

My dining room chairs were scratching my hardwood floors. Instead of spending $ on the stick-on felt thingys that fall off, I cut furry fabric (I used a 2 liter bottle cap as a template for cutting) and hot glued them to the feet of all my chairs.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

Yesterday a 9 year old girl was killed in our community. She had been waiting in her Grandmothers car for the school bus. When she saw the bus approach, she apparently darted out into traffic and was stuck and killed. Earlier this year, a woman was killed on her lunch hour when a car turned the wrong way down a one way street. These tragedies have prompted me to remind you of these tips:

Remind children of ALL age's proper safety rules. Set a good example and follow these rules yourself!

Drive the speed limit! Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel (as that old song goes)!

When crossing the street, PLEASE USE CROSS WALKS!

Wear light colored clothing or clothing with a reflective stripe when out walking. Carry a flashlight when escorting a child to the bus stop. Walk on the side of the road, facing on coming traffic or on the sidewalk when available.

As a driver, be even more contentious when visibility is diminished (dawn, dusk, dreary/rainy weather) I came close to hitting a man who walked out from between 2 parked cars to cross the street.

NEVER take a shortcut to save time (don't jaywalk, cross only in pedestrian crosswalks, and wait until the light prompts you it is safe to walk).

NEVER walk just because the sign says it is OK to do so. Make sure all cars (particularly those turning) see you before stepping out. Look for cars that may run a light or turn the wrong way down a one way street.

Remember how fragile the human body is compared to a 2000 lb vehicle. Better to be late than to take an unnecessary risk.

When unloading from a car-do so on the curb side of the street.

When crossing the street be sure to allow yourself enough time to do so safely. It is often difficult to judge how fast a car is moving. Better to wait until all traffic has passed than to make a fatal error in judgment.

Don't assume the car sees you! Try to make eye contact before assuming you have the right-of-way.

Be a courteous pedestrian. Walk briskly and be sure and use your manners (a friendly wave to the drive who stopped for you goes a long way!

Carry identification with you if you are out exercising or walking at lunch.

Life is fragile, handle with prayer!

Tips for Caring for a Removable Denture

Now that I have a "flipper" in my mouth (small removable denture - I had teeth with short roots, alas) - I have to take it out at night to prevent irritation. I cope with that in 2 ways - #1 I use brace wax to plug up the little gap left without my appliance overnight. #2 - I use a nice recycled small opaque cosmetic jar (mine is lilac) to keep my appliance in. It's pretty and discrete - and I keep it loosely closed to let it dry out. Remember all the old cartoons about leaving your teeth in a glass overnight? I certainly want to avoid anything remotely resembling THAT.

Oh, and P.S. - I found that I had to use an emery board to carefully file down the acrylic flipper to fit comfortably and I use denture cream to assure a tighter fit - none of which my dentist informed me of!

Make Your Own Liquid Fabric Softener

Instead of using toxic fabric softener and dryer sheets, mix 1 gallon of white vinegar with a $.99 container of hair conditioner. It is very inexpensive and works great whether you pour directly into washer in final rise cycle or use on a terry cloth for the dryer. Please recycle!

A Birthday Surprise

When I turned the big 5-0, my sister did something for my birthday that was very exciting. For this occasion, I received a large box in the mail. When I opened the box, I found not one or two large gifts, but rather 50, yes 50, much smaller, wrapped gifts. I was surprised to say the least. The gifts were not expensive by any means, but it was so much fun to open all the little ones. She made me feel very special. I thought this would be a great idea to pass on.

Stock Up After Valentine's Day

After holiday sales are a great time to shop. After Valentine's Day sales will bring many opportunities to save. Its a good time to shop for anything red or white that you can use to decorate your home. Often one can find red (or white) pillar candles at a discount. Also, any red or white wrapping paper or ribbon can be used for Christmas when that holiday arrives. Doilies are good to use under cookies on a tray. Look for them on sale at this time. In short, don't hesitate to root through sales items to find things you can use. Don't buy anything for which you don't have a use, but might need it some day. As you know, this only adds to clutter in the home.

Caring For Cut Flowers

Did you get some cut flowers? Here's a little prep work you can do to make them last longer. Using pruning sheers, make a fresh cut at the bottom of the stem. Do this under running water. Don't use scissors for this, they will crush the stems and make it harder for them them to absorb water. Strip away all leaves that will be below the water line of the vase. Those leaves will rot more quickly if you don't remove them. Make sure to clean out the vase before putting the new flowers in. Change the water once a day add 2 tablespoons of sugar to act as preservatives for your flowers.

What are your tips for caring for cut flowers? Post them below.

Dollar General Clogs

I wanted to recommend these shoes I got today at Dollar General for only $4. They are super comfy and lightweight plastic slipons. i will love to scoot them on to go outside for mail or firewood or to take out the trash. They are clog like with the old style"earth shoe" toe and are vented on top. Not the prettiest shoes on the market but HEY!

These would probably be good out in the garden too because they can be hosed off easily!

Ideas for School Children to Recycle their Paper

I am looking for ideas to recycle to paper produced by my children's school. They produce a lot of paper, but in our recycling depot is overfull and doesn't want any more paper. We need to come up with an environmentally friendly way of recycling large quantities of paper that don't use up a lot of the student's time. The paper can be shredded or in sheets. All ideas will be most welcome.

8 Year Old Is Now Afraid of Sleeping Alone

We have a challenge we can't seem to solve. About 4 months ago our 8yr became unable to sleep alone. He says he is scared. He started to try to get in our bed which we allowed for a few nights since it was a new problem. We realized we couldn't allow it permanently and refused to let him in, so then he started to sleep on the floor next to the bed and he continues to do so every night.

He has never been a good sleeper, always talking in his sleep, having bad dreams but he did at least sleep in his own room and bed. If he did have a bad dream, he would come to our room and I would take him back to his, cuddle him, pray, tuck him back in and all would be fine. I do sleep in his room when he is sick because his room is at the opposite end of the house and I want him to feel that I am near in case he needs help.

There are no other alternatives for the location of his room and I know he is upset that we are on opposite ends but it's always been that way. I just can't bear to lock him out. Also I often sleep on the couch because my husband and I both have acute health problems and we disturb each other. When I sleep on the couch, I am just outside my son's door yet he still won't stay in his room. He'll sleep on the floor next to the couch. I could survive that but he wakes me up off and on during the night. I've run out of ideas to try.

We've done the night lights, in fact, three of them at once, talking about it, praying, tucking him in with his many stuffed animals, snuggling, a snack before bed, reading wonderful cheery books. He says he's afraid of everything such as the dark, someone breaking in, a fire with our wood stove, and something scary he saw in a movie. We are careful about movies that are not appropriate and we don't have TV.

He has a very high reading and comprehension ability and on occasion he browses the newspaper when it is on the kitchen table. That has plenty of scary stuff. If he hears some thing on the radio he picks up on it right away. He keeps putting on all the lights. I asked him to draw a picture of the things he is afraid of but he says he will just color the paper black. Other than this he is a very happy go lucky, cheerful, high energy, social, extremely talkative, bright little boy with an impossible strong will.

He is a difficult child in that he wants to control everything and we are very often in a power struggle. We work very hard to be consistent with him but he never gives up. I thought he could be manipulating us but I truly believe he is afraid. I am so exhausted I'm at my wits end. Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

Fried Eggplant Was Too Oily

I just fried-up some eggplants for the 1st time. They soaked-up the oil like sponges. I put down some newspaper, on top of that a whole bunch of Scott towels, then the eggplants. They drenched everything with oil, and were still so greasy, they were not edible. I also made sure to drain the water out of my eggplants overnight.
Any suggestions?

Painful Pressure in the Back of the Head

My boyfriend has anxiety disorder, and for the last few months, he has been having pressure in the back of his head. He says it feels like his head is being squeezed in a vice, or a tightly wrapped bandage on his head. It makes his anxiety much worse, and he always feels like going to the ER for this. He has been there 2 times last month in the same week for this, and the doctors have done numerous tests on him, and everything came out fine. What can this be, and how can he get rid of this?

Previously House Broken Dog Has Started Pooping in the House

I have a 3 year old pup that NEVER pooped inside the house unless she was sick and we recently moved in (in the past 6 months) with my partner and her dog. Her 2 year old pup has taught my 3 year old good girl pup to POOP in the house.

Her dog just never got trained and we've tried everything short of crating her (my partner WON'T). I don't know what to do, my girl never did such things and now she seems to think it's okay even though they BOTH get in trouble when they go in the house. HELP!

My partner has a Cairn Terrier and I have a 1/2 Spitz, 1/2 Border Collie. I love these girls but I'm at wits end with them. Any ideas for training the other pup and getting mine to stop? I've even brought myself to diaper the little one in order to make her STOP. Is it too late for training?

Atkins Diet Has Stopped Working

I am trying to loose weight, I've been doing the Atkins diet. At first it was going well I lost 18lbs in four weeks. I walk on my treadmill at least 5 times a week for 45 min, I have not cheated one time. For some reason the weight loss has stopped, and to make things worse I gained two pounds!

I'm so upset but I'm not ready to give up! I have gotten so big it's not even funny, I still need to loose at least 60lbs, so if anyone has any advise I would love to hear it. I really want to have a baby but I don't want to until I loose this weight so any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Training an Adult Dog Adopted From a Shelter

I just got a German Shepherd/Husky from the local animal shelter. She is less than two years old. I was actually looking for a puppy, but saw this dog and just fell in love with her. So I adopted the dog but am waiting for the animal society to finish with the sterilization and inspection before they hand her over. I can't wait so excited.

I just have a few questions and due to work, can't get to shelter for two days. How difficult is it gonna be to train her now, given how old she is? She did seem well mannered but silly me didn't ask about her history at the time (I've made a list now for when I go back). I'm nervous or excited but just don't know what exactly to expect. Please help, I wanna be prepared and make her feel at home when she arrives
