Possum the Cat

Possum is 2 years old. He was a gift for my kids from my dad. Possum likes to chase our big dog, Oreo and go down the slide on my kid's swingset.

Possum likes to sun himself on the roof of my car.

Today's Tips:

Apply for Financial Aid Early

If you are a loved one is going to college this fall, apply for financial aid as early as possible. The amount of aid you get is based on your need level, fund availability, and the date your application process is completed. It pays to be on top of it. File your financial aid application as soon as you file your taxes. You should have all the paperwork you need in February.

Chocolate Scented Playdough

  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup boiling water
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine flour, cocoa powder, salt and cream of tartar. Add vegetable oil and boiling water and mix well. Cook, stirring frequently, until mixture forms a soft dough. Remove from heat and let cool. When mixture has cooled, continue to knead with your hands for a few minutes. Store mixture in an airtight container. Kids will enjoy creating shapes and characters with this sweet-smelling playdough! It can not hurt the kids if they taste it. Makes 2 cups.

Send Real Cards Instead Of E-Cards

Last week was Valentine's Day. I received several email cards, but not one real "put my hands on" card in the mail box, which made me to think about email causing us to receive less hand written cards and what ever happened to letters. I did a search on Google.com typing in inexpensive writing paper and cards, and was surprised to see all the different options out there to get some inexpensive writing materials. I have also picked up cards and paper at garage sales for next to nothing. Let's bring back more hand written cards and letters, it doesn't even have to be a holiday or special occasion, to drop a handwritten note in the mail for someone to have the joy of knowing you thought of them. I have letters and cards I have saved over the years in a rather large hatbox. When I have a day when I am missing my out of town family and friends, I get the hatbox down and read the cards and letters again. I watch for cards on sale when I shop. Next time you think about emailing a card or letter, get out one of your nicest pens and hand write it instead.

Use Air Cleaners Instead Of Allergy Medication

For allergy sufferers, I find that air cleaners really help me. I have one in the bedroom and one in the living room. Better than piling on the meds!

Chill Your Jello Mold

Place your jello mold in fridge to chill before adding the jello mixture. This will keep the "skin" off the mold.

Homemade Parvo Treatment

If your puppy has parvo, make it swallow raw eggs 3-4 times a day. You may have to force them down their throat, I know this sounds mean, but it is for their own good. The raw eggs provide them nutrition and they can't throw them up. It has worked for me and my family.

Toothpaste For Blood Stains

Colgate toothpaste removes blood stains from cotton material even after it has dried. Use before you wash and dry. It even smells good.

Removing Coconut Meat - Fresh Coconut Driving You Nuts?

After cracking a coconut open and draining the liquid, bake the two halves in a 400 degree F oven for 25-30 minutes. The fresh coconut meat will come out very easy with a little help from a soup spoon. And your kitchen will have a tropical scent!

H.E. Detergent

If you have one of those new front loading, low water use washing machines, the repairman told me that I should be using a H.E. (high efficiency) detergent. It causes less suds than the regular detergent, which with the smaller amount of water doesn't totally remove in the rinse cycle. if this has happened to you (a dishwasher works the same way) use 2/3 cup of dishwasher detergent and place it in the front loading area and just run the washer.

Shredded Paper Instead Of Packing Peanuts

To prevent the use of styrofoam peanuts (don't you hate those things flying around when you open a box), I use the paper in my shredder. I place it in a Walmart/plastic bag and use as packing material. You can squish it around about anything to protect from movement. The receiver is grateful as no peanuts or loose shredded paper to deal with, all is contained in bag. Excellent for fragile shipping. I always write "PLEASE RECYCLE" on the outside of the bags so they will do the same or maybe save for later use.

Duct Tape on a Polyester Graduation Robe

I put duct tape on a 100% polyester graduation robe and now there is the residue left on it. It's all over the bottom and the sleeves. The tag says "Do Not Wash and Do Not Dry Clean" and I have no idea how to get it off. (the robe isn't mine!) If you could help, I would appreciate it.
