What is a Substrate?

The physical material upon which a photovoltaic cell is applied.

The word substrate can mean the following:

  • Substrate (biochemistry), a molecule which is acted upon by an enzyme
  • Substrate (printing), the base material that images will be printed onto.
  • Wafer (electronics), in the semiconductor industry, a wafer of material, normally a single crystal, upon which semiconductor devices can be fabricated
  • Substrate, in biology, a natural environment in which an organism lives
  • Neural substrate, in neuroscience, the set of brain structures that underlies a specific behavior or psychological state
  • Substratum, in linguistics, refers to linguistic influences that are transmitted from the language originally spoken in a given region into a new language; see also language shift
  • Substrate, in plating, a metal which is plated with another metal which has different physical properties
  • Substrate, in construction, a surface to which a substance is adhered
