I have a big event coming up on May 26 and I am in need of a fast way to lose some extra pounds. I don't have lots of time for planning and exercising. I need something that will work fast but within a budget friendly neighborhood. Thanks!

I have found that if you stay off processed foods (pre packaged) you loos weight quite quickly. You should also drink lots of water, for one it's good for you and also makes you feel full. It's healthier to make meals from scratch and in the long run so much cheaper. Our 6 year old even asks when grocery shopping if such and such is processed food. He loves salads, veggies, mac and cheese, all these I make from scratch. (hint for water: flavor it with lemon or lime juice)

Hope this helps. Good luck:)

Ok, let me start out by saying that you won't believe me. It's called the Potato Diet and you have to each 3-4 pounds of UNPEELED potatoes every day. You must eat the skins of the potatoes.

Boiled, mashed, roasted, baked. But no sweet potatoes or yams. No butter or oil, catsup, nothing. I use regular baking potatoes and I've even used those delicious Yukon Gold potatoes. I use butter buds or fat free Ranch Dressing to moisten them up before I eat them.

Here's the payoff - you lose one pound, per day you're on the diet. I know. I KNOW. But it works. However - big however - the longest I've ever been able to stay on the diet for 8 days and I lost 8 pounds. I've never been able to go longer than that. I couldn't take another potato into my mouth after 8 days of the diet.

The diet is around 30 years old. I don't even remember all of the details. It said something like have a 'regular' breakfast, but never specified what that meant so I'd eat an apple for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, 3-4 lbs. of potatoes per meal, unpeeled, eat the skins. It's a hard diet to stay on even if you love potatoes.

The diet said once a week you could have fried potatoes, but I've never once done that. There were no details as to how much you could have on the fried potatoes. It works. I don't know how, but it does. Yes, I know about the carbohydrate uproar, but it does work. But trust me, you will get sick of eating potatoes.

But I have found that when I do the diet (for as long as I can) it kind of gets me into the mind set of watching what I eat and I can ease into a diet much easier. I've even used instant mashed potatoes, but it's a big, big bowl of mashed potatoes. You are never, ever hungry on this diet. Never. Tried and true, good luck to you whatever you do!

Have a wonderful time at your event! And you know what? Whether you lose weight or not, have a terrific time!! Wear something beautiful that you really, really feel beautiful in, whether you lose weight or not. Your natural beauty will shine from within and you will be the belle of the ball! God bless you!

The only way I could lose weight was doing the south beach diet. I lost 18 pounds in 3 weeks! I know doesn't sounds too healthy but it worked!

I agree with carolb. Stay away from carbs and don't eat anything with sugar in it. You can also lose water weight fast, but it won't be permanent, by not eating anything with salt in it until you get to the event. Walking every day will also help. Good luck.

Well, for me I find when I don't eat starches/ carbs I can shed pounds. So I lay off potatoes, bread, pastries, of course, pasta, chips, crackers, etc. Mainly eat protein (meat/fish) and veggies and fruit, and yogurt, nuts, cheese, etc.

Request: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

Archived on 04/21/2009

I am trying to lose weight for my 5 year anniversary. I need to lose about 30 pounds in 4 months. I do exercise, I go to a place like Curves and have been going about 6 months now and I have not lost more than 5 pounds. I would like to finally get in good shape. My height is 5 feet and I weigh 160 pounds. I am a female. I am not looking for a fad diet or anything, but would like something that works quickly. I don't have money to spend on anything like special foods, etc. One last thing is that I do not have access to a computer on a regular basis so I can't join any online groups. Thank you in advance for your help.

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

Well, as you now know, quick weight loss is ultimately unhealthy. So please reconsider. But, if you must, it can help if you eat nothing but all-natural baby food and distilled water for three days out of each week. You will still be getting nutrition, without added sugars, sodium, etc. But as always, moderation is key (i.e. don't eat five jars of baby food for each meal). (05/05/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

Start walking at least an hour a day at a 4mph (at least) pace along with your workout plan, which gave you the start. You need to keep revving your metabolism. Cut out anything that has white flour and white sugar in it. Cut out sweets and candy. Worked for me. (05/05/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

I have never been on a diet (except for changing to a healthy one). I don't know a quick way really to lose weight. But I do know how to lose weight and keep it off. When I was a child we always ate small portions. Could have more if we wanted but small was always enough. I also eat morning, afternoon, and evening snacks. I am 68 yrs. now. I'm not skinny like I was when I was young. But I'm not overweight either. I guess what I am trying to say is reduce size of portions. Eat healthy food (plus a small portion of a treat every day). I am also healthy. No arthritis, diabetes, etc. (05/05/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

Do you just want to lose weight for a reunion, or are you hoping to make a lifestyle change? Because the first is really quite easy- relatively speaking while the second is tough. I lost 40 pounds by eating healthy meals, watching my portion control (super sizing was no longer an option) and walking, walking, walking every day. Didn't lose the weight over night, but then, didn't put it on over night either. (05/05/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

I had the same problem - couldn't lose weight no matter what. I was a good bit heavier than you though and admit that yes, I started with a 'popular weight loss program' by purchasing the program foods to jump-start my weight. I knew when I started that I'd only be able to afford the first six weeks, so I've been trying to duplicate the program myself since. I do still rely on frozen foods, but I simply find that to be easier for me than to cook and figure out the serving portions and calories. I'll get to that one day but for now I buy the lower cal/fat frozen meals like Lean Cuisine, Smart Choice, Cedarlane, etc. I've lost 25 pounds in just over 2 months and I am continuing to lose. Here's what I am doing.

Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds tapes - I have several, try to do one every day and switch them up. I HATED to exercise but now I rarely miss a day and I actually enjoy it! I think getting my heart rate up doing an aerobic workout has been critical to my success so far and I feel so much stronger and healthier.

Big keys for me - 1) I switched to lower fat product options (but not fat free - yuck!) and, 2) I now carefully watch my portions by checking the packages and following the product serving sizes religiously, 3) I only drink diet soda, coffee and tea sweetened with Splenda, and a lot of water ' among other things, I think it helps to flush out the sodium.

I also eat about every 2 to 3 hours, 6 times a day. I think this is another key to my success because my metabolism was shot from NOT eating before (to try to lose weight) and I discovered to get my metabolism up and burn off calories, I had to eat, so now I eat! But remember, I watch the serving sizes now. I always, without fail eat breakfast every day now - usually Kashi cereal with 1% milk or light soy milk, low fat Nutri-Grain Eggo waffles, low fat pancakes, Lean Pocket breakfast sandwich, low fat muffin and sometimes adding fruit - I think it usually works out to be about 200 to 250 calories. I eat a low fat yogurt for a mid-morning snack everyday.

For lunch it's usually a sandwich, veggie burger on a whole grain bun, personal size pizza, or a frozen meal at about 250 to 300 calories, always adding a good size mixed garden salad with a lower fat dressing option. I have an afternoon snack of baked Tostitos with salsa, low fat microwave popcorn, pretzels, a piece of fruit, one of those 100-calorie snack packs or maybe another yogurt - again, watching the package serving size.

Then dinner is usually any frozen dinner in about the 300 or so calorie range, with a large side of steamed veggies - squash, carrots, frozen broccoli, California mix, green beans or a stir-fry mix. I have continued to use salt and pepper and real butter for seasoning (on my veggies) but lighter on the salt now and very thinly sliced pieces of butter. My last snack in the evening is usually some kind of sweet, dessert type of treat - 100-calorie pack of cookies, low fat cheesecake or low fat cake with milk - or else another snack like the afternoon snacks. It all averages out to be about 1500 calories a day.

I still eat out on occasion but try to make better choices. If I do indulge, I do a more intense workout or reduce my calories at the other meals/snacks that day. I find the only time I'm hungry is when it's time to eat a meal or snack anyway, I haven't felt deprived of anything, and I'm continuing to lose weight so - hope this helps you too! (05/05/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

I also have Leslie Sansone's walk away the pounds, and have been doing this for 1 week. It doesn't sound like it works, but I can feel my muscles getting tighter. I love her program, and will be getting her get fit and firm video soon. My sister and I talk everyday online and keep each other motivated, we will say "going to exercise at 8" and we both have the same video and work out at 8. It helps to have a workout and weight loss buddy. (05/06/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

Dr. Gott, a syndicated columnist who makes lots of good sense, suggests his no flour, no sugar diet. By eliminating all foods whose first few listed ingredients include any kind of flour or sugar such as lactose, sucrose or glucose you will lose weight. You will still get enough carbs from other sources to be safe. I would further recommend that you use lots of fruits and vegetables and that any grain you eat be whole grain. It would help to cut down on fat consumption as well because the body can take in those calories very readily. (05/06/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

I agree with those suggesting a lifestyle change, rather than trying to lose weight for a specific occasion. You could probably do a 'fast fix' but it probably won't stick. Weightwatchers teaches you that you need to change your diet and exercise routine for life if you want the results to last. I know it's tough- I have been there- but Best of Luck. (05/08/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

This worked for me when absolutely nothing else ever did: Eat only at the table, without TV or a book or anything at all going on besides eating. No eating in front of the TV, or in bed, or any place but at the table. I saw this suggestion in a book and I knew it was going to work for me, since I eat for fun, out of habit, when sitting on my spot on the sofa with TV on and book in lap. I really, really miss doing that (this was very hard for me to do), but I have lost 10 pounds in six weeks. Good luck. Eat healthy and exercise. No fast food! (05/08/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

One reason, a lot of people can't seem to lose weight is by having excess candida in their bodies (yeast overgrowth). There is an excellent diet to follow in a book called Lifeforce. You can do a google search and get the diet free. I wish you the best of luck. I am trying to lose weight as well, but instead of just going on a diet, I want to make a healthy lifestyle change. You might also want to look into detoxification for your body. But beware of the people trying to sell you the expensive vitamins and supplements they say you need for it to work. You don't have to have them. You can detox, by eating lots of fruits, vegetables, and lots of water. You will start having more energy, once you rid your body of the chemicals. I have been getting detoxification books at the library. I have even found some books in the cookbook section. (05/12/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

Sherie - Shaklee makes a formula called OptiFlora (actually a system) and a supplement called Citriboost, they both contain prebiotic and probiotic cultures (like in yogurt) that help the digestive system regain "normal control" from Candida. That nasty yeast also contributes to stinky feet, behavioral/eating problems in young kids, and all sorts of other stuff! My boys (including DH)are currently on it, and we have relieved a lot of bloatedness and other issues. It builds up due to high sugar processed foods and constant use of antibiotics. Check it out at www.shaklee.com under nutrition. (05/12/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

Only eat when you're actually physically hungry (not mad, sad, glad or noticing it's meal time according to the clock, etc.) and quit when you are full. Then don't eat again until you are actually physically hungry again. I know this sounds too simple and common sense but if you can follow this advice, you will melt away to your proper weight and not have trouble staying there. When I started this, I discovered that, although I like to eat first thing in the morning, I wasn't physically hungry then if I had eaten after 5 pm or so the night before. So I quit eating after 5 pm so I could be ready for breakfast when I got up. Trust me - this really works and it doesn't even matter what you eat. Just as long as you only eat when hungry and quit when politely full. (05/15/2006)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

There is no quick weight loss treatment. I sure wish there was for I too would join it. I struggle with my weight also and am trying to lose it. I too am tired of being heavy. I found for myself that joining curves weight loss center helped me. I went every day for 2 months and have lost 16 pounds. It is a gradual thing. It didn't go on in 4 weeks and it won't come off that quickly either. Drinking lots of water and eating fresh veggies like mini carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and fresh fruits too (apples help fill you up), all fruits are good things to eat if they are fresh. Drinking a (8 oz) glass of water 1/2 hour before meals will help fill you up. I know it's hard but keep a stiff upper lip. You can do it but you have to want to make sacrifices (no junk food), plenty of exercise, eat healthy etc. in order for this to happen. Good luck. (08/01/2007)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

I started a diet by drinking water. Before you eat, drink an 8 to 10 oz. glass of water. While eating, drink another 8 to 10 oz. glass of water. After eating, drink another 8 to 10 oz. glass of water. You do not have to count calories, watch carbs, etc. Eat everything you do now, only drink the water as stated above. If you must have a dessert, start the water drinking over. This is the best diet I have ever tried, and I have tried them all. I was able to lose nine pounds a month. Try this and good luck to you! (08/01/2007)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

I'm in the same boat as you all. I've found that recording what you eat everyday is a great way to start. Then you can see the choices you are making and possibly correct them. Also, most people mistake thirst for hunger. Drink lots of water. Also, eat slowly. Stop when you think you are full and wait ten minutes. If you're still hungry, get a little more to eat. Try to eat fruits and veggies first before the meal, that way you'll avoid eating less fat. This combination helped me to lose 8 lbs in 2 months. Best of luck! You can do anything you put your mind to! =) (04/29/2008)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

Well, I have lost weight by drinking hot lemon water. Only use freshly squeezed lemons and hot water, put like juice from one lemon and drink like that plain. It works, trust me. Also eat 2 eggs a day, hard boiled. And also exercising. At 5am I go on a walk for like an hour. Eat one hard boiled egg with my hot lemon water and a bowl of oatmeal with a banana. Lunch, I do a quick 30 minute walk down to subway and have a soup. Walk back to work. I also always try to sneak in an exercise, like walk up a flight of stairs instead of taking the escalator or elevator. Dinner is always chicken breast with scoop of brown rice and tall glass of ice cold water and tall glass of cranberry juice, and then I do a light swim. It's very refreshing to drink a hot cup of lemon water when I'm done steaming off in a hot shower. I have done this for 2 months straight and have lost 20 pounds. You can alternate your meals, like asparagus and chicken breast, or even salmon with a scoop of brown rice. But never forget to do the hot lemon water. Good luck to you and take care! Warm wishes and love. (05/16/2008)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

Hey guys, this is big girl who about one year ago, came on here saying I weighed between 185 & 190, but I actually weighed 198. Now one year has passed & I weigh 170 and am still loosing. I want to tell all of you that don't think its possible, it is =] Just keep positive thoughts, think about all the good things about your self. But anyway I want to tell you how I lost weight. I'm not gonna lie. I have been at 170 for quite a few months now, but I kind of stopped trying because I started to like myself where I was. Now I want to lose more, lol.

Within maybe 5 months I lost 28lbs. All I did was stopped drinking soda & replaced it with water. Then my dad had to do this program where you had to walk every night for 2 months for a half hour. I did that for about 3 weeks & just gradually started jogging (not running, jogging, lol). I have to tell you that I absolutely hated jogging. Because of my asthma it tired me out. I began to like it the more I did it. Now I try to take a jog every night & each time I get a little farther. Guess what? It also helped my asthma. I can do more with out getting out of wind so fast.

So my advice to those who want to lose weight. Start out by drinking a lot of water. Try some activities like I did. Walking, and maybe gradually working your self up to a light jog. =] Trust me it works. I realized I was losing weight when people kept asking me about it. They especially noticed it in my face. I went from a size 17 pants to a size 13. I have to laugh because at the beginning of the school year I bought a pair of these cute light blue jeans & they fit, actually were a bit tight. Now when I stick them on, they drop to my ankles. It makes me feel good. If you try what I did, you will get results, and it will make you feel good too. =] Good luck. (07/30/2008)

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight

I have never been a person that has been heavy or really overweight. I'm 5'9 and at my smallest weighed 128lbs and at my heaviest weighed 170. The weight increase happened for about a year before I noticed it and by then I had become so comfortable with my weight and with my life that I didn't care. When I finally stepped on the scale and saw 170 I cried. I could see why I hadn't been called back for modeling jobs lately. That's when I decided to get working on my body again.

I found that walking (best to do with someone because if you're talking, you're not paying attention to how far you're walking). Eating less fast food, like half as much because I still like a big mac every now and then, and drinking more juices and water instead of soda. In the last two months I have gone down from 170 to 148. I feel great and hopefully that works for you. (02/19/2009)

Please reconsider the "fast fixes" because they are detrimental to your health and can lead to malnutrition! Exercise and moderate carb levels are best, stick with whole grains, fruits, and veggies! Check out the Glycemic Index at www.shaklee.net under Weight Management. All the info and menus are free!

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight 05/01/2006
Doing it for yourself is one thing, doing it for money is another. Health factors must come into mind. Exercise, low carb diet (unless you have low blood sugar, which should be checked before EVERY diet), counting calories is good, drink lots of water before meals. Ice cold is better, since it takes the body to burn calories to warm the water. Consult your doctor before this "task" your taking on. JMO

If you really want to lose weight then do so while incorporating good health. Eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies and stay away from processed, dead food. The weight will come off without effort and you will be feeding your body with nutrition. If you have a juicer, start juicing veggies. Delicious and nutritious and cleansing to your body. Best of luck to you!

My son was dieting with a group from work. I decided to go along with him and lose some weight myself. He lost 25 #'s, and I lost 26 #'s in just 3 weeks! I asked my doctor first about our diet, and he agreed that it was healthy. All we did was stop eating anything with starch or sugar. No breads, pasta, rice, corn, etc. It's been a year since the diet, and we've kept the weight off, even though we're back to eating everything we cut out! Try it.

RE: Quick Ways to Lose Weight 05/02/2006
Whatever you do make sure to drink plain water all day long. Try to drink at least 2 qt. or work you way up to it. Do not drink caffeine drinks. It will deplete your water supply your body needs especially the liver. The average body loses 8 to 12 cups of water a day. Water makes up 70% of our bodies and 75 percent of our brain, playing a vital role in the proper functioning of the body, and making it an essential part of a healthy diet. Drinking water also forces fat to be used as fuel, making it one of the main keys to success in shedding any extra pounds.

And, without adequate water, kidneys are unable to function properly - prompting the liver to pick up the slack. This causes additional problems for dieters because the liver cannot metabolize stored fat as energy, resulting in more fat being stored in the body. Furthermore, water effectively suppresses appetites, aids in proper digestion, and acts as one of the vehicles for circulating nutrients and oxygen through the body, as well as assisting the body in eliminating waste. Water lubricates joints, protects organs, helps maintain a normal body temperature, and is absolutely necessary for exercise, and even day-to-day performance. With this in mind, it's easy to understand why drinking enough water - a minimum of TEN 8-oz. glasses a day, ever day - is perhaps the single most important step in determining diet and fitness success. If the liver does not get enough good food and water, it becomes sick. PLEASE, FOR YOUR OWN HEALTH, KEEP DRINKING WATER FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

Don't do this for more than a couple of weeks. It's tough, but it will work.

Breakfast: 1 small bowl of cereal with low fat milk, no sugar

Lunch: 1 entire bag of frozen vegetables (boiled & drained) with a little parmesan cheese sprinkled on. One piece of fruit.

Dinner: same as lunch.

No sweets or snacks of any kind. Take vitamins while you do this.

Maintenance: Continue eating breakfast & lunch as above, never snack and eat a sensible small dinner every night with no second helpings. As much as you can, avoid red meat, cheese and sweets.

Good luck!
