Vinyl Flooring For Table Top

This is a piece of vinyl flooring left from a project. I needed something to jazz up my table top to match my kitchen. I painted the wrong side of the vinyl, then cut out some pieces of fabric and decoupaged them on. After drying overnight, I put 3 coats of clear spray paint on. Table cloths seemed to always get pulled askew. Not so with this. However, about a year ago, my table mat became a rug and it's holding up great as such :0)

Craft: Easy Craft Stick Ornaments

Kids will enjoy making these cute craft stick ornaments that are so quick and easy to make. They are great to tie on packages too.

Approximate Time: About 30 minutes

Supplies:

  • jumbo craft stick
  • white acrylic paint
  • black acrylic paint
  • orange acrylic paint
  • paint brush
  • black chenille stem
  • scrap of ribbon or fabric
  • craft glue
  • gold thread or thin ribbon
  • 3 craft sticks
  • moveable eyes
  • red pom pom
  • green craft foam or construction paper
  • small red beads
  • scissors
  • scrap of ribbon or fabric

Instructions:

For snowman: paint top 1 inch portion of jumbo craft stick black for hat and let dry. Paint remainder of stick white and let dry. Dip the handle end of a small paint brush into black paint and dot on the eyes, mouth, and buttons down his "belly." Using a small paint brush and orange paint, paint on a carrot-shaped nose. Cut a piece of black chenille stem about 1 1/4 inches long and glue on to form the hat brim. Tie a piece of ribbon or fabric just below face to form a scarf. Glue in place. Make a small hole in top of "hat" and thread a piece of gold thread or piece of thin ribbon through the hole to form a hanger.

For reindeer: glue 2 craft sticks into a V shape. Glue the other craft stick horizontally over the top of the "V" about 1 inch down from the top of the "V." Glue a red pom pom at the point of the "V" to form the nose. Glue two wiggly eyes just below the horizontal stick. Cut holly leaves from green fun foam or construction paper and glue to center of horizontal stick. Glue red beads in the middle of the leaves to look like holly berries. Glue a scrap of ribbon or fabric to the back of the horizontal stick to form a hanger.

Today's Tips:

The Norfolk Pine - A Perfect Living Tree for the Holidays
By Ellen Brown

If you're looking for the perfect potted Christmas tree, consider the Norfolk Pine. They have soft, compact needles, a naturally symmetrical shape and they come in a variety of sizes-small enough for a table-top display in the kitchen or hall, or large enough to be the focal point of a large room. Best of all, they are easy to grow, and make a beautiful indoor tree all year long.

Secrets to Success

Growing any plant successfully requires meeting its needs. Generally speaking, Norfolk Pines are easy to grow and are known to be fairly forgiving of less than ideal growing conditions.

Temperature: They will not survive a harsh winter outdoors, but despite the fact that the Norfolk Pine hails from the South Pacific, it isn't terribly picky about temperature. Temperatures on their native Norfolk Island are in the temperate 65-75ºF range (summer) and 43-50ºF (winter), but these pines grow best on the cooler side of the range. Optimum daytime temperatures from spring to early autumn are in the 60-65ºF range, with somewhat cooler temperatures (not below 50ºF) at night. In the winter, they prefer temperatures around 50ºF (never below 40ºF).

Light: These pines are known to be tolerant of low light conditions, but prefer the bright, indirect or filtered light of a southern exposure. They will survive, but not thrive for a few years in low artificial light conditions (incandescent or fluorescent lighting in a home or office setting) provided they receive at least 16 hours of light per day. Because this plant has the tendency to bend toward the light, turn it often to maintain symmetrical growth.

Water: During the active growing period (spring to autumn) pines should be watered regularly to keep soil thoroughly moist but not saturated. In the summer, soil should not be allowed to dry out. In the winter, water sparingly after soil has been allowed to dry out. Many experts recommend using rain water that has been allowed to sit (outgas) for 24 hours when misting or watering Norfolk Pines. This is good advice if you have hard water, as lime will mark the tender needles.

Feeding: These are slow growing evergreens so don't expect to see big growth spurts from your Norfolk Pine. In the wild, they grow up to 200 ft. tall, but when kept as a houseplant, they will reach a maximum height somewhere around 5 ft. Feed them every two to three weeks during the active season with a soluble house plant food, and back off the fertilizer in the winter until new growth appears again in spring.

Humidity: Keeping the humidity levels at optimal levels is probably the most challenging aspect of caring for Norfolk Pines. They are one of the few types of houseplants that actually prefer to be misted with cool water. This becomes especially important in cold climates, where indoor air becomes dry during winter heating. Lack of sufficient humidity will cause the tips of their branches to turn brown and needles to drop off. This is important because once the tips of the branches turn brown, growth will stop from that point. Once the needles fall off, they don't grow back. Mist them regularly with cool water (especially in winter). If the air in your home is dry, try increasing the humidity around your Norfolk Pine by setting the pot in a shallow tray filled with water and pebbles. You can also use an air humidifier or if you keep fish, place it in the room near your aquarium.

Pruning: Any time you prune a Norfolk Pine, keep in mind that you will stop growth at the point of pruning. For this reason, only prune when you need to remove dead branches or brown tips. When left to grow in their natural state, Norfolk Pines will naturally shed some of their lower branches as they grow. Increasing the humidity will slow this process, but expect to see your pine shed a few branches over time.

Repotting: Keeping your pine root bound will restrict its growth and keep it to a manageable size. Still, Norfolk Pines should be repotted every 3-4 years in the spring. Use a loam-based commercial potting soil, or a home-made mix with plenty of drainage.

Propagation: Seeds can be sown in the spring, but Norfolk Pines are difficult to propagate and take a long time to reach a transplantable size. It is best to buy young plants.

Norfolk Pine
Keep the decorations small and lightweight. To avoid stressing the plant, keep an eye on soil moisture and make sure to remove any ornaments quickly after the holidays.

Signs of Trouble

Brown tips on the ends of branches and excessive needle loss are probably signaling a lack of moisture. Make sure soil is kept moist, but not saturated and increase humidity around the plant with frequent mists of cool water. Plants that have too much water will exhibit yellow or brown clumps of needles that fall off with the slightest amount of movement. Back off on watering and check to see that the pot has enough drainage.

Norfolk Pine pests include mealy bugs and scale. Symptoms of mealy bugs include small, cotton-like patches or sooty mold. The best way to get rid of a mealy bug infestation is disrupt the bug's reproductive cycle. This can be done by spraying plants with an all natural insecticide over a period of weeks. These are readily available at most garden centers and nurseries.

Scale infestations appear either as red or brown bumps, or cotton-like patches along the stems at leaf and branch nodes. They can be controlled by drying them out with an application of rubbing alcohol or applying a horticultural oil directly onto the insects to suffocate them.

Decorating Norfolk Pines for the Holidays

Keep the decorations small and lightweight. To avoid stressing the plant, keep an eye on soil moisture and make sure to remove any ornaments quickly after the holidays. If your decorating your pine with lights, make sure to use bulbs that are cool. Lights that run hot may dry out and permanently damage tender needles, causing them to turn brown or fall off. Consider lightweight paper ornaments or garlands made from popcorn and dried fruit for a more natural look. When the holidays pass, return to a winter care regime until new growth appears in the spring.

Using A Ladder On The Roof Without Crushing Gutters

When using an extension ladder in cleaning gutters or going on the roof of the house, etc., your weight on the ladder can damage, crush, or even tear off your gutters when you put the ladder up against the gutters before climbing. To prevent damage by a ladder, get a delivery type plastic milk crate. Place it on the ground, open side down. Extend the ladder at least 3 rungs above the crate. Use wire, string, or bungy cord to secure the crate to the ladder, around the middle of the rung itself. Slowly raise the ladder, with crate attached, to the roof just above the gutter. The crate will sit directly on the roof, keeping the ladder off the gutter, preventing contact, therefore preventing crushing or bending the gutter! The crate will sit flat on the roof, no matter what pitch, making the ladder more stable also.

Santa's Gift Tag Stickers and Other Santa Tips

Here's a tip to help your littlest ones on Christmas morning (and to confound your present peekers and up-and-coming handwriting analysts!):

Use character stickers to identify each child's presents from Santa! Use a different character sticker to denote each child's presents (Barbie for Lizzie, Elmo for Sam, etc.) Put one character sticker on the child's stocking so he or she knows which presents to look for. Each gift for that child is identified with that character's sticker.

For "sharing" gifts (DVD's, games, etc. to be enjoyed by all the kids), put on stickers of all the characters.

And once your kids are old enough to read, pick up some gift tags on your way to the office (ones that the kids haven't seen around the house). Ask a friend at work, on the train, etc., to write out a number of stickers in the children's names. (Do some "sharing" labels, too.) Then label the gifts, and the kids will be none the wiser.

Over the years, I've asked several co-workers to help out in this regard, and they've all gotten a good laugh out of it. Some who have gone on to greater things still ask if they can help with the Christmas labels!!

Treat Glaucoma Before It Is Too Progressed

A person can have eye troubles and never know it. Glaucoma is an eye disease that can cause blindness, if left untreated. It's a heredity caused disease. One in every seven generations will have it. I know this, as someone in my family seven generations had this terrible disease and I am the unlucky ancestor that inherited it from them. I have to use prescription eye drops every night before bedtime, for the rest of my life, to keep the glaucoma where it is now, than spreading on. Keep up on what kinds of diseases or problems your ancestors had or have and keep tabs on your own health on a regular basis.

If you don't have this type of info already, with the age of internet, do your genealogy for your ancestorial info. It will not only help you out, but your family as well, precious time and money down the road!

Measuring Cup Gift for Christmas

A wonderful, inexpensive, lovely idea for Christmas gift giving. Purchase a measuring cup, preferably glass. Tie a ribbon to handle with a card stating this or something like this:

"The measure of a person should be by the content of goodness in their heart.

The amount of love they show and give.

The amount of compassion toward others.

The giving of themselves, even when they don't feel

like there is much to give.

The unselfish acts they perform.

The kindness they emit.

The joy they share.

The measure of a person should be by what is in their heart alone.

And you, my friend, Measure Up!

Thank you for being a true friend!

This Christmas, may your cup runneth over!

I wish you a Truly Blessed Christmas! 2007"

I wrote this and gave these last year to my best lady friends - it was a huge hit! They just loved them and were so very touched. I am so happy to share this with you all!

May God Bless you too!

Personalized Wrapping Paper and Gift Tags

There were a few years where money was very scarce, and I ran out of Christmas wrapping paper. I found white freezer paper, and made use of old Christmas cards, family pictures and would draw or paint on the packages. It was fun and creative, you can also add a poem or write something.

When I run out of Christmas labels now or just want to be creative, I will take a piece of the wrapping paper, cut it in a square, rectangle or any shape and fold it over. I take pretty ribbon (wire ribbon works well), put a strip over the label, scissor a V at the end, and staple the top so it doesn't show, then put the name of the recipient inside the little card label. Makes a beautiful package and people enjoy the personalization as well.

Two Yuppettes were shopping. When they started to discuss their home lives, one said, "Seems like all Alfred and I do anymore is fight. I've been so upset, I've lost 20 pounds."

"Why don't you just leave him then?" asked her friend.

"Oh! Not yet." the first replied, "I'd like to lose at least another fifteen pounds first."

Finding Good Chestnuts for Roasting

I love hot, roasted chestnuts! When I was little, mom and I would roast and eat chestnuts every Christmas Eve. It was a just-for-us moment, a very precious memory. I've been trying to recreate that ritual but every time I buy a bag of chestnuts they are rotten. I buy from reputable stores and roast them immediately but when they are shelled they are always covered with a blue mold. Last year I paid $5.00 for a tiny bag and only 2 were edible! Is there any way to tell in advance if chestnuts are fresh?
