Using Cayenne to Control Garden Pests

My friend told me that sprinkling hot cayenne pepper on plants will keep away animals and insects that will eat them. Is this true? And if so, do you sprinkle the whole plant?

http://www.ehow  aign=yssp_art-or search for your question,moth balls will help keep animals out of the garden, also hang foil in garden, good luck.
