Use Bright Clothing Or Backgrounds In Outdoor Photos

When picture taking outside, I noticed the pics looked really dull. So I always get the kids to dress up in bright colored clothes or use bright back grounds. I also like using the sky as a background by letting the kids climb a tree, monkey bars or swing set take the picture looking up at them. The pics come out bright and beautiful. My photo books are filled with bright pics of the kids. They make great gifts for great grandpa too.

Washable Cloth Nappies

I made all my daughters nappies from old t shirts, towels or off cuts of flannel fabric. They all close with Velcro. As she's is now potty trained, I'm making training pants from fleece fabric. I'm sorry I have no pictures to post. I just drew out the pattern and I'm now selling them to friends and by word of mouth. As a single parent of 2, this was my best money saving thing I have done

Craft: Painted Halloween Gourds

Jack O' Lantern: Cut out leaves from puff paper, you can use color you like best. Wash the gourd good, let dry. Whitewash and let dry, then paint. When dry, spray with sealer.

Pumpkin And Ghost: Wash gourd and let dry about half and hour. Whitewash whole gourd and let dry about half an hour, I do a few at a time because I give them as gifts. Paint pumpkin first, then ghost. These are so cute.

Frog (American Bulldog)

This is Frog (he jumped a lot of fences as a younger dog). He is 9 years old and an American Bulldog. My son got Frog in 2002 and he now lives with my husband and I.

He loves to take car rides and just lay on the back deck and enjoy the outdoors. Frog is the best natured dog I have ever had. I don't know if all American bulldogs are this good natured but he loves everyone and everyone who meets him loves him too.

Do It Yourself Outdoor Christmas Decorations

Our do-it-yourself outdoor Christmas decoration began as a way to recycle things that our college age children had left at home. With three teenagers away at college, you can imagine all of the items that I had been stuck with. The do-it-yourself projects began as a way for me to actually use some of the items they had "forgotten" for years. As a seasoned parent, I knew that some things could not be donated to the Goodwill store, for fear they would be a treasured part of their childhood and want back some day. Yet, it was very tempting to give the twelve foot poster of Boys2Men away.

Each of our three daughters had left their exercise balls in their rooms. They are the three foot high air filled balls, that they were going to die if they didn't have. I am pretty sure, two have never been used. Covering each ball in paper mache, spray painting them white, and hot glue them together became the first step in our nine foot tall snowman. A top hat from the magic faze in 1994, with a matching scarf and mitten set from the Hello Kitty era, glued on red covered rock buttons from the 90's, and our snowman was dressed. His face was made of various felt scraps found in the scrapbook box. Yes, the same scrapbook box that they just had to have, and I have yet to see a single scrapbook page. Our snowman sits under the four oak trees in our front yard. He looks welcoming and festive.

Our next project came from the thirty four pairs of drum sticks that we found in a closet. How did she ever get on the honor roll, if she went to that many concerts in high school? Okay, she played the drums, but does she really need that many? Phil Collins probably doesn't have that many sets. Taking the drumsticks and spray painting them green was the first step to the recycling project. Hot gluing three together in the center to make a snowflake design was the largest use of hot glue I have ever seen. Each drumstick snowflake was then wrapped in small white twinkle outdoor Christmas lights.

The snowflakes are suspended from our four oak trees by fishing line we had in the garage. My mate went deep sea fishing once in the 80's, and we still have the line. No, I don't know why we still have it. Nor, do I know why we still have napkins from our wedding stored in a box. The extension cords are all black, and not seen at night, that are attached to each snowflake. The eleven twinkling snowflakes have such a beautiful effect in the trees, falling down on our snowman. It looked so awesome that we ended up making twenty more out of dowel rods.

This year we added five dancing children around the snowman. Holding hands with their faces towards the snowman makes for a winter wonderland atmosphere. The children are just stuffed clothing left by the girls. Unless high waist jeans make a comeback, I am safe on this one. Sweatshirts with Mickey Mouse, Dance troupe member 1995, Aspen 1997, Where's the beef?, and the Backstreet boys keep our outdoor children warm. Matching gloves, hats, scarves hide their lack of facial features. Shoes that the girls have not worn in a decade, make the playing children complete. Dowels rods have been used to secure them in the ground. It doesn't sound politically correct, but I stapled their gloves to each other so the appear to be hand in hand as they dance around the snowman.

The candle collection of one our children, has been used to light the luminaries that line our driveway for Christmas. When ask if she wanted the candle collection for her apartment, she laughed and ask if they had me on medication. I took that to mean, I was free to use them as I saw fit. So, each evening during the twelve days of Christmas I place rainbows, frogs, and cheerleader candles into the paper sacks that line our drive.

Do it yourself outdoor Christmas decorations can be a useful way to recycle and a wonderful way to use your own unique flair. If anyone has a suggestion on how to decorate for Valentine's day with 217 sports trophies, please let me know. Merry Christmas.

Pumpkins for Outdoor Vase

When it's pumpkin time and you have flowers in your yard, why not use your pumpkin to display a bouquet of flowers on your porch or doorstep? I had a lot of marigolds which were still blooming so I arranged them in the hollowed out pumpkin. You can place a jar of water into the pumpkin so your arrangement will last a lot longer.

Cloning Rose Bushes

Have you ever tried cloning Rose Bushes? If you have with out success, here is a simple tip that will get you started on your way. I took a clipping from a rose bush and put it in some good potting soil mixed with some peat moss. New growth has worked best. This will be the thinner stems that have not developed the wood-like look and feel yet.

Take the bottom leaves off your cutting and dip in some rooting hormone. Put the clone in a pot with good drainage. The water will come out fast from the bottom. Once it is drained off for the most part, set your pot in something like a small bird bath to collect the remaining water. Leave the remaining water in the bird bath to keep your soil moist.

About every three to four days pick up your pot and water from the top well. Reason being is to shower out any build up that it may be getting that is should not have such as mildew, sour dirt etc.

Clean out our bird bath well. Replace the pot again leaving a small amount of water in the bottom. If you continuously do this every few days, you will be cleaning any fungus the rose should not get.

It is best if you put your clone in the shade if you have extreme heat. Also this process can be used with out a rooting hormone, but a root starter may produce roots faster. In about 5 yo 6 weeks your rose bush is well on it's way to transplant.

The best time to transplant is when there is a lot of moisture in the air, or when you are getting a few days rain at a time. Cloning works better out side than indoors.

Once rose bushes are well established, they don't like there roots wet at all times. In some cases it causes mold, and causes bloom reduction. Putting banana peals under the dirt when planting, or just under the dirt for a well established plant helps fight disease.

To cut cost on blooming products, try using blood from your hamburger or roast beef, mix with water and apply it to the roots. It is a great help for flower production.

If you purchase a rose bush from a garden center, It is recommended to soak the roots in a mild solution of bleach water over night before planting. This helps to kill off any mold or fungus that may have been accumulated while shipping in the trucks.

I wish you great cloning success.

Buy Individual Salads at a Deli

I got tired of buying salad fixings only to eat from a head of lettuce once or twice and tossing it out. I now buy a salad with a little shredded cheese and tomato wedge from the store deli. Once at home with it at dinner time, add a few bacon bits and my dressing and maybe cucumber or red onion, some sliced boiled egg or a little leftover chicken or other meat!

In the long run I am saving money because I eat the whole container full of salad whereas there's a lot of waste if I buy a lettuce head when I am only 1 person eating it!

Many gardeners do not know that certain seeds can be started outside in the colder parts of the U.S. They are seeds that would fall off the plant themselves naturally that work. Here is a website that explains how this is done. And you can get free seeds to boot. It also gives us something to think about during our long winters.

Freeze Heavy Duty Water Bottles For Work

I carry a bottle of water with me to work every day and I love very cold water so I freeze my water so it will stay cold all day but you can't use those "wimpy" plastic bottles. I buy Propel or the small Gatorade bottles which are heavy plastic and will take freezing. I reuse the same bottles every week. I have had the same bottles for about a year now saving money and plastic and my water is always cold. I also use the some bottles in the cooler when we go on vacation. They stay cold longer and don't melt all over everything.

Get Rid of Pests in Fall Arrangements

If you wish to use pine cones, seed pods and the like in your fall arrangements, spread them on a foil covered cookie sheet and put them in the oven to about at hour at 200 degrees F. That will kill any critters that might be hiding inside. The last thing you want is a few critters to come out to join you for Thanksgiving dinner!

Get Free Hedges and Plants By Propagating Your Own

I live in an area where I need privacy but can't afford to buy all the plants I need to grow a hedge, so I decided to propagate my own plants for free! All you need to buy is a container of rooting hormone (under $5) and several bags of playground sand.

Take a shallow box that's about 4 to 6 inches high then put the box inside of a plastic garbage bag, then poke holes for drainage. It's important to have good drainage. I prefer to use old soda-pop crates. The kind they use to deliver pop cans in, but wooden boxes will also work as well as cardboard ones in a pinch. You'll need to put your propagating sandbox in a shady place out of direct sun. This box will be heavy and hard to move, so find a place you'd like it to stay or put the box in an old wagon if you think you'd like to move it later.

Now, all you have to do is to find the kind of plants you'd like to propagate. I chose English Laurel because it grows very fast at 1 - 2 feet per year and it's also evergreen, but you can propagate many types of plants for indoor or outdoor use. You can find plants that grow in the wild, and sometimes you can get cuttings off of plants at businesses (always ask first!) It helps to keep a jug of water and a pocket knife with you "just in case"! And of course, there's your friends and neighbors. They are usually very happy to let you take several cuttings. But what I do is to wait until I know someone is trimming their hedges or pruning them, I'll then ask if I can help them by taking away their mess and use this to take cuttings from.

After you have your plants, put them into a vase of water overnight. I cut the tops off of 2 liter plastic pop bottles and use these as propagating "vases". Your propagated plants will not have roots to get their own water from for weeks, so you need to make sure they are well hydrated to start with. After your plants have sat for 1 or 2 days in the clean water, cut the bottoms off leaving 5 or so leaves so the plants can make chlorophyll and are no more than 8 inches high. Dip the bottom end of the plant into water to moisten it, then into rooting power and lastly, put the plant into the sand and into a hole you've just made with a stick. Try to keep as much rooting hormone power on to the small plant as you can as you are planting it. After you've planted as many cuttings as you'd like be sure to water them well. With some plants it's best to take cuttings in the spring, and with others it's best in the summer or fall.

"Is it working?" her daughter asks.

"Yes and no," the mother says. "I've lost 15 pounds, but your dad has gained 20."

Fall Themed 30th Anniversary Party

I want to do a surprise 30th anniversary party for my sister and brother-in-law. Any ideas? I am doing a buffet, fall colors, orange and yellow table cloths. Centerpieces are little fish bowls with a votive candle, amber marbles with a ribbon and flowers around the top.

I have lots of clear Christmas lights to put around the ceilings and beams of the cabin. We are having the party at a log cabin. I would like to have some elegant things dangling from the lights. Has anyone ever waxed leafs and made garland? Also need something inexpensive to decorate two fireplace mantles.

My budget is getting tight as I am doing this all myself. For party favors I thought about just tying candy corns in little tulle things but would like other suggestions. I only have 3 weeks to pull this off. I really didn't have a theme but thought about "Falling for you all over again". Any ideas how to throw what I have into this theme? Cake ides would be helpful too!

Paint Color Advice

I have marble tile, black granite counter tops, mahogany furniture, what color should I paint the walls? I just purchased my first home, and it is in desperate need of paint. Right now, the walls are white. The floors are a white marble, and carpet a light grey (It will eventually be replaced but am putting my money into other home repairs.

The kitchen has dark granite countertops, and my kitchen table and bakers rack also feature this color of granite. The floor is white marble, with streaks of blue. I was thinking of getting black appliances. Right now the cabinets are white, which I am thinking of antiquing. I am looking for ideas to paint the kitchen.

The dining room, I have a mahogany table and china cabinet. Again, the tile around the carpet is marble, with light grey tile. I've thought about doing a light tan for the house, just because I read it goes well with everything.

My bedroom furniture is also mahogany. Any tips for the bedroom or should I just go with the same color as the rest of the house? Any tips, advice, ideas appreciated! I am a 27 year old single man, and am not the best color coordinator.
