Rain Barrels for Practically Free
By Wanda from Climax, NC

What we really liked about this tip was that they were able to ask around and get the barrels for free. There are a lot of items that are thrown out, especially by businesses, that can be useful for many purposes. It never hurts to ask.

Tip Contest Winner

Start Your Own Frugal Club
By Leslie from Brandon, MS

With rising food and gas costs, it's a great time for people to band together and save. Creating clubs that operate on a local scale can be a great way to look ways to save that will work where you live.

Crystal clearly worked hard on this one. She has lots of wonderful ideas for teens and all of the ideas can be done cheaply if you plan ahead.

Recipe Contest Winner

Wildlife: Blue Heron and Fish

Be ready and armed with your camera. Spend time in the outdoors with your family. I stumbled across this scene of a great blue heron eating a fish on the local river.

We were surprised to see him swallow that big fish whole! Nature is full of surprises and is well worth taking a stroll to make new discoveries.

Craft: Terra Cotta Pot Tables

This is just to show you another project you can do with the terra cotta pots. You do the same as the bird bath, just turn the top tray upside down and it is a table, I don't like the blue, I made these for my daughter and this is what she wanted, you can put a plexy glass top on it and they make nice patio tables.

Today's Tips:

Support Your Daycare Provider

In a feedback to another post, I read something that got me all riled up. The person said that many people are willing to pay more for lawn work than for child care or to have the inside of the house cleaned. Let me begin by saying that in most cities, garbage collectors make more than daycare workers and city employees have benefits while most daycare centers don't provide much in the way of benefits.

During the 50's through the 70's, I was a stay at home mom but when we came to Houston in 1982, I decided to go to work. Since there aren't many CEO positions open to a 45 year old with no experience, I went to the daycare center down the street. I found out that, while minimum wage was walking around money for me, many of my coworkers were single moms who had to get by on it and were working daycare to have a place for their own kids to be all day.

All states require daycare people to take a certain number of hours of continuing education courses to work. These, many times, are paid for by the employee and are on weekends which means time away from family and chores. In many situations the allowance for classroom materials is meager at best. This means some folk spend out of pocket for extras. Near the end of each work day, classes are combined after children start to leave. As the classrooms empty out, one of the persons who has had our nation's future in his or her hands all day gets to cart the garbage out, and clean all the tables, toys and floors with whatever disinfectant is permitted. Things haven't changed much since I first started out. As recently as 2004, I contacted several centers in different areas of Houston, under pretense of looking for a job, to compile information to pester the state legislators on behalf of daycare workers in Texas. I found that while some do offer medical insurance it is so expensive no one can afford it. I also learned that people in the poorer neighborhoods are still working in those same conditions which faced me in 1982.

I would like everyone who reads this and has children in daycare to go to bat for the daycare worker. Push for a livable wage and reasonable benefit package. After all, these people are early childhood educators and should be paid and treated as such.

Hair Spray Tips and Hair Dressing Tips

One of the best hairdresser techniques I have discovered is this:

Buy a "Shaper" spray, and a separate "Freezing" spray, generic brands are o.k. Sebastian is one of the originators, I believe, yet there are generics now at great reductions in cost.

Unless one teases the hair a bit, there's really NO way to hairspray it, without teasing, for BEST CONTROL in unpredictable winds. I use a 3/4" round boar-bristle BRUSH, rather than a comb. I find the brush does less damage in teasing. I trim about 1/4" of hair off every month, cut 1" every three months unless I change styles. Hair grows about 1/2 inch a month for the average person.

Assuming clean hair and no conditioner/oils, a little teasing, working the teasing from the back neckline (nape) upward towards the crown of the head (top off-center point, slightly towards back); stop halfway up, putting the teasing comb/or brush aside a minute; spray both sprays, smoothing and shaping with "Shaper", not "freezing" done secondly when style is exactly what you want. This creates a foundational base of sprayed hair BENEATH the second layer of teasing as you move to the crown and spray again with both. Yes, it takes a LOT more spray than one is used to.

Being careful not to overspray or spray into the unteased hair as best as you can, clipping it out of the way in the direction opposite from the hair section just teased; begin teasing the sides of the head from the ears up, teasing and smoothing hair with a teasing pick/comb towards the direction you wish the hair to go, then spray with both sprays.

If Your Watch Becomes Magnetized

This is a tip to get your watch working again when the second hand is going forward one second and then back one second. If your watch has ever done this, you know just what I mean.

The reason is that your watch has become magnetized. You don't need a new battery. Just go to a big box store like Walmart or K-Mart, and have them run your watch across the de-magnetizer that's built into their register counters. That should do the trick.

Source: I learned this from several watch repair websites that I researched a few years ago.

Run Your Mower Out of Gas Before Storing

If you have a gas lawn mower, every time you use it, before storing it, make sure the mower runs out of gas. You'll stop the carburetor from gumming up. Also, they make a fuel additive for lawn mowers, that helps clean the carburetor. This will make the mower easier to start the next time. Remember to change the air filter regularly. More so in dusty conditions.

My Story with Baby Hatchlings

I grew up with animals and always had a great love for birds. My parents moved to Ontario and I had to sell all my birds :(

While we were there, I got a number of birds back again. 6 months later, my parents decided they were moving back to Nova Scotia, and I had to get rid of all my birds again! Well, I ran to the barn and cried and cried.

Unbeknown to me. my mother was outside listening to me. So after a talk with my dad and a lot of no's, they finally decided to allow me to keep the litter of chicks that was due to hatch on the day we were to leave. 1 gosling, 1 duckling and 5 chicks hatched. I got a tiny cardboard box and put them all in it. I had to carry the box in my hand the entire trip back. Being 9 people in a half ton truck, loaded to the gills with stuff, we took turns shifting from the cab to the back of the pickup. We crawled in over the clothes and stuff, trying to catch 40 winks, Even asleep, my dad remarked how tightly I held onto the small cardboard box.

Anyways I kept those babies next to my bed every night with my hand hung over the side into the box with my babies, I was their mummy and they wraped around my hand all night long. I took them outside days and they followed me everywhere. Well the chicks grew up and well became chicks. They were never scared of me, used me as a perch often enough. But what I remember the most was my goose, I called him Weep Weep, and boy, did he know his name! He went everywhere with me, sat on my lap, on the floor beside me, went out side to play. I remember one time I took on the beeline to the beach. Poor thing stretched those legs best he could trying to keep up with me, just a hollering all the way, When he'd catch up, he'd stretch his neck out and talk in his loving happy way, wrap his neck around mine and just go on and on. Went in the water, he was always right there. So many people used to just get flabbergasted over it. It was the darnedest thing!

A problem arose once he became about 2 years old. I was crouched on the ground and he climbed on my back. Being a kid, I didn't realize what was going on till he grabbed my hair. My mum and Dad was in the window and saw this. They said the gander was trying to mate with me. Well geeze! Anyways, I decided he needed a mate, yes a real mate. It was the hardest thing I ever did. My parents wouldn't allow me to get another goose, so I found him a good home on a island with lots of other geese. Never ever forgot my gander. Geese are just too smart and very loyal.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Margaret was royally peeved! She was arguing with the druggist because her favourite cure-all could not be bought without a prescription.

"Look, lady. You can't have this without a prescription because it's a habit-forming drug."

"IT IS NOT!!!!" Screamed Margaret! "I ought to know: I've been taking it regularly for thirtyseven years!"

Advice For Cleaning Up and Getting Rid Of Stuff

I am trying to clean up my condo. I have done really well. I am cleaning as I pick up, put away and straighten. There are repairs that need to be done and I can't do them. I have asked and am going to put up a sign at church asking for help. As I put stuff away I know it doesn't go in that place but I don't have room in the place where it should go.

I have the dining room set for sale in a local paper. The table still has stuff on it. I take stuff off and I just don't know what to do with the mess that is still there. What do I do? I also have stuff I would like to sell at a yard sale. I really need the money to pay some Dr.'s bills. That stuff is in the living room.

Cat Poops On Floor When With Other Cats

We adopted an adult male cat (already neutered) about three 3 ago named Henry. We already had two adult males who we raised from kittens. All three are indoor only. At first, there was some hissing and growling but they soon learned to live in peace. However, about 1 year ago, Henry started to occasionally poop beside a litter box. I never found urine outside the box, only poop.

We have not changed boxes or litter. We have not moved or adopted any more animals or made any other changes that I can think of. At first it looked like he would refuse to use the box if it was too dirty. We became more diligent about cleaning all the boxes. However, the frequency of his going beside the box continued to increase to almost every day, even within hours of clearing the box. We had him checked by the vet to make sure he doesn't have any infections or problems, clean bill of health.

Then, a couple of times, it looked like one of our other cat's was bullying Henry near the litter boxes but I couldn't tell for sure. So, we've been keeping Henry and his box upstairs and our other two cats in the basement with their boxes. Henry uses his box correctly. However, if he manages to sneak out to the basement, he'll run straight down and go beside the boxes!

I'm at my wits end. I can not continue to keep his box upstairs. Our house is too small and there is just no good place to put it. I can't allow him to use the floor in the basement either, that's just gross! Any ideas? My husband is threatening to take Henry to the SPCA and I'm running out of time to solve this problem.
