Beauty Bath Bar

  • 1 bar soap
  • acrylic paints, paint brushes
  • 2 ounces canning wax
Paint a design over one side of the bar of soap, using the acrylic paints. Let dry. Meanwhile, in a double boiler over medium heat, place canning wax. When the wax is completely melted, use a disposable brush to paint a layer of clear wax over the design on the bar of soap. Set the bar of soap aside until the wax dries. The protective layer of wax will allow the soap to be used while the painted design remains on the bar!

Fabric-fun Pillows Made from Children's Artwork

Children should first think of a shape and pencil it onto their fabric. Now, they can fabric paint to make their picture (a car, a train, a person) come alive. Let the kids go with it, mistakes can easily be touched up afterward with help from a guardian.

Scented Rocks

  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon essential oil (any kind)
  • 2/3 cup boiling water
In a small bowl, combine flour, salt and essential oil. Mix well and add boiling water. Add drops of any food coloring and mix well. When mixture has cooled enough to handle, roll mixture into 2-3 inch balls. Shape balls into assorted rock shapes. Place "rocks" on a cooling rack in a warm dry area. After several days, the rocks will be hard. These scented rocks will give a nice fragrance when placed in various dishes around the house. Can also make other things out of the dough and follow the same directions for drying.

Using Carpet Samples to Carpet Your Room

My husband and I were living on a limited income and our living room floor really needed carpet. So we started collecting carpet squares or carpet samples from the various carpet stores in our area until we had enough to do this room. These work great because they are very reasonable usually 25-50 cents a piece, stain guarded or stain resistant, easy to install, you get to use your creativity as far as color and design and you usually get better grade carpet this way. And best of all if one gets stained, just take it up and replace it.

This room cost us about $35.00 to do. You will need to remove the binding from all your squares before you start to lay the floor. It is easier to clear the entire room and start laying the carpets out the way you like them until the whole room is done to your satisfaction. You can cut and piece anyway you like, any shape or size. Then go back to where you started and start stapling the pieces down to the floor until you have the entire floor stapled down. Once this is done, vacuum and stand back and admire your creativity and handiwork. This process works for any room you want to do.

Spray Chalk

  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup warm water
  • drops of food coloring

In a medium bowl, combine cornstarch and water, stirring until mixture is smooth. Add drops of any food coloring and mix well. Pour mixture into small plastic spray bottle. Shake bottle before using to break up clogs. Use spray chalk to decorate sidewalks or snow. Or use it to create colorful sand sculptures at the beach. Makes 1 cup.

Tips:

Easy Homemade Gift Ideas

I know that teachers are always looking for different things to have their students make. I taught vacation Bible School where I had $150 to design 6 crafts for for 50 kids. In other words $1 per kid per day.

Decorative Stones (Stepping)

  • I got 50 food trays at Smart and Final for $8.99
  • 1 big sack of mortar for $4.89
  • shells from the beach and dollar tree store
  • marble type stones from the dollar tree store

We mixed the mortar and put it in each of the trays. We only had 20 kids this day, but the mortar filled 24 trays. We let them sit for about 20 minutes and then we let the kids design their own decorative stones for the garden. It was really great. Everyone was really impressed.

Shell Magnets

  • Shells from the dollar tree store
  • dry flowers from wal mart
  • sticky magnet strip
  • tacky glue

Take your shell and put glue at the base of the shell. Arrange your flowers in the shell. Place a little shell at the base of the flowers to hide flower stems. Place a piece of magnet strip on the back.

This shell magnet also looks great when you use one of the roll type of shells. You place the glue in the hole and have the flowers coming out of it.

Sand Candles

  • Clean sand (about $4.00)
  • recycled candles
  • shells
  • plastic fish, ocean creatures, etc. (I found them at the dollar tree store) birthday candles paper bowl (or foam)
  • birthday candle

Melt your candles - trying to keep the colors grouped correctly. Fill the bowls 2/3 full with wet sand. Have the kids make a well (they can use their fists, but they need to make it deep or they will have a flat candle). The bottom of the well should be flat. Have the kids place shells, plastic fish, etc. with the "pretty side out in the sand. They are great when they are half in the sand and half out. Pour melted wax in the hole. The sand will work as your mold for the candle.

When the wax seems to set on the top, put in one of the birthday candles. The wax of the candle will melt and mix into the other wax. Now you have your wick. If your birthday candle sticks up too much, push it down a little after 5 minutes. Let set until hard. You will be able to tell. Take out of the sand and brush excess sand off. An old toothbrush works great.

Hope that this gives you some ideas

Connie

Finger Paints

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups cold water
  • 2 cups hot water
  • drops of food coloring

Directions:

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine flour and salt. Add cold water and using a whisk or hand mixer, beat mixture until smooth. Add hot water and bring mixture to a boil, stirring until glossy. Remove from heat. If you want to make more then 1 color, carefully separate into more containers. Add drops of desired color food coloring. Stir until mixture is completely colored, adding more drops of food coloring if needed. Let your finger paint cool completely before using finger paints in various art projects. Store in airtight containers. Makes about 5 cups.

Uses For Leftover Christmas Paper

Old Christmas wrapping paper makes great pattern paper! If you make your own sewing patterns or make duplicate patterns or revisions to patterns like I do, use your old Christmas wrapping paper or Christmas tissue paper, it makes GREAT PATTERNS!

You can also turn over Christmas wrapping paper and let kids use the blank side to color or paint on.

When buying Christmas paper during the holidays, I try to find colors that I can use the rest of the year for gifts and other holidays like Gold, Silver, Copper, Purple, Blue, and Checked or Stars. Gold and silver makes great wedding and anniversary wrapping paper while Blue, Purple, Checks and Stars makes great Birthday paper.

Use Gold Christmas Paper to "gold leaf" your crafts and projects with.

Lint Roller To Clean Up Thread

In order to save dragging out the vacuum cleaner, I use a lint roller for picking up threads on my rug. I have an area rug where my favorite spot to sew is located. I have found this to be very effective and a very fast clean-up.

Soap Slivers To Mark Fabric

Take the small pieces of soap that are left over in the shower, dry them out and presto, you've got a great marking tool for fabrics and quilting. The soap slivers work great to mark dark fabric, and it washes out easily too!

The Money Will Follow

They say that if you "stick with what makes you happy, the money will follow". I don't know about that, but if you have a talent at something, and love doing it, go for it! You never know.

Through many many moves, four children, and often little space or money, I have always tried to find a corner to do art. I've always tried to incorporate it into my children's lives. It's just something that's always been a part of me. Now that my kids are older, I look back and see that, I'm a lot better than I was when they were little. All those years of doing what I love have paid off. I now know a lot more, (although typically, I also know that I could always, and will, hopefully always improve.)

Never give up, and always make room for that little corner to do what you love. I don't know if the "money will follow", but the joy of doing it has been priceless!

Keep Craft Supplies In Individual Ziplock Bags Or Totes

Busy Moms, this is a dream come true. I am a teacher and also a mother of a 5 year old who loves crafting. As I am a crafter as well, I am always looking for fun, fast, easy ways for us to do a craft or my students to do a craft without spending so much time setting up and cleaning up and having more time for fun. It hit me in my class one day to put all the materials needed, right down to the glue and scissors in individual bags that are labeled and ready to go at a moment's notice. Each bag includes paper towels for messes and paper plates to work on and to let the craft dry on as well. If you are gathering the materials anyway, it is just one more step to stuff them into ziplocks.

I even do it at home now so when my daughter and her friends want to make a craft. I can pull out some baggies and away they go with little or no help from me. I love it too for my crafts. I put mine in totes because they are larger but I can grab a tote and craft away.

Yes, you do end up buying multiples of things like scissors and glue but who can't use more of those? I get mine at the dollar store so it doesn't break the bank and re-use any left-overs for another craft bag. I have even started giving them as gifts and other Moms love them!

Making Crafts From Dishcloths

Does anyone have a book or some ideas on making gift items out of new dish cloths? A friend gave me a pair of pajamas made out of three dish cloths. They are folded to look like a pair of pajamas. Attached to the pajamas is a note that says "We look like pajamas, But, really we aren't. We are just 3 little dish cloths; You will like us a lot. So just take us apart, it really won't hurt. Use us for dishes or just chasing dirt." I'm at work and cannot get a picture of them, but they are so cute. I can take these apart but would like to make this and other things like this.
