Unless we're like Mother Hubbard and our cupboard is bare, most of us want to increase our "know how" of cupboard food storage. We want food to look and taste good. We want it to retain the nutrients it had when purchased. Is it safe to eat? Knowing how to store food properly and how long it will keep means fewer food dollars wasted. Store foods in cool cabinets. Put dishes or pans in the cabinets over the range, near the dishwasher or by the refrigerator exhaust. In these places, the temperature is too warm for food. Store potatoes and onions in the coolest part of your cupboard. Keep foods in glass jars in a dark place.

I have wasted a fortune on those cutesy chip clippers. They insist upon breaking the second or third time I use them... I finally started using the clip clothespina which you squeeze to open. I use them to keep bags of chips fresh and safe from Houston humidity and also to close the inner bag in cereal boxes. I have a little basket on my bar which was a gift from a lovely person with whom I worked before retiring. She gave it to me full of potpourri... now it's holding my clothespins.

Do NOT store the potatoes and onions together. Your onions will go moldy from the humidity from the potatoes and will go bad sooner. Potatoes stored in the refridgerator will give off a gas that will change the flavor of your carrots.
