Isabelle (Long Haired Tabby)

Isabelle is 3 years old. She is a long haired tabby cat. We got our cat when her stray mother got into our house, and had kittens in my husband's closet.

Isabelle loves to go outside, and roll in the grass.

Sock Monkey
By Kim Davis

I always hated retrieving the toy that had been dropped from the stroller or the walker when my daughter was little. A sock monkey solved the problem. It was soft and would drape over the edge of the stroller or walker. It had lots of things for little hands to hold. And it didn't have any pieces that could be chewed off. Best of all, I could throw it in the washing machine!

Sam (Shitzu/French Basset Hound)

This my wonderful little dog Sam with my greatniece Sara. He is approximately 4 years old. A friend rescued him and then he came to live with me a couple of years ago. I think whoever abandoned him also horribly mistreated him because he is very shy and timid until he gets to know you. I believe he is part Shitzu and part French Basset Hound (PBGV-Petite Basset Griffon Vendeen).

He hardly ever barks and I have never heard him even growl, which is great considering how many small children we have in our family and how often we get together. His favorite thing to do is hide his dog treats in little nooks and crannies, like behind and under furniture. He will then cover the treat up with a dog toy. He is a wonderful little companion.

Squeaky Door Hinges

Cleaning With Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen Peroxide works well for cleaning cuts, so it should be no surprise that it is effective for blood stains. It can have a bleaching effect so you will want to pretest it before applying it to a fabric stain. Keep a spray bottle of peroxide handy to tackle tough blood stains, even dried ones.

For blood stains on carpet, pour peroxide directly on the stain and blot with clean cloth. Pretest this solution on a remnant. Hydrogen peroxide can be purchased in the first aid section of your local drug store or grocery store. Always keep a bottle on hand.

Cleaning With Borax

Borax is an effective ingredient in many cleaning recipes and also is a good laundry booster. Add one tablespoon of Borax to 1 quart of water and use it as a safe all-purpose cleaner. Dissolve a 1/2 cup of borax in a sink full of water to clean delicate dishes like fine China.

Follow the directions on the box to use it as a laundry booster. If you do construction or landscaping work and have really dirty work clothes adding Borax to your laundry helps a lot.

Borax can be purchased in the laundry section at your local grocery store. Sweeten musty basement floors by sprinkling around on the concrete, let it sit for a while, then sweep up.

Thrifty Redecorating

On the first floor of my home, I have similar colored curtains at every window, but, each set of curtains has a different texture or design. So, on those days when I am wanting a little change in the way my rooms look, but, am short on cash, I can just move curtains around. It provides a slight change without having to buy anything. I have also done this with pictures and plants.

Packing a Lunch - Not Soggy Sandwiches

Tired of soggy sandwiches? Instead of making the sandwich before you leave, pack the sandwich ingredients separately. Put the bread, meat and cheese in one bag or container and the lettuce and tomato in another. Use small reusable condiment containers to bring your favorite condiments. It will only take a minute or two to put the sandwich together and it will never be soggy.

Removing Make Up

Tips and ideas for removing make up. Post your ideas.

No More Tears Make Up Remover

I use my kids tearless shampoo in the shower to remove eye make-up. It's cheaper than 'real' make-up remover and is always there in the shower. Plus, no stinging!

Cleaning With Baking Soda

Baking soda is one of the most versatile substances you can have in your home. It makes a wonderful mild abrasive for surfaces that you want to be careful not to scratch. Just make a paste of baking soda with water. You can use it instead of Comet or other abrasive cleaners for cleaning bathroom fixtures. It works well for cleaning spots off chrome and stainless steel.

It can be added to your laundry as a booster (1/2 cup should work) to help clean really dirty clothing or fight odors. Baking soda can be purchased in the baking section at your grocery store. Look for two pound boxes or bags at big box stores to save money and have plenty of it around.

Cleaning With Washing Soda

Washing soda is often confused with baking soda but it's quite different. For starters, you don't bake with it! It's not edible. It is great as a laundry additive, to boost the cleaning of your detergent. You can make an effective scouring powder out of washing soda and baking soda. Mix 1/4 cup washing soda with 1 cup baking soda and use it as you would Comet or Ajax scouring powder. Washing soda can be purchased in the laundry aisle of your local grocery store.

Cleaning Fireplace Smoke Stains off Walls and Ceiling

I am helping clean a 50 year old house that has severe smoke stains from a fireplace. The painted ceiling and walls of the living room are covered in a combination of dust, smoke from the fireplace and soot. We are currently trying to get it off with Sugar soap but it doesn't seem to be working. The stains have been there for a while as the walls and ceiling haven't been cleaned for a number of years. If anyone has any low cost hints, it would be much appreciated!

Getting Rid of Chipmunks

I am swamped with chipmunks this summer. They eat my bird seed, dig under cement steps and in general are a problem, although cute little creatures, they have no mercy.

How can I get rid of these stinkers, we have caught a few in a live trap, but most are babies and slip through the sides. I've tried red pepper but it didn't work. I've tried the sticky pads, they walk around them. I've tried vaseline on the bird feeder pole, doesn't stop them either. HELP

Removing Painted Wallpaper

I find this newsletter and its' readers' tips and replies so helpful. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to remove wallpaper from a bathroom which has been painted over? The few pieces I tried to remove damaged the wall board.

I want to strip the walls, prime and repaint. Do i need to remove the paint first? it appears someone tried to spackle over the wallpaper prior to painting but did a poor job. It looks all lumpy. I'll try anything but can't afford to have it done professionally.

Thank you in advance for your tips.
Debbie
