Butterfly Baby Shower Cake

This is a photo of a shower cake I baked and decorated for a baby shower this weekend. The colors of the napkins were all bright neon colors and McCormick food coloring now sells neon cake coloring. I chose a patchwork pattern, and marked my pattern on the top of the cake with a toothpick, before decorating.

I used only one Wilton tip to fill in the blocks-number 21(STAR tip). I first iced the sides in pale pink, then filled in the top blocks. This requires no top border. Around the base, I used the same tip for a border, piping 2 sides green and two blue. Around the border I piped stars in the different colors. For an added touch I used favor sized pink diaper pins, pink and purple buttons and two small rattlers.

The cake was half Funfetti mix and half fudge mix. This is done by tilting the pan about 3" to the side when pouring in the pan, and doing the same to the other side when adding another flavor of cake mix. They bake together nicely, and some love the middle slices which give you both flavors of cake. It required only one batch of icing. (1 bag Powdered sugar-1 cup Crisco (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE) and a VERY SMALL amount of water and a couple of drops of vanilla flavoring.) Colors for the blocks were mixed in separate bowls.

The guests and Mother-to-be loved it and it was a very easy cake to do. Decorated in 45 minutes or less. This size cake would sell for $30 or more at a bakery. It cost me $6 or less to bake and decorate. DO IT YOURSELF, Moms, it's always more fun!

Berber Carpet Remnants

I found this berber carpet remnant (13 feet x 17 feet) at our local Habitat Thrift Store. I only paid $30 for it and it was brand new! Most Habitat resale stores will carry home improvement deals left over from housing projects. The cost to buy this size rug would have cost me about $500. Instead, I bought about 8 yards of burlap from Joann's that happened to be on sale for $1.99 per yard. I sewed the burlap into strips and folded them around the edges, securing with a commercial glue gun. All for a finished product of $50! Nothing is impossible if you're willing to think outside the box!

Pete And Wepete (Havanese/Cockapoo)

Pete and Wepete are 6 week old puppies. They are Havanese and cockapoo. They play with each other, their mother, and the kids around my house. They are the cutest little guys I have seen, little puff balls.

Crochet With Old T-Shirts

I like to crochet rag rugs out of fabric scraps. However, you always have to deal with the edges fraying. I got an idea. My husband had about 11 old colored cotton tee shirts. I cut them up in 1 1/2 inch strips going around and around (the fewer strips you've got, the less sewing them together you have to do). Then I crocheted them into a round rug. I think it turned out beautiful. I use it on the side of the bed. It matches everything.

Add Sour Cream To Boxed Stroganoff

Do you want to add a little zing to your Hamburger Helper Beef Stroganoff? Well, prepare by following the directions and, right before you serve it, add 1/2 of regular or fat-free sour cream! It makes it oh-so yummy! Yea, I know that last sentence sounded a little cheesy but, what the heck, it's true!

Keep Your Favorite Drink Cold

To keep carry along drinks from becoming hot too soon, or watery from ice, try this. Take a clean empty drink bottle and pour about an inch or two of whatever drink you like in it, and freeze. I like to do this with several at a time. So when you're ready to go, just pour the same kind of drink over your frozen in the bottle ice. Voila! No watery drink and a nicely chilled drink!

Instructions For Removing Sink Trap

My daughter dropped her diamond down the drain. She called a local plumber who said there would be a service call charge of $55.00 plus a charge to locate the ring. I called my brother in law who does plumbing, and here are the steps he gave me to do the job.

Start by finding the trap, a curved pipe under the sink, and put a bucket under it. Next you will loosen the two slip nuts while holding the trap in place, either by hand or with a plumber's wrench. Apply WD-40 if needed to help loosen nuts. When the trap pipe is off, dump the contents into the bucket. If your jewelry isn't there, use rubber gloves and feel in the pipe right above the trap. It may be stuck above. My daughter found her ring and she did not have to pay a plumber to come out.

By Bobbie G from Rockwall

Editor's Note: When you replace the trap, use some plumbers putty to make sure it doesn't leak. It's always a good idea after doing any plumbing to put a pan or bucket under where the work was done and check it the next day to make sure nothing is leaking.

Testing The Reliability Of Remote Cooking Thermometers

This is about cooking thermometers, the type in which you leave the probe in the meat while it's in the oven and have a control unit outside of the oven preset to beep at a certain meat temperature.

I have purchased 3 so far, and none of them register the boiling temp of water - so I took them back to the store for a refund. Am I incorrect in assuming that a pot of heavily boiling water 6 inches deep will reach 212 degrees F?

The thermometers all registered different numbers ranging from 180 to 204. Unreliable. And I couldn't get the 204 to repeat for more than a second. The prices for these units went from $20 something to $35.

Thanks,

Holly from Richardson, TX
