Glamorous Bathroom Wall Treatment

The walls in my bathroom were not in super good shape when I bought my 100 year old house, they had the old bumpy type plaster. After several attempts at painting, I finally came upon a solution.

I took both brown craft paper and red rosin paper (both available at home improvement stores)and tore it into uneven pieces, keeping some of them with a straight edge to put at the top of the wall where it met the ceiling. I then took them and crushed them between my hands really good and opened them up again, revealing the wrinkles. At this point smooth them slightly, but not very much.

Then, before I applied it to the wall, I spray painted some gold and used copper leaf paint on others (I bought the copper leaf paint at Wal-mart). I used a foam brush dipped in the copper leaf and very lightly drug it over the creases so it just hit the top of the creases. I let it dry and applied it with wallpaper paste. When it was all done, I applied a coat of water based polyurethane over the top.

I get more compliments on this room than any room in my house. I have a clawfoot tub and a vanity made from dresser. I also have chandeliers in there that adds to the glamor.

Dirty (Pitbull)

Dirty is 6 years old and is a pitbull. We bought him 2 months ago.

He likes to play tug of war with my two sons.

He is the sweetest dog, my sister-in-law is scared of dogs and she came to our house one night while we were watching movies. Dirty snuck up to her and just lays his head in her lap and looked up at her as if he was saying "I won't hurt you". She is no longer scared of him.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Reuse Prescription Bottles As Plant Filler

I am on several different medications and every month I would throw the bottles away, because I did not know of any use for them, other than beading. The other night, I thought maybe they can be used in the bottom of plant jars, along with rocks. I haven't tried it yet, but I wanted to share the idea before I forgot about it. Take care all.

Use Car Keys for Remembering

So you don't "forget" that important item from work that you want to take home, put your car keys in it, or on it. You won't forget the item. I have used this many times from books loaned to me to a gallon of milk.

Changing Washing Machine Hoses to Avoid Floods at Home

I clean clothes dryer vent systems and do a little bit of insulation work. One thing that most people don't even give a second thought is the black rubber hoses on the back of their clothes washer. I can safely say that maybe one out of twenty five homes have the stainless steel mesh hoses. They cost around $25.00 for the pair at most home centers or hardware stores. It's like changing a garden hose, it's that simple. There are nightmarish stories about folks coming home to find their homes filled with water, about 500 gallons a minute.

Use Nail Brushes for Cleaning Small Spaces

I rarely use a nail brush to clean under my nails, as I use the end of a nail file, so I have a small collection of nail brushes I've saved from gift sets (frugal people save anything they think they will eventually find a use for). I keep a couple of them by the sink in the laundry room and have found they are great for scrubbing small spaces - a little larger than an old toothbrush and smaller than a traditional scrub brush. They have come in handy time and time again.

Advice from Surviving Hurricane Ike

Editor's Note: This post was submitted 9/15/2008. We hope that Diana's situation has improved significantly since submitting this.

Hurricane Ike has devastated Texas, Kentucky National Guard have been deployed to assist and the Louisville, Kentucky area was hit by Hurricane force winds Sunday afternoon leaving a trail of downed trees, wrecked homes, power outages and devastation.

Our entire city is currently without power, no gas stations are open and trees are across all roads leading from my house. I don't have electricity, telephone service or reliable cell phone service at my home. But we are safe and relatively happy.

Here are a few tips to get you through any emergency:

  • Be prepared: This takes some advance planning. Stock up on the following:>

    • At least 1-5 liter container of drinking water
    • Emergency radio which operates on a crank battery
    • flashlights with WORKING batteries (we also have several of those press on dome lights)
    • a manual can opener and canned goods that can be eaten without warming
  • Always refill your cars gas tank when it gets between 1/2 to 1/4 full.
  • Keep your cell phone recharged.
  • KNOW where your emergency supplies are kept (we keep all our flashlights in one closet).
  • NEVER approach downed power lines. Call your provider and report downed lines as soon as you are safely able to do so.
  • Downed tree limbs can be deadly. Limbs can fall unexpectedly, chain saws are dangerous. IF you are inexperienced proceed with extreme caution! Paying to have limbs removed is cheaper than the hospital bill that results from you trying to do it yourself.
  • NEVER use a gas or charcoal grill inside your home.
  • Report any damages to your homeowners insurance. Take photos of damage. Remember that losing the contents of that basement freezer can result in a paid claim.
  • Consider purchasing a gas generator if you live in areas prone to power outages. This can preserve your refrigerator contents and allow you to make a pot of coffee or use the microwave. If you have a gas generator be sure to know how to use it properly and keep gas, in an approved container, handy. Don't use the generator indoors.
  • RELAX, Take a nap or use this time to play games with your kids, take a walk (if it is safe to do so), pickup small sticks and limbs for a bonfire later in the season (make a game out of cleaning up your yard), reconnect with your neighbors, lend a hand to a less fortunate neighbor or an elderly person in your neighborhood. Share your chainsaw or power tool skills and lastly count your blessings.

Use Small Children's Clothes Hangers for Pants

When my son was younger I loved the small kid-sized hangers to hang up his clothes. When he grew out of the small hangers and into the larger hangers, I didn't know what to do with them. I gave away a bunch of them before I realized they were perfect to hang my pants on, right next to my shirts in my closet!

Now they are used for many more items than just my pants, I use them for everybody's pants. No more wrinkles! They are also perfect for small items like ties and other items that don't hang on larger hangers well because they slip to one side or the other.

Product Review: Vicks Vaporub

Vicks Vaporub works great on sore muscles and dry skin. I used it for back pain. Also great on dry skin on feet, at night rub in and sleep with white cotton socks. Amazing how soft dry spots become. Be sure not to use on open sores.

Memory Gifts For Christmas

Every year the adults in my family draw names and buy a gift for just one person instead of a gift for everyone. Sometimes we have themes for the gifts. One year we did memory gifts (I saw this one on TV) The give was supposed to represent a particularly memory of that person in the past. It was very moving to see what memories people cherish. We will have a different theme this year, don't know what yet.

Condition Your Grill With Oil To Prevent Sticking

Tired of food sticking to your BBQ grill? Try this. Heat your grill on high and let it get hot. Use a 2 inch brush and small dipping bowl with about 1/4 inch veg oil. Dab brush in veg oil, get excess off by using the edge of the bowl and wipe along the grate as if painting. It may get hot getting the back edge. Now you're ready to grill. Do not clean after cooking. The next time you grill, heat up the grate and use a wire grill brush after it is hot. The old stuff will come off easy and redo the brush and oil thing before grilling. The more you do this the more your grill will be conditioned. BTW, I never clean the wire brush. The oil starts to gather on it, helping with the conditioning of the grill.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Two mothers were talking about their sons. The first said, "My son is such a saint. He works hard, doesn't smoke, and he hasn't so much as looked at a woman in over two years."

The other woman said, "Well, my son is a saint himself. Not only hasn't he not looked at a woman in over three years, but he hasn't touched a drop of liquor in all that time."

"My word," the first mother said. "You must be so proud."

"I am," the second mother replied. "And when he's paroled next month, I'm going to throw him a big party."

Getting a Young Dogs Attention

My little girl gets so distracted when we are out walking in public. So distracted that she seems to want to wander back and forth on the trails or walk ways. She wants to go sniff things and pulls in order to try and get her own way.

I don't want to pull her on her harness and tell her come on this way. Eventually she comes but sometimes I have to pick her up and point her in the direction we were originally going. She just seems stubborn sometimes and really need to know how to get over this.

When we are alone on a desolate logging road, she is perfect. She comes when I call her and even heals. She will heal in public if I keep her on a short leash. Overall, she is good but just sometimes she gets really stubborn. Shitz Shu, Yorkie, Maltese, 16 months old and in heat. Not yet spayed but as soon as her heat is finished. Hopefully this will keep her less distracted.

Any suggestions appreciated. How do I train my dog to get and keep her attention?

Killing Grass Around Spruce Tree

I have an 8 year old Colorado blue spruce with 2' tall quack grass growing up through the bottom branches. If I pull the grass out it comes back thicker. Dog Getting Her First Period (Heat)

My little girl Roxy, ShitzShu, Maltese and Yorkie, 16mnths old, started her period on Sept 5th and is still spotting. Otherwise she is happy, eating, playing and sleeping normally. She does rub her bottom on the ground, which has indicated need to go number 2.
Probably to release her glands.

Her vulva is still swollen as well and am almost positive that this is her heat cycle but wondering when her spotting is going to stop.. Any info appreciated.

PS: She seen vet on Sept 4 and confirmed no infection regarding the swollen vulva. Roxy has made two location moves since August 18th which may of upset her a bit so thinking perhaps the instability (we were house sitting but home now since Monday) may of prolonged her period. Also, I walk her on a leash in dog parks and wonder if the other dog scents can prolong a heat cycle? Can anyone tell me what the longest is that their female dogs have had their period for?

I have read that usual period is one week for a dog but also read it can carry on for up to three weeks. Please comment.

Hose For Washing Dog In Bathtub

I first want to thank everyone for responding and helping me find a low fat diet for my dog Gracie. I have a new request. Does anyone know where I can find a portable hose to use in my bathtub to give my dogs a bath? I prefer to use the bathtub in my master where it is separate from my shower.

I can't find a hose that would quickly connect to the nozzle. Does anyone have a suggestion of where I can get one or am I asking for something that doesn't exist? I tried to see if I could have a nozzle installed that connects to the faucet but they have to be installed the same time as the bathtub and would be too expensive to replace. Thanks.

Decorating Attic Bedrooms

My granddaughters both have attic rooms. Both about 12 x 18 in size. They both have a window at one end and the entry door at the other end (both are on the 12 foot end). They are sort of long thin rooms with light coming from the only window on the end. I wanted to keep the white ceilings, we need that to keep the rooms brighter. But I am willing to paint designs on them or whatever.

I want to do something really cute and creative with decorating them. Especially with painting them. I was considering a stripe of a contrasting color around one room but am not good with ideas. Does anyone know a web site I can go to to look at this type thing? Or does anyone have any good ideas about how to decorate them? Thanks.

Write an Ethical Will
By Claire Bush

An ethical will, sometimes called an ethical legacy, is a document written to preserve and pass along key moral and life lessons. An ethical will is not a legally binding document and is not intended as a way to distribute property or money. However, these documents are becoming increasingly popular as baby boomers reach retirement age and beyond. Following is a rundown on how to prepare an ethical will.
