Craft: Easy Pleated Tote Bag

I made this tote bag using this tutorial:

They are easy to make and loads of fun creating your own design. I modified the original one by making straps wider and adding them to the top of the bag at the pleats instead of at the band. Then I folded them up to the top of the bag and sewed across, then topstitched all around creating 4 loops.

Also I added an elastic headband (rubber) 5 inches long (fold in half) to the band after attaching it to the pleated bag top. After which I attached the band facing, folded that into the bag and slipstatched it to inside seam with heavy thread.

The last thing was to add a big pretty button for closure. I lined these bags with a matching solid fabric like satin or other. Light colors work best so you can see what's in the bag, but any color is fine. I press down the pleats first before I sew across the top to hold them in place. Thanks for looking and happy sewing!

  • Double-sided adhesive
  • Glue stick

Scenery: Relaxing Lake

I find this is a very relaxing picture. I remember after taking this, my husband had wandered off, so I sat down to wait for him. There was a warm breeze, the sound of the water gently lapping at the edge of the lake, and the sounds of the birds singing just before night time. Very relaxing.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Check With Your Utilities for Cheaper Rate Times

Some utility companies, such as water and electric offer 2 or more rate times through out the day. Check and see if yours does, and then act accordingly. Try and run your appliances, during the times when the rate is the cheapest. I schedule my laundry during the off peak (which for my companies is 9pm to 6 am) To do this, you may need to change your habits and schedule some.

I now start the dishwasher to run while we are sleeping. I no longer do all my laundry on one day of the week, but instead do one load a day, at night. I set it to wash over night, then hang them out first thing in the morning. However if I need to put them in the dryer, I finish washing it before bed and then run the dryer while we are sleeping.

Also, some companies offer a farm or ag rate. If they do, it may be cheaper for you to have a second meter set for your barn. For us, it is a large savings. Be sure to use this meter for all your farm uses. Our neighbors even have their deep freeze in the barn to save on their house electric. It stores their produce and meat that their farm produces.

Cleaning Orange Glo Residue From Floors

We were also victims of the Orange Glo Hardwood floor fiasco! Our cleaning service used it on our foyer when our usual solution ran out. The waxy/oily/sticky smudge grew through the whole first floor. To give you an idea, 2200+ prefinished Bellawood Brazilian Cherry all covered with this stuff tracked by footsteps and attempts to remove it.

I tried the water/ammonia/water solution 3 equal parts and did not work so well. The Zep Hardwood and Laminate Floor Cleaner did the job! It took new pads on the mops (Dickies), and 2 rounds of scrubbing. The floors still have minimal residue which I'm sure will be removed over the next few cleanings.

Other safe products for your wood floors are:

1. Zep for laminate and hardwood
2. Bruce hardwood and laminate floor cleaner

Both of these are $5 to $9 at Lowes and Home depot. Good luck, don't forget to get new mops before starting.

Reuse Junk Mail Addresses

Before I throw out the junk mail that comes through the post (in the recycling bin of course) I cut out my address. I save them to use as returns labels when I send out parcels (for eBay etc). Now I don't dread the junk mail coming any more!

Recycle Pantyhose and Avoid Panty Lines

Do you hate panty lines as much as I do? I have tried the "thong" approach, and let's just say, they are not for me. I created an answer that also recycles too. When I get a run in my pantyhose, I don't through them away; I cut off about five inches off the bottom of the legs. I hold the pantyhose together so that they will be even after they have been cut.

When I want to wear a pair of slacks, I reach for my footless pantyhose. The benefits are that I get that extra, much needed tummy support, (After birthing four kids, who wouldn't!) I can wear sandals, and most important to me, I don't have the panty lines. The pantyhose can also be used the same with walking shorts too. I just cut off more of the pantyhose legs and they give me the same support and no panty lines.

I hope you try it and enjoy the same benefits I have without buying those expensive undergarments which still tend to leave panty lines in one place or another.

Keep Your Keys By Your Cell Phone

It's a good idea to charge your phone at night while you sleep so it's ready to start your day with you in the morning. However, I would charge mine during the night and then forget to take it with me in the morning. Now I put my purse and/or keys on the counter behind the phone, so I have to move the phone to get to my things. No more forgetting the phone!

Product Review: Dawn Simple Pleasures Dishwashing Liquid

I found a new product called Dawn Simple Pleasures dishwashing liquid with air freshener beads attached to the bottom. My kitchen smells great! And when the detergent is gone, I drop the air freshener beads on the floor and vacuum them up. Every time I vacuum now, the whole house smells fresh and clean.

Avoid Watering Down Your Summer Drinks

This tip is in regards to any summer time drink you're enjoying. Adding plain ice cubes to your drink will only water it down. If you're having iced tea like I do all the time, make your ice cubes from iced tea. When you toss a few cubes into your tea it won't get weak. The same goes for kool aid or lemonade. I always make a few ice cube trays of whatever beverage in is the fridge at the time. No more watered down drink, it's just as good from start to finish.

Easy Potatoes for Camping or Cookouts

These are my favorite potatoes for the summer! My mom used to make them when we were little! I have found that when going camping or if I am going to be busy and will not have time later. Earlier in the day, I peel potatoes and cut in quarters, cook them some until they are just cooked a little way through. You can make as many potatoes as you want.

If you have a lot to make, I would advise doing a couple packets, same for foil, as it is easier to work with and you will not have to worry about foil or packets coming apart. Which is no fun as you can imagine and (if you are like me) you know that is exactly what would happen. Yep,right over the fire, or into the grill!

When cool, I cut them even smaller and put them in foil packets (large size or just use foil). Put butter and choice of any spices besides salt. Wrap in foil and keep cold.

Then when you get to the grill or the campgrounds and you're busy setting up, all you have to do is put your potatoes on the grill or on a rack, if camping, but not directly on the fire. Add your meat and there are the main courses for dinner. Now I like mine cooked until they are really golden brown and hard on the bottom. Not all potatoes will be like this but I think they are out of this world when really well done!

As for how long to cook, it depends on how hot your fire or charcoal will be. Keep a check on them so they do not burn off the butter it can be added if needed. It should not take more then 15-20 minutes but like I said it depends on the heat

They are just great this way. Good luck I hope you try them and really hope you like them. It is just one more way to make dinner easy. Now all you need is your salad and you're good to go.
Oh yes, if you have kids, do not forget desert!

Good Luck camping or cooking!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Early one morning, my husband, who works in a funeral home, woke me, complaining of severe abdominal pains. We rushed to the emergency room, where they gave him a series of tests to determine the source of the pain.

My husband decided not to have me call in sick for him until we knew what was wrong. When the results came back, the nurse informed us that, true to our suspicions, he was suffering from a kidney stone.

I turned to my husband and asked, "Would you like me to call the funeral home now?"

With an alarmed look, the nurse quickly said, "Ma'am, he's not THAT sick!"
