My dog just got sprayed by a skunk. My house smells horrible. I see post about cider vinegar. Is it a certain type like apple cider, etc.? Also how much? Any help would be great

My dog is black so can I leave out the peroxide? I don't want to bleach her fur!

My dog got sprayed by a skunk and tomato juice didn't work. Get dawn dish soap with degreaser and hydrogen peroxide mix together and wash dog. Beware the hydrogen peroxide might bleach black dogs!

Our dog got sprayed by a skunk around midnight or so and we had to no choice but to bring her in the house because it is winter time in New England. we didn't have tomato juice but we did have a big jar of tomato sauce, that didn't work. We called a local emergency vet and they gave the mixture of the hydro, dawn and baking soda and it worked. Our house doesn't smell because we opened all the windows, lit a ton of candles and had all the fans going. We kept her only in the bathroom until she was clean so she couldn't get the smell anywhere else. So if you do have to bring your dog inside, just make sure you have a lot of candles around.

This is my second time, Round one: we used a lot of tomato juice, worked... kinda. This time around we are going to try "The Solution". I'll let you know how it works. This sucks, I just wanted to go to bed.

My dog got sprayed by a skunk last night. Can it be harmful to her, if she is pregnant? Does anybody know. Please let me know, if you do. Thank you kindly.

After the negative feeback on here regarding using tomato juice to get rid of skunk smell on a dog, I was a bit dissapointed because thats all I had available when my dog got sprayed last night (my friend gave us a big 12 can box that has been sitting around for months). Me and my daughter took her out to to barn and dumped 4 full cans over her back, neck, face, paws and around her ears. We let it sit for 20 minutes and sprayed her down. We got up this moring and the skunk smell (which when they first get sprayed doesnt even smell like skunk, it smells like a fire with a bunch of hazard chemicals burning it it, enough to burn our eyes and throats)was gone! So, I'm not saying that sometimes it wont work, I'm sure all the rest of these people aren't lying, I'm saying you should at least try it. I did and I'm totally happy with the results!

I have allergies, so in the listed formula instead of drugstore hydrogen peroxide I use food or technical grade, and the "No Rinse Body Bath" product instead of dish soap. That way all I have to do is a quick spritz down of every thing. 5 minutes later all is fresh. Will bleach out dark hair/fur, so good on white or light dogs best.

We had this happen to our golden retreiver puppy and we tried the hydrogen peroxide mix. It worked fairly well, but she still smelled to high heaven. That is just so strong a smell. So later in the day we did the tomato juice bath. Couldn't get the tomato juice washed out, so we did a regular bath. Now this is a 4 month old pup! Then we left her outside for 24 hours to air out.

This "recipe" came from www.recipegoldmine.com and was submitted by a pharmaceutical company.

1 bottle hydrogen peroxide
1/2 bottle water
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp. Dog shampoo

Mix hydrogen peroxide with water. Add baking and dog shampoo. Mix and pour into a squirt bottle. Spray entire bottle onto your dog, being careful not to get it directly into his eyes and nose. Work it into his fur. Let it sit for five to ten minutes. Rinse, and your dog will have no odor. When he sits on your lap, you won't be able to smell anything.

The hydrogen peroxide and baking soda and dish soap works great for the dog but the house still smells. I know from personal experience. Sorry don't know how to help with that. My kids lockers at school even smelled.

I always heard that tomato juice works great.

When this happened on a camping trip, we used tomato juice....lots of cans of it for a Boxer dog but it worked. Just pour on the juice let it sit for a moment and then wash with regular shampoo for your dog.

I found this remedy on 5 different websites.

Skunk Smell Remover
1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide*
1/4 cup Baking Soda
2 tbsp Dish Detergent. The stuff for washing dishes in the sink, not something for dishwashers.
* can use white vinegar but it's not as effective

Mix the ingredients in a large bowl, because it will boil up like Vesuvius. We are, after all, making an oxygen generator. Wash the dog with this while it is still foaming, because it is the oxygen which reacts with the thiols in the skunk stink to neutralize the odor. If it sits around, it will loose it's efficacy because the oxygen boils off. Don't try to store it in an airtight container, because it will blow up. The brew also works for clothes, humans and unlucky cats

I've heard that if you use something like one part distilled white vinegar to two or three parts water and you bathe the dog in it, it will completely get rid of the scent--the only thing that will work. Even those so-called "skunk scent remover solutions" don't work, according to an article in a hunting magazine. Try the distilled vinegar first. I think that's what it said to use.
