Ingredients
- 10-12 Potatoes
- 1/2 cup or 1 stick butter/margarine
- 1 medium onion
- 1/2 cup flour
- salt and pepper to taste
- 2 1/2-3 cups milk
- 12 slices American cheese
- 2-3 slices of bread
Directions
Peel and slice potatoes and put in 11x13 baking pan. I make sure the pan is full within 1/4 inch from top. In a medium skillet, melt butter and add 1 medium chopped onion. Saute onion until transparent. Add flour, salt, and pepper and stir until combined. Add milk a little at a time to try not to clump stirring to make smooth, adding more milk if necessary. Add 8 slices of cheese, breaking into pieces first. Stir until cheese is nearly melted. Turn off heat. Let sit a few minutes. If too thick, add milk but you want it to be fairly thick. Pour over potatoes, cover with foil and bake 350 degrees F for 1 hr 15 minutes. While baking, prepare topping by taking the remaining 4 slices of cheese and shred them. Them shred the slices of bread (this will practically clean the slicer). I use the bread ends to not waste any bread. Mix. After the potatoes have baked 1 hr and 15 minutes, remove foil and add topping and bake until melted, about 15 minutes.
My family likes this really well. I have substituted the bread crumbs you can purchase in the canister, but this recipe makes sure you use up any leftover bread ends.
