This is the bomb. I did it in 10 mins. I didnt even have to plunge more than 5 times. I used a non name brand of detergent. I just squirted some dish detergent about 1/2 cup in toilet while I boiled water 2 mins and read these TRUE testimonies then I poured the water in toilet, let sit for 5 mins while reading more TRUE testimonies on how it works then I went back and plunged, noticed the water was going down so I flushed and UH its a beautiful thing especially for my wallet.

Just like the rest of you guys it worked for me too (and I didn't even own a plunger) the toilet was clogged and water raised nearly to the top. So I squirted in some dishwashing liquid, waited, then came back and poured in some boiling hot water. Nothing much was happening but with a coat hanger I pushed and prodded the clogged paper and down it all went! Thank you so much. Saved me so much time and money!

I am the BIGGEST skeptic when it comes to this kind of stuff. NOTHING worked that I tried. I was ready to either cry or pull my hair out. However, THIS WORKED! I put 5 big squirts of liquid dish detergent, let it sit as instructed, then poured stoved, boiling water in the toilet, I let it sit a minute or so, started plunging and it FINALLY gave way. Thank you because I didnt want to tell my husband when he woke up in the morning that I pulled a BIG TIME rookie move by clogging the toilet and now we would have to shell out bucks for a plummer. You saved my backside. GOD BLESS YOU! :)

Adding boiling water & dish washing soap really works! I had the WORST clog imaginable and I tried everything and nothing worked until I used this method. At first it didn't work as quickly as others have claimed. But I repeated the steps multiple times with plunging and by the fourth time, it worked! yay! I was so close to calling a plumber, but I'm glad I didn't! :)

I just moved into my residence at university, and bam I clog the toilet in my shared dorm suite. None of my roommates are home and I was totally helpless. I tried plunging alone but no luck. Then I came across this, a couple dumps of hot water and plunging. Dish soap was the answer. thanks you saved me from a super embarrassing phone call.

Um, where do i find the actual, proper instructions? do u put soap in first then water? or both together?
Help?!
Editor's Note Put a couple of squirts of dish washing liquid (for hand dishwashing) into the toilet. Plunge a little then let it sit for a couple of minutes and follow with a pot of hot or boiling water. You may need to plunge again but many people find that this works quite well. If there is a toy or something hard stuck in the toilet, this will not work and you would do better trying to fish it out with a coat hanger. This seems to work for most natural clogs.

Unbelievable. My 6 year old used paper towels instead of TP and totally clogged the line. After more than a day of liquid plummer and plunging, found this dish detergent suggestion. 1 cup of detergent and 2 qts of hot tap water. I hadn't even completely poured in the water when the clog gave. Thank you for the terrific advice!

Oh My God, I am so glad I found this site. I plunged and plunged. My daughter put paper towels down the toilet and it did get clogged (boy did it get clogged). I used Liquid Drainer and plunged, did not work. Poured some Dawn down the drain. Plunged a couple times and man talk about a happy dance. I am a single mother so that saved me the time of almost calling a plumber.

Today is 8-8-08 and my daughters decided to put 2 rolls worth of quilted northern tp in the potty and flush....major clog. I plunged 3x thought it was gone boy was I wrong. Their dad used it number 2 and wham clogged even worse. So I got on line found this site and I had heard of the dish liquid thing before and thought no way will that ever work. So to top it all off 2 rolls of tp and a "mans" clog I tried it and after about a 1/4 cup of generic dish soap and 8 pots of boiling water..nothing.
I plunged til my arms ached, then I gave up letting it sit for 20 mins. I went back in to the bathroom and low and be hold some of the water had gone down. I plunged about 4 more times and wah-la!the clog was gone. Thank god because i wasn't trying to call the maintenance guy to fix it and charge me $150 to do the same thing.

I'm glad I don't have plumbing problems at home, but I am a housekeeper and had a clogged toilet at work. But it was only toilet paper that wouldn't flush. it wasn't Charmin, but was high quality stuff (saying that after reading about Charmin being heavy and causing clogs). Anyway, I actually use a cleaning cart. Since I work for a company so I had Ivory dishwashing liquid in it. I was almost glad to have a clogged toilet so I could try this! lol ONE big squirt and flushed and the heavy TP flushed! I was like WOW. No wonder the TFC peopel brag on this! lol

I tried for 20 minutes to unclog a toilet with plunging without success. I got on the net and found this post. As my wife was calling a plumber, I poured the dishwahing soap in the toilet and boiled water (when in Rome.....). Before she could make the appt. with the plumber, I had ol faithful flushing like new.

Amazing! I'm a natural skeptic but being so desperate and realizing a lot of cleaning products couldn't be used on my toilet, I gave it a shot. I squirted in some dishwasher soap, threw in a pot of boiling water, flushed. No solution. I plunged a few times, squirted some soap, plunged, flushed and it was done. Really soapy but it cleaned itself out. Definitely recommended.

After reading the posts here, I poured in a cup of dishwashing liquid in my clogged toilet, which by then had emptied of water, and then followed it up with a pot of boiling water. I plunged and plunged, hot soapy water splashing all over the bathroom floor and on me. After about 2 minutes of plunging, I flushed, and the water came back up. I thought I had wasted my time. Then I read a post here about using a wire hanger to try to free up whatever was clogging the drain. I tried that, and resumed with the plunging. In just a few seconds, the water went down. I flushed, and it was okey. I'm so happy! I was about to call for a plumber. The dish soap, hot water trick really works. And if the clog persists, a wirehanger might just be the thing for you.
Editor's Note: A cup of dishwashing liquid is really a lot, just a couple of squirts is enough.

I can't believe that the dish soap and boiling water worked. I only had a little dish soap left so didn't think it would work but as soon as I poured in the hot water and pumped the plunger a couple times the clog cleared. I just couldn't believe it. My roomate was just as amazed as I was. I'm just so glad it did work, didn't want to have to spend money on a plumber!

Genius! Stupidly, I dropped some doggy pooh filled paper towels in the toilet and I've been battling a guest bathroom clog for 2 weeks now. I even went out and bought an auger. Nothing works. I was hesitant to pour hot water into my toilet in fear that it would crack. I poured some Dawn Dishwashing Liquid in the toilet bowl and waited less than 5 minutes. Then, I plunged like 3 times and poof, it was gone. Yeah!

Everyone,
I take back my comments from earlier, which you won't read because the moderator did not feel it appropriate for this site. After quite some time (actually an hour in reality) this did actually work after many, many hours of trying other hairbrained schemes/ideas. My last post was much less optimistic as I had heard so many positive results but curiously never saw any unsuccessful posts, which I thought was unbelievable, even more so when I tried it myself without luck for quite some time. Anyway, I'm feeling bright and sun shiny like everyone else now as I have my toilet back to use! I hate to admit when someone else has a better idea than mine, but I will admit that I've been had by Dawn dish soap! Use it if you have a grown mans clog. IT WILL WORK!

Alright guys, it's time for a reality check and to grow up! I've tried your little trick for about the 500th time and although my toilet now is clean as ever with about 50 gallons of fresh new dawn detergent, it is still as clogged as ever. For all of those of you who have their toilets cleared, I've actually got a grown mans clog that isn't coming free with some dish soap! Thanks, but I've found the information to be worthless and just another hours worth of wasted time in finding a REAL solution! GROW UP!

THIS REALLY WORKS! Today is June 26, 2008 and I clogged the toilet. I was using the plunger and the water just kept coming up. I was plunging for like an hour >.<. Anyway, I turned to the Internet and I
1) Boiled water in a hot pot. 2) Let 1/2 cup of dish soap sit on the toilet 3) Plunged 4) Poured more hot water 5) Let it sit for like a minute 6) Plunged again 7) Thought it wasn't working so I left for like another minute 8) When I came back it seemed unclogged so I plunged some more and flushed and SCOREEEEE! UNCLOGGED. I don't know how long it takes for other people to unclog it but it works.

Thank you again for the internet community for giving advice on such a topic matter. I am currently visiting my girlfriend's house in the Bay area and found myself clogging their toilet by stupidly flushing 2 pieces of toilet paper down the drain. I ended up buying 2 plungers, the 2nd one being more high tech than the first, but none of them seemed to fix the problem. My girlfriend's dad ended up using the toilet and found out about the clogging and called me out. Pretty embarrassing. He was planning on calling the plumber the next day, but I desperately searched online for a solution and glad I came across this thread. The trick worked perfectly and no more clog / embarrassment.

Stupidly flushed 7-8 paper towels in our downstairs bathroom. Didn't realize it had clogged - next day while taking a shower in same bathroom, water wasn't draining and flushing toilet again made things worse.
Liquid Plumbr in the shower drain, waited 4 hours - nothing. 1/2 cup soap in toilet, 1 gallon hot water, plunger immediately. After about 10 plunges, water flushed down toilet, and standing water in shower started draining.
GREAT ADVICE, DISH SOAP ROCKS!

My mom and I just tried this literally about 15 minutes ago and it worked. I have to say, we were skeptical at first, but it worked. What we did was pour the dish soap in the toilet bowl and then slowly poured the boiling water in. We let it sit about 4 minutes and then plunged about three or four times and the water went down the drain. Then we flushed it and it was fine! It worked really really well.

Boil some water (about 2qts) 1/2 cup dishwashing liquid
Pour 1/2 the boiled water into bowl. Pour 1/2 cup dish liquid on top. Pour rest of water over that Plunge, plunge, plunge If clog not cleared, add more water (hot is ok if not boiled) Keep plunging and adding hot water. Cleared! If it doesnt clear, at least the stench is covered by the soap (bonus to this trick!) Keep plunging and adding hot water- took me about 10 min overall.
Editor's Note: It does seem to help if you wait a few minutes after putting in the dish soap and give it some time to work.

He said *yah well I'll run to my moms and get a snake, I know that will work!* I said well at the price of gas I would try this first. I think he didn't want to admit a senior citizen would know the solution. After I got home my daughter called all happy and said *Mom it worked! lol She was so glad.. plus it saved a 20 mile car ride and the gas! Yay me. I mean TFC! lol

My toilet was clogged for 3 days. Everyday we worked on getting it unclogged. It was so bad that we left the house every time we had to use the bathroom. With every plunge, it seemed as though I could plunge everything up, but not make it go back down. (GROSS) I forgot I was going to look for a solution online 2 days ago, and right when I got online to find a plumber, I remembered to look this up. I boiled a tea kettle of water and threw some dish detergent in the bowl while I was waiting. When the water was boiled, i put in half the kettle, plunged until it broke loose and started draining slowly, then threw in the other half and plunged again and it all went down so easy. I boiled another pot just in case I would need it, but by the time the other kettle was hot, the toilet was working beautifully. Thank you soooo much.

It Freaking Works! Got to say I was about to post a negative comment after trying it once, but went back and poured some more hot water and plunged a few more times and it sucked the water and everything right in! Darn awesome.
Here is exactly what I did:
Boiled about a gallon of water with dish detergent, I added about 1/2 cup of it, poured the hot water into the toilet directly, plunged a few times, added some more hot water, plunged about 4 more times and Barabim Baraboom no more clogged toilet. Thanks!

This is great! The super hadn't come, we were looking at a day's plans ruined since we'd have to wait around for him, and searched the net for a solution. Everyone raved about this method (at other sites as well) so we tried it. It took about 15 minutes, and the bowl nearly overflowed with suds (my fault, I used too much dish liquid), but it eventually worked. Had some minor clogging the next day, but another squirt of dish liquid did the trick quickly. Stick with 2 squirts, and don't give up if it takes a while.

I'm always the skeptic, but when you can't get rid of a clog, you'll try anything. The dish soap and a kettle of boiling water followed by a few plunges actually worked! Thanks!

Worked great. My toilet had been clogged for 2 days and when we flushed any other toilet in the house it would come up through the clogged toilet. I tried plunging and also tried the snake but nothing. I saw this post and decided "WHY NOT?". I put about 3 squirts of dawn and 2 pots of hot water and presto.....the clog is gone. Awesome tip.

Should I wait until the bowl is drained all the way before I use the soap and hot water? Because I just tried flushing it again, and it filled up.

I thought everyone was crazy when I read the reviews on the dish soap and hot water and my toilet was driving me crazy! My cousin and his wife used to live where we live now and she used to flush baby wipes down the toilet and always wondered why they had problems.
Well when we moved in and they moved downstairs we inherited their plumbing problem. We were getting sick of having to plunge the toilet after every bathroom use and the plunger was usually no help anyways. Well today was one of those days so I did a search to see what I could do. I tried the dish soap thing and it was amazing. I know to never waste my money again. Thank You!

Can't believe it worked. I let the detergent sit overnight, and poured the boiling water in this morning. It unclogged after about a minute or so. Amazing, thank you very much for the handy solution.

Car's in the shop so we're stranded at the house and plunging didn't work...neither did the wire hanger. Two days with the clog and we were getting desperate when I looked online for a solution. Being someone who looks everything up online, I don't know why I didn't look it up sooner! We were about ready to walk to the store to get Drano. Glad we didn't have to do that. Thanks a lot!

Fantastic! After a vile day spent plunging and flushing to no avail, found this site and tried washing up liquid plus a kettle of boiling water. Didn't quite work the first time, though the pan did empty itself, very slowly. Tried again 15 mins later, then plunged a few times and it went. Thank goodness. Feel thoroughly sick now though!

This is amazing. We flushed a toliet cleaning head down the toilet only to find it is was a disposable cleaning head and not a flushable one. We tried everything; multiple plunges, chemicals, even went and bought a plumbing snake. To our disappointment none of these worked. I was ready to quit and thought I would try looking online. Should have done that first and saved myself about $35. Tried this, and it worked the first time. About 4 squirts of dish soap, one pot of boiling water, and 10-15 plunges our toilet is back in action. Thanks for the tip.

Did it about 10 seconds ago, it had been clogged for a day from paper towels. I had blisters on my hands from plunging, so thankful I found this idea. I was very skeptical, but the minute I put the semi-warm water in, it worked instantly, no additional plunging needed! Thank you.

I was skeptical when reading this article about pouring hot water and soap for a stubborn clog. However I was turned into a believer, tried to unclog a toil for about half hour even used an auger and voila, tried the hot water and soap and it worked like a charm. Thanks a bunch!

I LOVE the internet! Was going nuts with a clog that was effecting both of my toilets! Came here and saw all of the rave reviews about dish soap and hot water, so OF COURSE I tried it! A about 5 good squirts of soap, slowly poured in a pot of boiling water, plunged about 10 times and then flushed. GONE! Unbelievable, truly amazing. Thank you, thank you, thank you whoever divulged this miraculous secret!

Like an idiot, I called the plumber first, then looked on the internet. The race was on and luckily, the plumber was behind schedule. After plunging both toilets and watching my bathtub backup for an hour, I tried the soap and hot water. First attempt worked within seconds. The second toilet came clean after a few plunges. It really worked!

Another happy customer. It took a few tries, and draining the cold (dirty) water from the bowl so the hot water could do its thing, but it worked. The soap alone wasn't enough for this one, and it took a while for the clog to break loose once the hot water and soap was applied.
Oh, an important FYI: if your dog ever throws up his dinner right after he eats because he drank too much water too fast, DO NOT flush the regurgitated food down the toilet.

Try using a long pluming snake. If your toilet continues to clog it could be a problum with the pluming or things could be getting thrown down that should not be. "stop putting paper towels down the toilet", says my father

Yep - worked great, just like everyone else said. Put dish soap, waited, then hot water (slowly)...waited....then plunged. Nothing. Drain must have been slowly running however, because almost no water left in bowl. I flush again & the bowl starts filling too full again, so I feverishly start plunging & 'oila!'It drains completely and unclogs! This is after 45 minutes of plunging it with no effect! Thank you so much!

Thanks a bunch for that privy information about the dish soap! I had tried everything including an auger, but none worked. Then I tried the dish soap/hot water and in 20 minutes our one and only toilet was unclogged PHEWWW! I was so worried that my six year old little boy would have to go and with no working toilet.

I tried the hot water (boiling) and 3 squirts of dish soap. I'm not sure if that was what worked it out or not but I put about 16 cups of hot water in and plunged a lot, even emptied the bowl twice. When my husband came home he suggested plunging faster and that is what finally worked. It was certainly better than using additional chemicals!

Yes, I used this method today after I clogged the toilet. This was the fifth time I clogged the toilet, and the plunger did not work this time. Found your tip, followed it (three squirts of dishwashing liquid, wait a few minutes, get a potful of boiling hot water and pour, wait a few minutes and plunge), and it worked like a charm! Thanks! It saved me from having to call apartment maintenance, and the embarrassment of explaining why the toilet was clogged in the first place!

This really works. After much struggle, my 6 year old deposited what must have been a world record sized output and it clogged the toilet. It wouldn't flush, but would drain after a few minutes.
I tried the ball plunger, but it didn't work. Tried a drain cleaner with sulfuric acid and it didn't work.
Then after reading this I put a good squirt of dishwashing liquid in the toilet, waited a few minutes while boiling a few quarts of water, then poured the hot water into the toilet and flushed. It went right down.

call me a skeptic, but I was desperate. At home, toilet clogged and filled to the brim, the only one we have---for a family of 5! husband not due home for 4 or more hours.
Plunged-no luck.
put in soap--nothing happened.
went to store bought snake--no luck.
siphoned out all the water and put in hot water from bathroom sink---plunged twice more and VOILA! A clean functional (albeit a tad sudsy) toilet!
thank you!

Well, I had a clogged toilet, thought the problem was fixed. Used a plunger on it and got the ever satisfying swirl. Several hours go by and the clog settles back in - at my wits end, I searched the web and found this site. Encouraged by the positive feedback by this odd method and frustrated by valuable time wasted with no results, I tried this way and after my second attempt - no success. I think this is a bogus method myself.

So, I'm babysitting and I've been feeling a bit jammed up lately. My stomach is killing me and finally I'm like: "Yay! It's time!"
I go in and, you know. Well, I almost passed out from the effort but finally I'm done. I glance down and I'm like: "Oh. My. Gosh. THAT poo is bigger than Bono right there."
I wondered if it would make it down at all, but I thought, what are you going to do with it now? So flush. Clog. I search for friend's plunger and yeah, they don't have a plunger. I pack up the baby, go to the store, buy a plunger and...yeah, Didn't Even Touch It.
So I'm having a small heart attack worrying about my friends coming home to the aftermath of the world's largest poo. It'll be pretty embarrassing to have to offer to pay for a plumber and, I mean, obviously I did it because they didn't do it and no one else has been there. Pretending it didn't happen is not an option.
I tried the dish soap as an absolute last ditch effort. I almost didn't do it because I thought that explaining a bubbly clogged up toilet would be even worse than explaining a regular one. But thank God I did!
Three big squirts. Let it sit a few minutes. Couple of plunges. Disappointment...left the bathroom. Friend calls and says they're on their way home. I think: "Well, one last try. And, huzzah, one small plunge later and No More Clog!

THANK YOU. I took your advise (3 squirts of dish soap and hot water), and water did not recede right away. After I poured some water, it receded a little. I then used the ball type plunger twice. It worked! From G_zilla
