Patchwork Photo Album
By Shauna Smith Duty

When you open a photo album, all the warmth of a family's history is poured out on each page. All those precious memories tucked inside a generic photo album from a super store seems a little ironic. Sure, they say it's what's inside that counts, but a nice presentation is nothing to scoff at. Here's a fabulous way to make the exterior of your photo albums compliment the personality of your treasured memories inside.

Bathroom with Two Entries?

My tip for everybody that has a bathroom with TWO entry ways. Our new house is like this. You can go through the garage (picture of my garage that I just finished) into the bathroom or from the other side from the TV room. People forget to lock AND unlock BOTH doors when their done. My tip, I put in a light on the outside of both doors that are wired to the bathroom light. Now, if the light is on before you go in, STOP because someone is in there.

Measuring Elastic for Clothing

Elastic around your waist should be your waist size minus 2 inches. It works every time.

Keeping Your Beans Safe From CutWorms

Instead of composting my egg shells I dry them and crunch them up and store in a container all year to sprinkle on my beans after I plant them. The cut-worms and slugs don't seem to like the feeling of the shells on their underside. The egg shells end up in your garden and serve a purpose too.

Decorating Drawer and Cabinet Knobs

Decorate your kitchen by handcrafting your own kitchen cabinet and drawer knobs or pulls. Buy plain white knobs and paint or decorate how you'd like (flower petals, hot chili peppers, gingham, butterflies, cats, green ivy, etc.) The list is endless. Then give them a coat or 2 of clear varnish before attaching to a drawer or cabinet.

Meat Grilling Tips

Tips for grilling meat. Post your ideas.

Barbecue Marinades Safety

When preparing to BBQ or grill (it's called different things in different places) and you have your meats in a marinade. It's ok to pour the marinade from the container or baggie onto your meat as it's being grilled.

Once your meats are ready to take off the grill, do NOT pour any leftover marinade over the meat, before serving, until you've been able to cook the marinade, on the stove.

You'll be saving your self a trip to the hospital. The marinade still has the bacteria of the raw meat in it. Cook it in a sauce pan on the stove to the boiling point. Then you can serve it with your meats.

When canning your own tomato juice, cook the tomatoes before squeezing the juices out. There will be less heartburn for the people drinking it later.

Create a Christmas Newsletter

Use your calendar as a diary. When things come to mind that you are proud of about your family, jot it on the calendar. There's also extra space on the bottom of most calendars to write notes. Then in November, go over your calendar, and create a wonderful newsletter to send to family with everyones' accomplishments in it.

Continuing Your Education

I'm one of those people that dropped out of school then went back to school and college in my 40's. It was great, but I would have rather been educated the old fashion traditional way like Most people.

HOWEVER, self education can fun too. There is nothing in the world you can't learn about at the local library. You can get books and tapes or cd's by mail if you prefer doing it that way. The next time you wonder how make an ice cream cake or build a deck, Go for it. By the way, crafts are in the 700 section.

Starting Christmas Lists

June is almost over. It's time to start Christmas lists. Really. First make a list of all the names on a large sheet of paper. Leave room for notes and check-off marks. Grandparents can use stamps and envelopes and cute return address labels.

If you like to make stuff, start now, even if you don't know who will get it yet.

All the thrift stores have Christmas wrap for pennies, and it's new.
I like to put suggestions by a name if I know what they like to collect. Starting now makes Christmas like the good old days, less stress.

Getting Rid of Bed Bugs

Have you heard about bed bugs on the news lately> If you live in a dry area, it's not so bad. If you live in a humid area, you've got a problem. Put your pillows in the dryer for 15 minutes on High. That's cheaper than buying a new pillow. Bedding can be washed on a regular basis or just thrown in the dryer on high for 15 minutes also. It will kill all the bed bugs. If everyone in the house has the sniffles, it may be an allergy to dust mites, or bed bugs. Even the cleanest house has them.

Tips for Using Sewing Patterns

Tips and ideas for using sewing patterns. Post your ideas.

Sewing Pattern Tip

When you buy a pattern from now on. Don't put too much concern on what size it is. you will have to make adjustments to the pattern to fit you EVERY TIME. The directions in the pattern will show you how to do it. Measure the pattern and yourself, you never know if the pattern is what you thought it would be as far as size.

Everything You Need

Ok now, Just admit it. You don't have everything you want, but you have everything you NEED. Use a grocery list and stick to it. Sell what you don't need, either in an ad, yard sale or over the net. Bartering is fun and a lot of people are anxious to do it. Let people know that you need a dresser, and would be happy to trade for a piece of furniture that you really could do without. There are bulletin boards in some businesses and libraries that accomodate bartering notes. If not, you might suggest it to your local deli.

Doubling a Congealed (Jello) Salad

When preparing a congealed salad recipe (using jello or gelatin), all ingredients can be doubled except: Salt, Vinegar & Lemon Juice. For these use only 1 1/2 times the given amount, but no more, or your salad won't congeal.

Getting Involved in Your Community

There are a lot of clubs that contribute to the community. Kiwanis, Lions, I could go on and on. All of them should be recognized more. If you're not clubby and you want to contribute to your community, write letters to the editor about what your community needs to concentrate on.

The City Managers office always welcomes input from individuals. Anyone is welcome to attend city council meetings to get a good idea on what the town is focusing on. Your two cents is valuble. You don't need to be a lawyer to bring up a traffic problem or how you feel about how the police department is handling problems in your area.

Actually, if you get up in the morning and be the best person you can be, you're making a contribution, but if you have a passion about anything that you could share with the community, you might make a vital difference. Wow, that would look good on a resume.

"Dumbest" Kid in the World Joke

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, "This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you."

The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, "Which do you want, son?"

The boy takes the quarters and leaves.

"What did I tell you?" said the barber. "That kid never learns!" Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store.

"Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?"

The boy licked his cone and replied, "Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!

Something is Eating My Roses

There is something chewing up my climbing roses and my strawberries. There are little holes ALL OVER! The strawberries are a new addition, located close to the roses, but the climbing roses have been there a long time. They climb up the side of my house about 12 to 14 feet and I really need to do something to save them!

I havent seen any bugsm just the holes in the leaves. They bloomed nicely again this year but as the blooms fade now there are holes.

Thank you! I just love this web site!

Cleaning a Solid Valance

We recently have bought a new home. In the living room is a solid valance attached above the front window. It is beautiful -- except for the black dirt along the top of it. I don't know how to take it down, though I do have a few ideas about how to clean it once it is down. The fabric seems to be a heavy, cream, silk type of fabric.

Any tips on how to clean this thing? I am thinking either some type of upholstery cleaner - or even maybe my steam cleaner may help with this.

Thank you,
Dawn in AR

Chirping Birds

Every morning at 4:15 a.m., and all day, the birds wake and begin chirping in the holly tree, the oak tree and several others, none of which belong to me but surround my house. What can I do to drive them away to the forest of trees across the street?

Pots Stuck Together

I moved over the weekend, and my children were very helpful in packing. However, when I unpacked my pots and pans, one of the children (possibly the one named "not me") had nested two of my pots and they have become stuck together.

I tried puttting cold water in the top one and dipping the bottom one in hot water, but they would not budge.

Does anyone else have any ideas? One of these pots belonged to my grandmother and it always makes me think of her when I cook with it.

Thanks,
Kelly in Virginia

Tortilla Chip Salad

I apologize if this has already been requested or posted before. I went to a church on the grounds dinner and there was a salad there that was so delicious. I tried to find out who made it and the name, one person told me that she thought it was called Dorito Salad but was not really sure. It had tortilla chips, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, ranch style beans (I think!) and French dressing. I would love the recipe or any version. Thanks so very much!

Using Frozen Zucchini

I have quite a lot of shredded frozen zucchini. When I use the zucchini after its been frozen and then defrosted for cakes or brownies, do I drain off the liquid? That liquid would have been in the zucchini in its natural state, as if I was using it fresh, but I am unsure if I need to drain it off before using in a recipe after it has been defrosted.

Thanks for any help on this.

Does My Dog Sleep Too Much?

Silly question here but is it normal for dogs to sleep alot? My dog does sleep but I have noticed she sleeps alot more lately. She follows me around the house everywhere I go. If she is sleeping and I get up to leave the room she will follow me where I go then get comfy and fall asleep again. Should I be concerned? Just asking since we will be boarding her this weekend.

Freezing Eggs

Requesting help, please. A neighbor of ours, who sells eggs, has gifted me with 10 dozen eggs. I have given away many of them, but still am left with more than I can comfortably use right now.

How can I freeze them to use in cooking later on? I think I have to separate them and freeze individually, but am looking for a tip on how I will know later on how much of the white and the yoke constitute a regular large egg?

Thanks for any help!

Cleaning Grout

Can anyone tell me what to use to clean grout. I have porcelain tile floors in my kitchen and dining room, and the grouting is dirty and stained. I've tried different cleaners such as Pine Sol, bleach, etc., but nothing seems to really make the grouting look like new again. The grout was "sealed" when installed two years ago, but it didn't seem to protect it against everyday spills and dirt!

Old-Fashioned Apron

I'm looking for an old-fashioned apron. You know, the kind your grandmother (or in my case, great aunt) wore. It went over the head and tied in the back. It was long enough to cover down to your knees. It often had pockets but not always. I think they were made of cotton and were sometimes ruffled at the neck and bottom. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
