Saving Money on Groceries Without Running All Over Town

Do not overlook the value of using stores that match their competitor's ads. This is seldom advertised so you have to ask. Because I live in a rural area it is not always practical nor do I have the time to do extreme couponing. Before a shopping trip I go online and look at the sale fliers for the week from every grocery store in my area.

I pay particular attention to their "loss leaders" (very low priced items offered to get you into the store). I use the shopping list feature to print out the ads for each item I am interested in. I then go to Wal Mart which matches ad prices as do some other chains. They have a wide selection and are likely to have most of the items I am looking for as well as having generally lower prices on many items.

Tonight's shopping included tangerines 8/$1.00 (Publix) Wal Mart price $.48/ea., Oscar Meyer hot dogs $1.00 (Save-a-lot) Wal Mart $2.49, Coke 12pk 3/$10.00 ( CVS drugs) Wal Mart $3.99 pk, V8 Juice buy 1/get 1 ( Winn-Dixie) Wal Mart $2.68 ea., milk $2.99/gal (Walgreens) Wal Mart $3.80 and a lot more. None of these items were on sale at Wal Mart. You get the idea.

I shopped in one store instead driving all over town to 6 stores. I paid $66.85 and my savings on all the items was $35.18. That is over 1/3 off without a single coupon or extra driving. Be sure to print out the shopping list from each store to show the cashier. It makes it a lot faster than her having to look up each individual ad to verify it.
